●Asahi Sanshin Studio

Although Harumi Kondo, the owner of Asahi Sanshin Studio, is originally from Kansai region in mainland Japan, he has called Okinawa home for more than 40 years. And although he still speaks with a distinctive Kansai accent.It all started when he established his own trading company back in 1963 that imported jewelry, wooden handicrafts, snake skins and other items from Thailand that he then sold to Okinawa.As he was supplying snake skins to local sanshin makers to be used to cover the sound box, he began to think that he would like to sell at his own shop. He hired skilled worker who had experience more than 20 years. Never afraid of new challenges, he eventually quit his company and became a full-time sanshin maker.The entrance to his shop is decorated with a pottery ornament depicting a dragon boat. The walls are covered with bamboo items and Asian prints that he has collected from his many visits to South-east Asian countries.
