Default beware of the jellyfish...

Yesterday, after 5pm I went with my kids and dog to the nearest beach, a small beach just alon the road from Tropical beach. There were lots of people in the water, and it was high tide so very deep, the dog hated it but the kids had a great time. However just before we left my older son, must have touched a jellyfish(the long clear one which can be poisonous), habu kurage, he was hurting pretty bad and I had some vinegar in my car to put on it, or it may have been worse, fortunately he just brushed with it so it wasn't too bad.
I saw while leaving the beach someone had pulled it out of the water and was burying it.
Need to be more vigilant this summer! Take care all.

I have never been stung by one, but I have seen a few floating underwater while swimming at some of the more natural beaches around the island. Luckily their long tenticles didn't brush up against me.

As sea turtle populations continue to decline we will probably see an explosion in jellyfish populations. Sea turtles are their natural preditors and wthout them, that is just another check and balance taken out of the equation.

Of course habitat loss for egg laying is one reason for a decline in sea turtle numbers e.g. sea walls, ocean side resort hotels, rising oceans etc...

But don't forget the mile and miles long drift nets of death that they get ensnared in and drowned and thrown overboard as non targeted catch. And there are the long drift lines with baited hooks. All these help to decimate sea turtles for those good fish dinners one may find at any of your Sams Cafe style restaurants.

The problem is deep enough to spread around to more than just those city planners and construction workers who build sea walls.

So, it is true that sea fish on your plate, helps the Jellyfish mate.

Is it fatal? Here we've the box jellyfish, blue bottle and irukandji, all are fatal but they don't stop me from going into the water.
