Default What is your favorite place on Okinawa?

Kinda sad, but it seems like we mainly post our gripes about the island. I tend to fall into this way too often, and it tends to drag me down sometimes. So, on a more positive note, what is your favorite place on Okinawa?

Culturally, I'd say mine are the castle ruins. Each of them are different in their own way, so it's hard to choose a favorite out of all of them. I really enjoyed Chinen Castle (http://www.japanupdate.com/?id=918, apparently the pictures busted...).

Sefa Utaki is pretty cool too.

My favorite place to go let loose is Hinotama Hall down in Shintoshin though. I've been going to HInotama Hall for about 6 years now. Most week though, any Izakaya with the right group of friends is a lot of fun.

So which places on Okinawa do you enjoy the most?

As far as Izakayas go, I love anzuya. I go to the anzuya in ginowan on 330. They have a drink special where it's all you can drink for 2 hours for around 900 yen.

I too am also a fan of all the castle ruins. Katsuren and Nakagusuku are two of my favorites because of the view. Another one I liked was Chatan castle. I found it with my buddy one day and it was just an enjoyable hike though the woods and through the castle. Oh and Kohgoh Sekirinzan up north is a favorite of both my wife and I. I would recommend going there if you've never been. Taa Taki in ogimi is also a nice place to visit. It's kind hard to find if you don't know where to look but it's well worth it. You get a nice hike up the riverbed and then find a beautiful waterfall. Here is the url to the pictures from taa taki if you want to take a look. http://new.photos.yahoo.com/squallyz...60762336292336

Great pictures man! I really enjoyed those!

Kangoh Sekirinzan is awesome. I went up there about 5 years ago and LOVED it. That place doesn't even feel like Okinawa!

I'm going to have to find my way up to Taa Taki when my daughter gets a little older. It looks really nice.

Yeah, Anzuya is really nice too. There used to be one about a kilometer from my old house down in Naha. I used to get pretty tanked up there. Now, I can't remember the name of it, but there's an izakaya down by my house that has all you can drink Awamori for Y500 and it comes out of a faucet at every table. Dangerous stuff, but a lot of fun whenever I go there.

Sure thing. I'm wondering if I've been there before just not knowing the name. As long as I've been here, it's hard to think I might have somehow missed a spot!

Feel free to post directions in this thread in case anyone wants to go there. Or post an entirely new thread about it w/ directions.

There used to be a Yaki Niku resturant about 1km from my house. They great food, and Y900 for all you could drink. It was great...until some Militiary groups started going there for parties and only eating a little...then staying until closing drinking all they could. Needless to say the place closed it's doors!

All you have to do is take 58 all the way up to ogimi. Cross the Henan bridge (it has traditional okinawan hats on the 4 corners of the bridge) and take the immediate right at the end of the bridge (heading north). I believe the signs for it are white with blue kanji on them. I know you have to pass a junkyard of sorts right after to take the right off of 58 after henan bridge. You travel about 1km on this road and then it splits. Take the right and eventually you will see a VERY small parking lot with a river by it. Just park and follow the river upstream!

Oh and buy an okinawa explorer book if you don't have one. They have a ton of good info on nice places to visit a lot of people miss.

I like Hamabay no Cha-ya tea/coffee house in the south. I can sit there sippin tea and coffee for hours looking out at the ocean. I really like the rustic feel of the place (a converted container) and that it sits virtually right on the ocean with just a little beach area before the wave break. Great to go there when typhoons are in the area if you like crashing surf sound and white foam.

There is also a pay to enter private beach tucked away off the main road on Ikei island. Up until 3 or 4 years ago hardly anyone found it, but then the owners started advertising it. It is still good, and I like that they don't mind that visitors bring their dogs.

Call me crazy but I really liked the Daei in Naha. So sad to see them gone.

There are 2 great Isakays in Naha which I like. One is Onisan in Matsayama. I'll post back when I get the correct name and spelling from my wife on the other but they are both good.

Oh man. Onisan is great. Man, I haven't been there in a few years. I loved that place when I went.
