Before the contestants appear coming down the red carpet for their accomplishments, here are my nomimations for the title Ugliest Street in Okinawa:
This street has no trees on the side and is virtually lined with used car shops. The overhead tangle of wiring makes you feel like you are under some weird spider's nest. Just aweful. Even the bozuzoku don't ride much on this ugly street.
What can you say? Just atrocious. Perhaps if they changed those ailing palm trees that are not indigenous to Okinawa and hence quite unhealthy looking (reminds me of that sickly tree in Charlie Brown's Christmas Special) to an indigenous banyan tree like the Gajumaru tree, it could improve a lot. Oh, and as dk said once before, just bulldoze down all those old delapidated store buildings in Ginowan Oyama, along with those churches there as well. All run down buildings. And Rout58 needs a moratorium on Pachinko Parlors.
Well, those are my three nominations for the Okinawa's Ugliest Street Award. Do you have any others, or would you like to support those candidates?Oh, just got to role your windows up and not breath any of the dust from the mountains they have been hacking down for the last 40 years to make mortar, sand, and gravel for concrete. If you look out your left window to the ocean it is not so bad, but if you happen to look out the right window you will not see any green vegetation. Oh, the vegetation is there all right, it is just that it is covered in a white powdered dust from all the sand and rock mining. A real lung health hazzard in the countryside! Hahahahaha. Man, great topic. I'm half tempted to run a front page story about this on our website.
![]() I'll comment more later. Going to try to get out of my office soon. |

Hey, this is great stuff man. Brings back memories. Unfortunately, being away for almost eight years, any ugly streets I may think about nominating may have been beautified by now. But the curving road on Chatan Cho where I used to live drove me nuts. It reminded me of driving through a friggin' maze. The scenery wasn't all that great either with all those old houses/apartments and no place to park.
Park Street (aka BC street) was looking a little crappy when I left to. Seemed like it was almost reverting back to those old 1982-1983 days when I was a young airman. |

Yeah, Park Avenue is on its way to becoming a contender. All those metallic white dome coverings they lined the street with are really starting to rust out. Shouldn't be long.

Well, you've covered quite a lot of Okinawa there, I drive on R58 every day from Ginowan to
Kadena, and I guess the rundown antique shops area there is the worst, but I live there so I guess I have just grown used to it. For me the worst area is the Lions Mansion town area near the Convention centre, mainly because I think they are ugly, I would rather live in a run down housing estate/slum than there. Those buildings have taken over the Island, and am sure one day it will simply be called OKINAWA - Home of the Lions Mansion. Sorry- just every time I see another one being built, just makes me blood boil! What Okinawa needs is more houses, not apartments everywhere, it is virtually impossible to find a small house to rent, one way of stopping people from owning pets I suppose. Perhaps this subject should have been in the rant section. |

How about Hwy 329 from 330 all the way down into Naha. There is absolutely nothing worth looking at along that road!

My vote goes for 330 from Ganeko to Futenma Shrine.
I live nearby and try to avoid that stretch at all costs. I would much rather take a leisurely cruise up Highway 29 when I need to get to the Kitanaka-Chatan-Okinawa City area. Peace, BK out

Ok, I will also vote for the 330 from Ganeko to Futenma shrine area.
It is ugly, and really horrible to drive along, of course, if they would hurry up and get rid of Futenma base they would be able to make new roads, and we wouldn't have to make a long detour just to get to the City office, and the road from Ojana up to Ganeko would not always be congested. |
