like I said - it may be an american thing.

But generally a Japanese bank will want stability (same job for 4 years or so, married) to make sure you won't do a runner.

I applied for a loan about 2 years back. Had 3+ years with a law firm in Tokyo under my belt, and the first thing the guy asked was if I was married. Not how much I could afford, not how much I was getting paid - which was very decent, but if I was married.
