Just the photo had me rolling in the office. This schmuck must have literally bought every single device on the shelf. Maybe the fact that he never actually served a day explains why he THOUGHT his rack might have been believable.

Look at the photo of this dude and just TRY not to start laughing. The White House and Presidential Service badges really tie the whole thing together.

It is Pat’s birthday on November 6, and elections are the day after. It gets me thinking about a conversation I had with Pat before we joined the military. He spoke about the risks with signing the papers. How once we committed, we were at the mercy of the American leadership and the American people. How we could be thrown in a direction not of our volition. How fighting as a soldier would leave us without a voice… until we got out.

Much has happened since we handed over our voice:

Somehow our elected leaders were subverting international law and humanity by setting up secret prisons around the world, secretly kidnapping people, secretly holding them indefinitely, secretly not charging them with anything, secretly torturing them. Somehow that overt policy of torture became the fault of a few “bad apples” in the military.

Somehow back at home, support for the soldiers meant having a five-year-old kindergartener scribble a picture with crayons and send it overseas, or slapping stickers on cars, or lobbying Congress for an extra pad in a helmet. It’s interesting that a soldier on his third or fourth tour should care about a drawing from a five-year-old; or a faded sticker on a car as his friends die around him; or an extra pad in a helmet, as if it will protect him when an IED throws his vehicle 50 feet into the air as his body comes apart and his skin melts to the seat.

Somehow the more soldiers that die, the more legitimate the illegal invasion becomes.

Somehow American leadership, whose only credit is lying to its people and illegally invading a nation, has been allowed to steal the courage, virtue and honor of its soldiers on the ground.

Somehow those afraid to fight an illegal invasion decades ago are allowed to send soldiers to die for an illegal invasion they started.

Somehow faking character, virtue and strength is tolerated.

Somehow profiting from tragedy and horror is tolerated.

Somehow the death of tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of people is tolerated.

Somehow subversion of the Bill of Rights and The Constitution is tolerated.

Somehow suspension of Habeas Corpus is supposed to keep this country safe.

Somehow torture is tolerated.

Somehow lying is tolerated.

Somehow reason is being discarded for faith, dogma, and nonsense.

Somehow American leadership managed to create a more dangerous world.

Somehow a narrative is more important than reality.

Somehow America has become a country that projects everything that it is not and condemns everything that it is.

Somehow the most reasonable, trusted and respected country in the world has become one of the most irrational, belligerent, feared, and distrusted countries in the world.

Somehow being politically informed, diligent, and skeptical has been replaced by apathy through active ignorance.

Somehow the same incompetent, narcissistic, virtueless, vacuous, malicious criminals are still in charge of this country.

Somehow this is tolerated.

Somehow nobody is accountable for this.

In a democracy, the policy of the leaders is the policy of the people. So don’t be shocked when our grandkids bury much of this generation as traitors to the nation, to the world and to humanity. Most likely, they will come to know that “somehow” was nurtured by fear, insecurity and indifference, leaving the country vulnerable to unchecked, unchallenged parasites.

Luckily this country is still a democracy. People still have a voice. People still can take action. It can start after Pat’s birthday.

Brother and Friend of Pat Tillman,

And just in case someone is wondering if this essay is legit, yes it even checks out at Snopes.

I couldn't imagine walking away from a 3.6 million dollar contract to go join the Army or what it was like for his family after finding out the truth surrounding his death was kept from them. :-|

U.S. military-age youth are increasingly unfit to serve — mostly because they’re in such lousy shape.

According to the latest Pentagon figures, a full 35 percent, or more than one-third, of the roughly 31.2 million Americans aged 17 to 24 are unqualified for military service because of physical and medical issues. And, said Curt Gilroy, the Pentagon’s director of accessions, “the major component of this is obesity. We have an obesity crisis in the country. There’s no question about it.”

The Pentagon draws its data from the Centers for Disease Control, which regularly tracks obesity. The steadily rising trend is not good news for military recruiters, despite their recent successes, nor for the overall health of the U.S. population.

In 1987, according to the CDC, a mere 6 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds, or about 1 out of 20, were obese. In 2008, 22 years later, 23 percent of that age group — almost 1 out of 4 — was considered to be obese.

The CDC measures obesity by body mass index, a figure calculated from height and weight that is considered a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people. According to the CDC, the body mass index for a man standing 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighing 170 pounds is 21.8; the normal range lies between 18.5 and 24.9. Below that range is considered underweight; a BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight. A person with a body mass index of 30 or greater is considered to be obese.

Obese individuals are at increased risk for a number of diseases and health conditions, including hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, some cancers and other problems, according to the CDC. In addition to those concerns, the military rejects obese recruits in part because so much extra weight likely couldn’t be dropped during the course of basic training — even if they could get through the entire program.

“Kids are just not able to do push-ups,” Gilroy said. “And they can’t do pull-ups. And they can’t run.”

The reasons are “almost common knowledge, Gilroy said — what he called “the couch potato syndrome” and the widespread elimination of scholastic physical fitness programs.

I received this in an email from an old friend. Please read and take a moment to let it sink in...

You're a 19 year old kid.
You're critically wounded and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley.

November 11, 1965.
LZ X-ray , Vietnam .

Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away,
that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in.

You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns and you know you're not getting out.
Your family is 1/2 way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again.

As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.

Then - over the machine gun noise - you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter.
You look up to see an unarmed Huey. But ... it doesn't seem real because no Medi-Vac markings are on it.

Ed Freeman is coming for you.

He's not Medi-Vac so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire anyway.

Even after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come.
He's coming anyway.

And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board.
Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire to the doctors and nurses.

And, he kept coming back!! 13 more times!!

He took about 30 of you and your buddies out who would never have gotten out.

Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman, died last Wednesday at the age of 80, in Boise , Idaho .

May God Rest His Soul.
I bet you didn't hear about this hero's passing, but we've sure seen a whole bunch
about Michael Jackson. . .

I bet this thread will piss some folks off but I am sick of hearing how much military members "sacrifice" and how "families serve too".

IMHO they don't sacrifice shit.

What do they serve? They get to travel the globe, free medical/dental, base priveleges, first priority for government jobs overseas.

They get every benefit of being in the military and them some without doing anything.

It's the single military members that make the sacrifices, get stuck with all the shit details.

I see a trend with the DoD where it's **** the military members. They care more about dependants than the ones who actually serve.

I'll add more later.

SnaFu, where you at? I know you'll have a field day with this thread. :smile4:

While I was growing up my parents were active in the American Legion and VFW. Because of that I was constantly in the company of WWI, WWII, Korean War and returning Vietnam Vets. There were a couple of things I always remembered:

The overwhelming majority of those vets expressed that the only glory in war is surviving.

While nearly all were extremely patriotic the pride in what they did was generally inversely proportional to the intensity of the combat they experienced.

A number of these vets participated in campaigns where they lost many more men in one battle than we have lost in a single year in the War on Terror.

Fast forward to 2009:
Now these are only observations from my perspective in the rear with the gear. This is not intended to be disrespectful or demeaning to the men and women serving in our armed forces so try not to take this out of context.

Most active duty military people I know talk about the war in Iraq like we used to talk about a varsity wrestling match. Everyone seems to know someone who lost his or her life and everyone seems to have killed at least one enemy combatant. Some even brag about wasting civilians. And nearly all say they want to go to Afghanistan as if it is something to look forward to.

When I think about today’s men and women in uniform compared to the veterans I knew growing up, I wonder how eager some of these people I know would have been to enlist or return to the fight if the odds were not so much in their favor.

I can’t help but think that it is easy to brag about what is worth dying for when you probably have a better chance of survival on the battlefield than a minority has growing up in the ghetto. I will be curious to see the attitudes that prevail if the conditions on the ground in Afghanistan continue to deteriorate.

I'm getting out of the service sometime next year. On my way home I wanted to take terminal leave in Hawaii - but where should I stay? I'd like to hike a volcano, surf, scuba dive, and otherwise bum out.

I got reservations at Hale Koa, but I wonder if Kilauea would be better?

Or should I try for somewhere other than Hawaii via circuitous travel?

So my passport went through the wash. :scared:

I don't know how anal japanese authorities are in regards to passports, the cover came completely off which I believe deems it unserviceable...although the pages feel worn and most are dog eared. However, you can still read all the information and the photos and barcodes seem to be intact, along with the original embarkation card they stapled inside when I originally reported here.

Anyways, even with expedited service I'm not sure if I'll get a replacement passport in time. I'm not too confident about showing this to Japanese entry officials either.

So here's the situation. I'm returning to Okinawa from the States (I took EML leave and have both my leave papers and signed EML Orders). I'll be flying back commercial. Will I be able to board the plane and enter the country without a passport, and just my ID card and both leave documents by virtue of SOFA status? Is there anything else I'll need? Or at least any advice?

The passport office doesn't open until Monday so I still have a couple days to sit and think on this.
