A Canadian? http://www.japanupdate.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15283&goto=newpost Sun, 15 Nov 2009 21:19:54 GMT Hey there, I'm a Canadian interested in working/living in Okinawa some day. I've been studying Japanese for the past 4-5 years (and recently a bit of Okinawan on my own) and other aspects of Japanese society in university courses. To further compliment my studies on Okinawa and Japan, I figured I'd join these forums (which I've been following for a year now) and actively get to know those on it.

I understand most of this forum is American and, of those, many are in the military. While I personally don't believe in or support the American military presence in Okinawa, I am not here to criticize you guys about it. Hopefully we can get along. ;)

I am interested in learning more about Okinawan culture, issues, and opportunities so I can get a good idea of how best to reach my goal of entering and staying in Okinawa. Since I am Canadian, it's hard to get something like a base job (and indeed it would be hypocritical of me to do so) so I look forward to learning about the opportunities that exist for non-American foreigners to Okinawa. The JET Programme is something I am considering.

Now you may be wondering: Why in the world would you want to live, let alone work, in Okinawa? Well it's simple, I just love everything about the place. It has its faults (highest unemployment in Japan, base problems, etc.) but it also has a great lifestyle, people, and environment. It's a place, I think, that is best suited for those who are in no rush to get through life.

I look forward to meeting everyone.

currently in Kyoto with my family and will be moving to Oki next year.

I'm a computer programmer, into motorbikes (offroad, onroad, whatever) and looking to get back into MMA after many years away.

Not sure where in Oki we'll end up, but likely near a base to get good international schooling for the little ones...

Recomendations on good places to live (on tiny citizen budget) appreciated!

Cheers,

Leon ]]>

New Member - Looking for English Language Schools http://www.japanupdate.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15268&goto=newpost Sat, 14 Nov 2009 21:10:22 GMT Hello all,
I'm an elementary teacher in Alaska looking to relocate to the Naha area. I teach for a living and I suspect that would be the best line of work for me in Naha. I've visited twice in the last four years and loved it. The weather is a 180 from Alaska's climate. We're heading into a cold winter.

If anyone has school names in the Naha area, or websites - I'm just searching the net and not coming up with anything.

Thanks for the help,
Robert ]]>

First was as an Army brat from 1973-1976. My dad was XO of US Army... Introducing myself to the audio radiance...Jon here...I was on Okinawa twice...

First was as an Army brat from 1973-1976. My dad was XO of US Army Medical Materiel Command Pacific (USAMMAPAC) on Warehouse Row in the Machinato (Makiminato) Service Area (the MSA -- that's Camp Kinser for all you post-1978 folks).

Our family lived in upper Rycom Plaza (4272 Plaza -- or 4272 Easley Drive, since we never used an actual street address for mail), otherwise referred to as "Snob Hill", as it was where unit CGs, COs, XOs and senior DoD civilians lived (except those in the USAF). The Army CG's residence (Quarters 1) was just down the road from my house, as were the quarters for the commanders of other Army, Navy and Marine Corps units on the island.

I've attached a pic of our old home, undergoing renovations a few months back. Tip o' th' chapeau to my friend, Bill Bechtel, for taking the pic...

When I was the there, the Top Of The Rock (TOTR) Officers Open Mess was still operating, as was the annex, The Ponderosa -- which also had the pool for all Plaza residents.

I attended Kubasaki HS from my sophomore through senior years, graduating from the campus in 1976. My younger siblings attended Sukiran (Zukeran) ES in Kishaba Terrace and Pacific MS in the Awase Flats. My mom was a member of the Okinawa Army Officers Wives Club and worked as a volunteer purchasing agent at their gift shop at Fort Buckner (now MCB Camp Foster). I spent all of my summers working as a paid Summer Hire employee -- doing everything from mowing lawns, painting transient quarters, moving furniture, issuing & inventorying warehouse stock, to moving cargo pallets.

I did the standard teen stuff -- hung out with friends and classmates in the housing area or the teen club. Occasionally trying to get into trouble with the law...but was never really good at it...

I was also a work-study at AFRT- (later FEN-) Okinawa, and a member of the station's Explorer Post 190. Our home was just 3 homes down from the FEN studios...which made an easy "commute" for me after my work-study (and occasional staff fill-in) time. Besides learning the "old school" broadcast trade as a work-study & Explorer, we went camping with the post to Ie Shima island a few times.

After graduating from KHS and working Summer Hire for Facilities Engineers (warehouseman), I enlisted in the US Navy -- shipped from Kadena AB to Recruit Training Center (RTC) San Diego for boot camp.

This epistle to be continued...
