Hello all. I have been trying to research festivals/events since I got here and havent really been able to find anything reliable. Im in still not allowed off base till around mid Jan when my command decides to give us liberty since we just got here and I would like to go to something other than a bar by gate 2 like everyone is planning to do. If anyone can show me to a good place to find small events or festivals or anything interesting going on around Oki I would greatly appreciate it! (Im sorry if theres a calender here on this site, I havent been able to find it :-|

The cherry blossom festivals up north should start at the end of January or early February. There will be tours through MCCS (http://www.mccsokinawa.com/mccs.asp?id=31) or Kadena ITT (http://kadenaservices.com/tours/index.html) going up there. That's the easiest way to do it when new to the island.

Hey, i'm not new to the island and still don't know where all the fests are at. That is a good question, wonder if there is any year round calendar of all the fests on oki, town and base.

I'm sure it's not everything though, cuz it doesn't include the annual girls gone wild nude 1K marathon race or the 200 meter crab-walk after too many drinks from the snack back to the house...:w00t:

In English, I doubt it. I was working on one, but got sidetracked. Maybe I'll pick it back up again.

Actually there is one in English and it is pretty good too.:thumbup1:

OkinawaConvention & Visitors Bureau Home Page in English (http://www.ocvb.or.jp/index.php?current=Page_Header&action=Top_Page&mode=isel&lang=en&name=top_page)

This years events are not all listed because many of the dates are not decided upon yet if you hit the calendar on the right side of the page under the event schedule you can go back through last years listing and get an idea of when what festivals or events occured and that would be a great guidline for this year as well for most of the events.

i would advise caution if you plan on consuming food at these festivals wether on or off base... the local vendors sanitation practices are virtually non-existent... enjoy the sights.. but guard your stomach

If it is hot off the grill, it should be ok. I wouldn't eat anything that has been sitting though....that goes for any country including the US.

You mean that there is actually food sold at these festivals too?

Damn after 20 plus years of going to them I never knew that, I only thought that they sold beer.:first: :w00t:

(I agree with you here btw, )

Beer and inflatable hammers!

My favorite festivals are the local ones- the city festivals. They vary in coolness, but always a good time.

Probably my favorite festival is the one held on Zamami though. Hundreds of tourists, live bands, beer, tourists, food, contests, and tourists.

Also, there are many tourists there.

yes watch out for that vendor food. If you're drunk it really doesn't matter though. You'll just wake up the next morning with a bad case of mud butt.
