View Full Version : Does AFN really even need djs?

Because good grief, my IPOD could do the same job on shuffle. I swear to god it's the same 15 songs all day every day. But hey, I guess you guys need your PSA's. :o

I can't complain since I'm not a service member or anything I guess. But dang...

Some of these new DJ's they have put on the air......good lord! It is a good thing I can't reach through the air waves and choke them. Nevermind AFN seems to mainly be stuck on one genre of music and any others are used as just fillers, LOL.

AFN's AM station is still broken.

I was always annoyingly amused at the "Pacific's choice for radio" bit. Sure we have a choice in radio stations here, but not if we want to listen to something in English! (I'm not counting J-Pop English.)

(The following is my personal opinion.)
I absolutely HATE with a SEETHING LOATHING that "Jane Noise" DJ/news chick who has that disease where she must say her real Hispanic name in a thick Latina accent as if she's Maria Conchito Alfonso Gonsalez Fuentes Chiquita Banana Susana Banana. She also has the annoying, whiny little girl voice that makes me want to smack her in the voice box to drop it down a few octaves.

And now we return you to your regularly scheduled programming... :D

I love the 'technical difficulties' with the AM antenna. It wasn't very technical at all. The antenna was old as shit and rusted to hell. It just fell over, they were asking my shop and the antenna shop for suggestions on the new antenna.

Much as I hate to admit it,.......I will have to agree with the wiff. (I know, call CNN). The girl has the most monotone voice and trips over her script through the entire segment. At least until she gets to her name which she turns on the accent and rattles off her name at top speed. Maybe she needs to spend some time here at the CP so we can teach her how to talk...lol

It's almost painful to listen to them sometimes...I realize some of them are new to this, but others aren't...and for some reason they feel that they absolutely must read the time a certain way! Like..."it's 27 minutes until 4 o'clock"...how about damn 3:33 idiot!

Sometimes they are not that bad, but I just feel that they are trying to mimick other successful dj's from the US and it just isn't working. I worked as a dj for 8 years, and you really just have to relax and be yourself, no fake voices, don't try talking too deep, or too smooth, just relax!

Best advice in the world.

I just can't stand that Sammy guy's voice lol. No offense Sammy if you're out there. I think that's his name... You seem like a nice enough guy! You just sound more like a youth group coordinator than a radio dj... It's not you man! It's not you! No offense...

I can't stand the breakfast/brunch buffet lady's voice either. Just too dang grandmotherly or something for me...

And don't forget to dress properly. Seems like the military people have problems in knowing how to dress properly off base and need to be told how to do it.

Go to youtube and start learning about phish. Then and only then shall you be cleansed of that damn umbrella song.

There's a few decent bands out there today (not phish, they broke up), but they'll never appear on the radio. The radio always has been and always will be for nothing but pop crap. It's always been that way. Pop culture is always flooded with crap. Why do you think punk or metal always goes to :cursing: after it hits the mainstream? Because it gets changed to that poppy matter that 14 year old chicks can scream their heads off at.

Everyone says video killed the radio star. Screw that, the DJs did it to themselves.

They play SOME music.

I've been surprised from time to time, but today, driving to work, I had to turn my radio volume to 0 the whole 30 minute drive. I kept hoping to hear something good to wake me up. Nope. Delilah. Volume to 0. Chris. Volume to 0. PunkPop. Volume to Zero. Carey Underwood, etc, etc.

I do complain about music a lot. But there's a whole lot better music out there. I don't mind pop. It's ok to hear it from time to time. I swear, like someone else said, though, they're stuck on one genre for most of the day.

But hey, maybe that's what the base wants.

Speak of the devil: the umbrella song just came on. It's just starting to crack me up more than anything.

I've thought about actually getting a group and writing down every single song played throughout the day and posting a running tally of how many times the same song gets played, and what it's play-rate/hour actually is. I might just be exaggerating and it might not be that bad, but it seems that bad. :p

idk what the radio is like over there but ugh what you guys are talking about is pretty much what goes on everywhere, on every station. They have to play what people want to hear, and you got people tuning in every minute. and they all wanna hear that one song they think its good. and for the most part, its the same thing as the guy next in line...so really..they don't have much of a choice but to play same shit often... They'll play that umbrella song and 30 mins later someone else requests it cuz he didn't hear it when they played it the 30 first times cuz they were not listening...

Dude, people are always gonna complain. If you wanna know the truth, we have drastically changed up our playlists. We play Classic Rock every hour now. We also play country. Rock, and even Adult Contemporary. It may be hard to listen to for a while, but your song will come on. As for the repetitive songs: Ask yourself this question-- "Have I ever said that I always hear the same songs this while I'm in the states?"

The answer is: of course you have. If people didn't listen to songs, there wouldn't be a chart, if there wasn't a chart, there wouldn't be a radio. Artists would never be vying for those top spots. Go to www.radioandrecords.com--

Take the top 15 songs of most of the categories. This is what we play.

Could you really, in all honesty, give me an informed opinion and gameplan on how to fix it? The dudes at headquarters pretty much dictate what we have to play.

Then if it is about dictation, your MOS could just be automated away with a simple program. If you are there to bring the human element into it, then why not think out of the box?

C'mon, man -- at least ban that freakin Umbrella Song. Feed us something, but don't tell us you are like the North Korean news lady that has to follow the party line as strict as she does when dispersing stuff over the air waves.

Just forget to play that Umbrella Song. Do you guys have someone counting how many times you play the play list? and then coming up to you at the end of the day saying, "Sammy, you only played the Umbrella Song 3 times during your show. You were supposed to do 4 times, and that will count on your rating performance."

But, all in all, Sammy, I am a regular listener and think you all do a pretty good job. We are just poking at some of the points we think could make it better. That's all.

What is Zeroyon?

Anonymity let's many of the military members here speak their mind on critical points without having to worry about the brass coming down on them. You can't do that as SammyFineman, Sammy.

If there are gripes that many are thinking of, the brass should be checking here to keep there thumbs on the pulse of what some of the troops are thinking, but really can't speak in the open about.

Man, I hate Rush. But, I have to confess it is entertaining.

btw, Sammy, I often hear that spot about a.m. radio being off and asking for us to be patient while they get it back up on the air. That is all fine, but that is kind of an inadequate PSA in my opinion. At least from time to time inform us on where in the process of getting it back up is.

For example, is it like 10% done, 30% done, etc...? How about an estimated time of completion? Contractors before starting a construction time will give their contracting customer an estimation of completion date along with the cost? So what completion date was given as an estimate?

Because I haven't heard one I am speculating that construction hasn't even started. Is that right?

Yeah, I sometimes do too. Anything to pass the time while we're crawling our way through 58.

I don't know. With certain projects, it's almost impossible to say when something will be fixed. I've had my fair share of projects like this where the office girls would be hounding us non-freaking-stop asking "when are you going to be done? when is it going to be fixed? how much longer? when is it going to be fixed? when? when? when?" when the only real answer is "when it is fixed."

Granted, this is only sometimes. Usually, problems like that only occur for us when something is broken, not when something is under development. Breaks are chaos. Development has order. Sometimes it takes forever just to figure out WHAT the actual problem is.

Because I haven't heard one I am speculating that construction hasn't even started. Is that right?
Generally a bad idea to speculate unless you're actually part of the fix-it team. Customers who do this drive me up the freaking wall. "It's been broke for 3 days! You guys must not be doing anything!!!"

Get rid of all those idiotic PSAs too

Those PSAs AND Kadena Services and MCCSs spots are just an insult to the intelligence of service members. Not what they are telling us, but how they go about doing it.

The TV one with Bubba and his friend talking about energy conservation is just down right embarrassing and makes Marines look like idiots.

The trampoline safety one is another embarrassing one.

The Kadena Club Card for discounts where the wife is just yelling with a shrill voice at her husband for not using it comes across as making military wives look just freaky bananas.

And then there is the series in which threat of violence and snideness is used regularly, the same guy with a really deep voice saying stuff like, "Suck it out yourself snakecharmer." That series with that guy doing the voice overs is just down in the bottom of the muk bucket.

Agreed, but that is why I am asking, because it hasn't been 3 days, and it hasn't been 3 months. They should at least have gotten an estimate from the contractor, and if repair and construction has already started, at least from time to time give us an update on where in the process it stands at the moment.

Doesn't have to be an everyday update, but once or twice a month would be a nice thing to hear.

I do loath AFN for playing the same songs over and over but at least they try. I usually use my ipod, unless I'm at work and I have to use the radio. Once a bad song comes on I just change the station to something japanese, they have a lot of smooth jazz that is really enjoyable.

However, every time I hear, Underwood, rascal flatts, any country song, avril, or any other crap music I do want to pull my hair out.

The military should send these people to a real broadcasting school if they want them to be partially good at entertaining their troops.

The only time this afternoon show guy does a halfway decent job is when he takes calls. He seems to be ok when interacting with callers. Other than that, if he doesn't have them as props and has to provide monologue, he is horrible.

There used to be a lady dj on the radio about 6 or 7 years ago (I think she was 2nd or 3rd generation Jpn American and played the piano, too), and she was real good. She used to play at least once every show Susan Tedesky's "Hurts So Bad" song. She was really popular and JU did a story on her when she was leaving. After her a guy using the nickname, The Bull took over. He was good, too, and took a lot of swipes at the military and the command in what I thought was good humor and good taste, but then he was booted off for like a month or two.

Then he came back on and would make comments about how he was booted off and was told to toe the line. I think the brass didn't like him airing the reasons why he was taken off and then was taken off again. That was the last we heard of TheBull.

But those two djs had really breathed some life into AFN radio. Miss them.

Anyone recall them?

I think the studio should be fitted with a electric shocker - it's simple, actually - when the DJ's talk too long, say stupid jokes, or play a shitty song, the shocker will give them a smarting jolt - you would see rapid improvement!

Great idea, but there needs to be a web application tied to the shocker, so that if the person plays a song that lots of people dislike, he/she gets lots of voltage. However, we should be limited to one shock per song. Don't wanna kill the guys.

That's actually a pretty cool idea.

At the current rate of AFN SUPH (Screw-Ups Per Hour), the constant jolting would either cause a base-wide power outage or incapacitate/kill the DJ, so perhaps it's not a great idea. Even technology can't cope with the raw suckiness of the midday DJ, for example.

Why can't we get the whole freakin piddly 5 mins of news at the top of the hour without it being freakin cut off?

Samyfineman - I like him and his voice, I think it is quite sexy!

It is those women dj's I hate, they laugh too much, that really puts me off when I'm listening to the radio.

I agree too, their voices are particularly grating first thing in the AM as I am driving to work. Please hurry up and fix 648 so at least I can listen to NPR instead.

What is annoying is J-Noise I hope she is gone, I quit listening cuz I got tired of her. Here she would be talking about something. Dead air, then start talking about something else. Then oh, I am sorry I was reading the wrong one. What a dumbass! Here she would laugh at every single thing. She doesn't know how to read.

The DJ's don't know what the yen rate is. Here they will say the yen rate is 118, but once you take money out on base its actually 112 and off base was 114.

Here I haven't listened to the radio J-noise bored me to death, kept playing same song - you could hear the same song in 2hrs! My husband couldn't stand her. She acts like she is 14yrs old. I did turn the radio on yesterday, they changed the songs around. Thank God we have the sponge bob movie playing non stop I rather listen to spongebob and patrick anyday!

Did they replace AresD with LadyLuv? I think LadyLuv should stick to R&B type stuff, because she has that soothing voice thing sometimes.

What's the deal with all the hiphop and rap music? I actually heard the Noise girl say she didn't want to play a country song, but had to follow the list. Who says that?!

When are they going to transfer Jane Maria Conchita Alfonso Gonzalez Alfredo Marinara Fuentes Sausilito Noise OFF the air? Her voice is annoying, and she's inept at reading the news. Don't they have an opening for her in Addis Abéba?

Yeah, I wish AFN would put people in a slot and let them play their style of music...at least that would work better! They used to do that on Saturday mornings. Sometimes you would have the little white guy playin' country then the next week something else.

This crap with giving them all the same list of 30 songs and making them all play it sucks! Who plays NWA then follows it up with Rascal Flats?

I'm not captivated. I am however tired of a lot of the music that is being played these days. I wish there was a maximum number of times you could play the same song in a 24 hour period. There is way too much music out there on CD to have to resort to playing the same song more than twice.
Now if someone requests that song after its been played on the radio 10 times already that day I can't blame the DJ.

I was thinking the same thing, or maybe, instead of having it as a limit per day, make it a limit per year.

That way, when a new song comes out and is the hottest thing around, sure, it can be played a few times per day, that's fine, but it won't be played past ___ hundred plays that year. It sounds like they pull their music out of a database anyway. Why not attach a counter to it. Call it the "# plays before mental breakdown cases appear" table field.

700 times per year is a good limit. That's about 2 plays a day, and if a song is incredibly hot ___, they can blow those ten plays per day if they want, and we still won't hear it to the point that we want to start breaking things. Or better yet, 700 times a year with a 4 plays per day limit cap. One play every six hours is still a lot. Two plays in 45 minutes is a bit retarded if you ask me (happened a few days ago with, I believe it was, the delilah song).

Yeah, but even in the states, you get songs played up to 4 times/hr if they are really hot! You don't even want to know how mad a radio station mgr can be!

Yes, but in the states, there are scores of different English speaking music stations to choose from on the radio. We have one English speaking music station here. It doesn't need to play the same song multiple times a day. Once a day, except by request, is sufficient. When they get the AM station back to offer a second English speaking music station, then play a song twice a day on FM.

In any case, get rid of that Jane Noise chiquita. Gawd, I dislike her being on the radio with a seething loathsome passion. I turn the volume down when she speaks, and then back again for music.

There used to be a great woman dj at AFN about 6 years ago, and just about everyday close to her sign out time she'd say, "I need my Susan Tedeschi for the day" and then let that song rip.

She made that song popular here then, because after awhile people would be calling her in to play it.

Sounds much better on FM than in YouTubes live vid.

To hell with that! That damn Carrie Underwood will haunt my dreams for years to come, along with every other overplayed, crap-ass, teeny-bopping, candy-ass, top 40 song to grace the airwaves.

AFN is the special olympics of broadcasting - everyone's a winner! Fundamentals like organization, preparation, and TALENT are thrown to the wind.

With AFN, "quality" is about as relevent as "truth". It's just a freeze-dried, no-balls military variant of the shitty clearchannel corporate radio that is starting to dominate civilian airwaves. You want to know my worst nightmare? That AFN is just a harbinger for the grim future of civilian radio back in the states!

That would suck immensely - to finally escape this rock and the daily testicle-hammering that is the AFN experience only to encounter a civilian radio market that's bereft of life, creativity and independant thought. I'd feel like Charlton Heston in "Planet of the Apes."

You know, I hear there are some very developed simians - maybe the military should train the great apes to pick music and DJ? Hell, they've already been to space, and in the crappy movie "Congo" they did some sign language, so they're already overqualified for AFN DJ'ing by a stretch. In fact, if a chimpanzee can negotiate the banana peel off of a banana, then he's ready for a career in AFN.

I'm also sick of that nelly fruitato (sp) song with akon. Woooohoooo, whooooo, makes me wanna puke:barf:. What are people thinking! Akon has the most annoying voice, not to mention he's an asshole! "Hey lets put akon in my song so I can annoy as many people as possible.".

Music is really starting to go down hill. I remember I happened to see the best rock video award for MTV and was horrorifed! AFI won! They aren't rock and they dress like a bunch of depressed fags.

Also, what happened to being orginal and sticking to your orginal music genre? Gwen Stefani is a good example of this. Once she first started out in no doubt she was in a crappy ska band. Then they changed their image and became more of a pop/rock/punk around 2003. Now she dropped her band all together and got a bunch of a japanese girls (one is okinawan) to follow her around and changed her music to hip hop. Nelly Fruitato is another one! Started out as just plain wierd music and now she considers herself hip hop too! It's not limited to american artist either! Namie Amuro used to be j-pop but now her last album was titled "queen of hip hop".

The funniest part is a lot of these 'artist' don't even make their own beats! They get someone like timberland to make their beats for them! What happened to being original?!??! :end rant:

Radiohead continues to impress me with every new album. Wilco too. There's plenty of great musicians still around, you just won't hear them on the radio.

A lot of musicians start out simple, and as they become more and more successful are introduced to new, exciting forms of music. They then try to adapt some of these new, exciting styles into their music and thus change happens. I like Gwen Stefani now a whole lot more than I ever did when she was in No Doubt. Ska gets lamesauce all over the place.

My whole point is music sucks now-a-days. I guess I'm just upset rock music is dead.:dead:
It's not dead. You just have to be a little open minded with some of the new stuff coming out. One of the problems is we're stuck on the little island of Okinawa where, to listen to rock, you're pretty limited in places to go. Gate 2 and Koza have always been hard rock. For me, it sometimes seems like there is no other genre than hard rock on this island, which makes me not even want to head out to Koza at all. I like Hard Rock. I like A LOT of genres. I just hate hearing the same thing all the time.

DougP
08-24-2007, 02:54 PM
I liked Gwen Stefani and No Doubt better before they got all pop. I stopped listening to her(them) long before she left the band. Music isn't dead its just that real music, the good kind of music that takes real artists hours and hours on end to create, is not what you're going to hear on the radio. I can see why people think rock is dead. I can see why people think there are no artists out there that write their own songs. You have to look harder these days to find them. There was a time you could just tune in to your favorite station and hear great examples of real talented artists. That day is pretty much gone.

Koopa and All,

Here's a theory - she's now enjoying a thriving, rewarding career in the food services industry (aka flipping burgers) because the average AFN DJ has a slim chance of making it in civilian broadcasting with their skillset (or lack thereof).

Zeroyon, don't hesitate to keep hating on these clowns, because they hold some of the responsibility for the music on the airwaves (not all, admittedly), but more importantly, their pathetic on-air antics and daily dosage of yen rate/time/temp brainwashing effectively liquifies the contents of my skull.

On several shows the DJ's alluded to an on-site broadcast tomorrow. Therefore, tomorrow's forecast, courtesy of the 18th wing asshole support group, calls for self-aggrandizing antics, mostly idiotic jokes, a good chance of on-air cliches, and a 100% chance of sheer ass-hatness. Compared to a week ago, these DJs or Deejays or however you want to spell it are showing serious signs of improvement. I actually had a good time listening pretty much the whole time from 10am to 6pm. Call me a sellout or whatever. Fine. I know enough about music that if anyone called me a sellout for giving someone a well-deserved pat on the back, their words wouldn't even phase me.

DJ STOLE MA BIKE!

Three highlights of the day

Hearing "Little Wing" on my way to work. I don't remember EVER hearing that song on AFN. Ever.
The DJ that refused to play "Hey Delilah" because "We do not play terrible music during the afternoon show".
The DJ that refused to play New Kids on the Block on the radio (or was that yesterday?) TWICE.Any one of those could stand alone as a reason for me to be impressed with what I was hearing on AFN a week ago. That second one about made me fall out of my seat at work.

(Not directed at anyone... just a thought)

Have you ever seen someone on TV give what appears to be a heart felt speach but its sincerity is lost in the roming of there eyes while they read the teleprompt? How about that hot new artist who's songs that were writen by someone else are topping the charts?

It happens all the time now a days. Nobody can be themselves. Behind every popular figure there's someone behind them pulling the strings. DJs these days don't appear to be any different.

I applaud those who can stand up for them selves and speak with their own voice. I can't stand sheep like Ryan Seacrest and Carson Daly who constantly kiss celebrities asses. For god sakes I wish someone with the microphone would grow some stones and tell those petty bitches Britney, Lindsey Lohan and Nicole Ritchie what they really think.

Why is it when one of those whores goes to jail for 5 minutes and get out of 2 or 10 DUIs in a row, do we have to hear about it on the news?

ahhhhgh rant off :)

Great rant dude. :)
Have you ever seen someone on TV give what appears to be a heart felt speach but its sincerity is lost in the roming of there eyes while they read the teleprompt? How about that hot new artist who's songs that were writen by someone else are topping the charts?
Yessir. One reason I prefer bands over singers, actually.

It happens all the time now a days. Nobody can be themselves. Behind every popular figure there's someone behind them pulling the strings. DJs these days don't appear to be any different.
I agree. The only difference is that, like you, well, or like most of you, the DJs are first and foremost active duty military and when given a command are most likely expected to follow. Perhaps AFN DJs are given a little extra creative freedom. I'm really not sure. I still get annoyed when I hear some of them talk, but I'm very talented at phasing out people's voices when I'm at work. :D Useful talent.

I applaud those who can stand up for them selves and speak with their own voice.
Same here, and by playing devil's advocate, I could even go so far as to make a comparrison about how, if you service members (not you personally, not sure if you're even military) expect your DJs to flex their nuts in public and go against what they're told yet you aren't willing to do the same and speak up against ideas you don't fully support that you're doing the same exact thing. But I'm just playing devil's advocate.

I hope I'm making sense with that and not coming across as offensive. It's getting late...

I can't stand sheep like Ryan Seacrest and Carson Daly who constantly kiss celebrities asses. For god sakes I wish someone with the microphone would grow some stones and tell those petty bitches Britney, Lindsey Lohan and Nicole Ritchie what they really think.
I'd like to punch that midget (Seacrest) in the face. I hate him, I hate Simon, I hate Paula, I hate that other dude, I hate all those lame singers that show has ever featured, I hate every single aspect of American Idol.

You want American Idol? Throw on some Bob Dylan. Throw on some Jackson 5. Throw on some Beatles. That show hasn't put out one actual Idol since it's first season. To me, that spells F-A-I-L-U-R-E.

And before someone tells me "Well, Chris Whatshisface is an idol! He's selling a ton of CDs!"

Dude has one album. One album does not make you an idol. It makes you the next big thing. He's actually very talented, and he may very well pan out to be something decent, but he hasn't proven his worth yet.

Yeah, he was on today. Have no idea who he is. Athlete? I found him annoying and just phased him out.

Not active duty anymore woot! Yeah I hear you on the extra creative freedom part. I was actually mainly refering to DJs back in the states mostly.
Radio hosts act a lot like puppets these days

AFN is a part of my life now and has been for 30 years. Kudos to those of you who make it happen with a shitty budget, political mandates, and with hardly anyone to do it with.
