Has anyone out there been to okuma? How is it? What is your opinion on the place? Has anyone been to the JAL Okuma pricate resort? What did you think about that?

I like it to go and party. i am single so it is ok. You need to have a few people there to have a great time. If you have a family it is a good environment for them tons of things to go in the water for them.

It's fun but it becomes a sausage fest really quick. Seriously! I was there about two weeks ago with my wife and 4 of her girl friends and a buddy of mine. We were in the bar at night and we were the only ones there. Then 3 marine guys came in, and of course instantly started hitting on all of them. Then they must have called in the reserve because about 20 more dudes came to the bar. We went back with them to their camp site and it looked like a bomb had went off. People laying on the ground, other dudes peeing on him, garbage everywhere, and tents knocked over.
But yeah if you stay in the family campground it's not bad.

Yeah, been up there. Have some good pics from up there too. Be prepared for roaches though. They have a double Murphy bed and these ridiculously small chairs that are "hide-a-beds" barely wide enough for an average sized kid to lay on......unless they got enough complaints to change them.
Not stayed in the JAL facility but had meetings over there and we really enjoyed their establishment. Clean & nice, so I would think it was likely a pretty nice place to stay. Though if you wanna be partying an hangin out I would say go for the military side.

So it seems like okuma is a nigh spotnot just a daytime gathering place.

On the weekends it can be a nightspot, thats why they have two separate camping grounds. I almost stayed in the single people's campsite, I was glad I didn't. Way too many drunk assholes.

some people i work with finally got me to go to okuma, never again. it seemed like every turn i made i was breaking some rule or someone was being a dumbass. i was sitting on the beach at like 11 pm enjoying the silence when all of a sudden 5, im not kidding, 5 cops came over the hill shining lights in my face asking what i was doing on the beach.....umm sitting? i was then informed i was not allowed on the beach after it got dark. screw okuma!
when i want to get away on the weekend the last place i want to go is another bullshit military establishment.
on a pos note tho, if you want to "feel" like your camping and your looking for the all american getaway then okumas your place and please go, that way all the good spots on okinawa wont be crowded

Wow you can't be on the beach at okuma at night? Shit I love going on the beach at night with my flashlight, looking for kani to catch!
Matter of fact that is what me and my wife were doing once I proposed to her. Sitting on the beach after playing with the kani.

lol yes it was at okuma, but on the beach! Sorry we wanted to go stay up north for a weekend and that was where she wanted to go. We really didn't go to okuma, really just used one of their rooms as a base of operations for a nice sightseeing weekend.

That's funny. Me and some friends were in the water from 3am till 6am. Watched the moon go down and the sun come up. HOwever, everytime we heard the golf cart we would duck down. Of course my friends said I coudlnt hide too much because my blonde hair was really bright from the moons glare but they never came over to us. My other friends said that they were playiing in the ocean the night before and was told to get out. They said they could sit on the beach but couldnt get in the water.

I stayed in the rooms with the small murphy bed. They were alright. They also have the cabins that have a bunk bed and a full size bed. That is all that is in there...lol. Lots of fun though. Especially if you get a lot of friends to rent out the cabins together.

cant sit on the beach at night? **** that, they can keep it, that is BS...I can understand enforcing not letting ppl swim at night, but sitting on the beach? That is pathetic, and i was about to endorse Okuma...hell with that.

The only gripe I have about Okuma is that they allow people to reserve places too far in advance! It is almost impossible to get something within 2 months time because losers who will not even be on leave have reserved everything!

yeah. I can't stand when places do that, specially here because it is so hard to get time off to actually go somewhere for fun. It stinks when it comes time that you are able to do something and then it is like. . . . . hmmmmm man everything is booked. !!! *grrr**

It is really hard to get a nice room up there. It's fun, but not fun enough to plan for it 3 months in advance.
LOL I remember once I proposed to my wife we were chasing kani before we laid down on the beach. After laying their for a while I noticed the kani started to sneak up on us! There are some huge kani on the beach at night!
Oh I think they don't let people on the beach at night to try and keep people from bumping uglies on the beach.

I'm going to okuma next week for 3 days during the week. I called 3.5 weeks ago and got a private room. The lady on the phone said log cabins are always avilable and have a.c. and frigde. Its a family affair though so i hope we don't see to many drunks. Whats a kani ?
Fairlady

You know what though. The log cabins don't look that great. I am not sure I would rent one unless it was absolutely wanted to get out of the house you know.

some of the log cabins are nice, but some are kinda crappy on the inside. The private rooms are decent but you have to call a long time in advance. Oh and the cabins are just about always booked up on the weekend.
Kani is japanese for crab. What you do is go on the beach at night and shine the flash light on them. It stuns them for a second and then you run up to them and step on them. It doesn't hurt them, and then you can pick them up.

yeah I headed out there just the other day to check it out. I thought that the JAL one was the mil. one and was a little dissapointed but I went in the middle of the day so it was not like there was anything going on either.

My family and I have been to Okuma many times thru the years and have always had a good time. We've stayed in the cabins, the cabanas, pitched a tent; we've been on the beach in middle of the night. Don't go up there expecting a 5 star resort. It's a nice place to chill out, have a camp fire (at the cabins or campground). The single areas are just that, single areas. They keep it to that area and that's fine. The bar is a bar....at a military resort you will get predominately guys...especially on the weekend. Went too long here...to me it's a great place. You should go and relax.

Like my husband (justvp) has said we have been to Okuma many times though the years. We have gone as a family on our own and with friends. We have always had a good time. Spring break there with the kids is a lot of fun. Plenty for them to do. We have also been there around halloween. The staff had a lot of things set up that the whole family enjoyed.
Camping is fun especially for a last minute decision to stay. You can bring your own equipment or if you don't have anything; they will set up an entire campsite for you. We also like being able to have campfires.
The cabins are you get what you pay for. They are a step up from camping. They are air conditioned, have a small fridge, and you don't have to sleep on the ground. You can also have campfires. They are a lot of fun if you have other friends stay in neighboring cabins.
The rooms are small and I was disappointed with how they renovated them. They are cramped, but still for the price are still not bad. It would be much more expensive anywhere else for a room on the beach.
If I had to choose the suites would win hands down on the rooms. They are roomy and you can seperate yourself from the kiddies. \:-)
As far as rules.....we have never had a bad experience. We have been out walking on the beach after dark and late numberous times and no problem. My kids like looking for all the crabs too and any other creatures. You have to keep one thing in mind in regards to the rules though....they are made most of the time due to some stupid thing someone has done there before you.
The bar, on the weekends especially, is like any other bar.
Anyway...that is my opinion on Okuma. :D

They look alright. Just nothing to them. Just beds, fridge and air. Thats all.

Nope I just have a different sense of humor. I've never condoned being out right cruel to animals (animal fighting, shooting animals for no reason), but I don't consider sending a cow to slaughter that was breed for slaughter to be cruel. I also don't think animal's have rights in the same sense that people have rights.

I just got back from okuma. I loved the beach and the views. Way to many roaches and bees. All in all i give it a 7.5 out of 10.

I didn't see a single roach or bee once I went.
The wild roaches here are crazy! I've never seen a roach fly until I've seen the wild ones here.

If any body ever gets discouraged because of what they tell you on the phone just go cause about 3 outa 10 people cancel. We got another night and choice of cabana. I heard there was rain here but it was nice all day and only sprinkled at night.

I bet Okuma is booked solid for the upcoming July 4th weekend. Wonder if they ever cracked down on the parties and fighting (and lots of people throwing up all over the place) that used to happen at the campgounds. That was a fun place in the mid/late 90's
