So we're pcsing in a few weeks and I've yet to have a buyer for my car If I don't get a buyer, I know I can junk it, but would I actually make any money doing so?

Can I 'sell' it back to the dealer? I bought it from Pit Stop just under 3 years ago... think they'd buy it back? If they did, would it be for an ok amount?

Do not attempt to sell things on the forums. Please take out a classified ad for such needs.

I think you could find out how much you'd get for junking your car and ask the retailer how much they offer for it. In another thread here, someone mentioned that they'll give x amount per kilo for your car as though you're recycling it, like aluminum cans. :) Then decide which is easier to do... and let us know also. This is a good question for people also PCSing.

Sadly, the bottom fell out of the recycling market. Chances are if you junk it for scrap metal, you may get next to nothing.

For vehicle junking, it went from 60-70 yen per kilo down to around 8 yen/kg.

The trucks that were netting $1000 now go for around $100... and it's still dropping.

yeah, it costs if you take it to a dealer. i'll bet it didn't cost 100 bones if you took it right to the recycle shop...

Actually I took it to a junk yard and at the time 2003(ish) nobody, at least up there made any money off junking cars.

That is because where you took it was looking to just part the car out. The car would sit there until it was gutted and worthless then get scrapped. More recently places were paying for the weight of the vehicle because scrap metal prices were higher and they could make a quick buck off the car without having to part it out first.

Back to square one again, cars will sit in junk yards for a while as parts hogs before they will sold as scrap.

easier to junk it. the scrap yard doesn't get paid to take the car apart to be used for recycling. the want it already cleaned and prepped before they'll accept it. (prior experince may differ than yours)

We took ours to the recycle place down by Kinser. We received 8,000Y for a car that would have normally went for 40,000Y-50,000Y back in July.

Well.. never had to strip a car down. The fixed rate is for a vehicle as is. If you want to strip it down into individual metals (steel, aluminum, etc..) you will get top dollar for each type, and only then does it have to be stripped down.

Rumor is that China is scrapping alot of their Olympic structures, flooding the market with scrap metals. It won't go up again until next year (late in the year) according to my sources at Takunan.

I have Y80,000 worth of aluminum that just became Y25,000 worth. I'll sit on it until it goes up, or I'm starving.

(Sorry.. Muku already addressed the China issue in another post..)

Geez that sucks (about the rate of recycling). I'd heard it had gone down a lot. Oh well. Better just lower the price on the car to get rid of it I guess! :P
