I think it's a great idea. I will bring more busyness to that area and keep some kids off the streets. The only thing I can see why they want to shot this down is becuase it's not an Okinawan company that came up with the idea.:D I guess I should start something I don't really know about (Okinawa VS Mainland) but I don't see why it's a bad thing:confused:?????

I think it's a cool idea too. And it's a heck of a lot better of an idea than yet ANOTHER pachinko parlor.

This would be a good boost to Ginowan City's economy. I think the local residents have a reason to be concerned though. If this were going up in my back yard, I'd be concerned also. Perhaps putting a police box or small station next to the center would help to alleviate possible problems.

Why is it that every time something new or different is being considered for construction use for everyone on Okinawa, the folks against the idea...blame the youth issue of Okinawa, just possible if they had more things and areas to be at...the youth of Okinawa would not be blamed for the proposed expansion of services.

I like the idea, but I really understand why some would be against it. Let's see, it's open until 6am right (strike one), it is a large place that allows a lot of youth to gather at one spot right? (strike two), It will increase congestion in an already congested place right? (strike three)...I could keep going...but these are issues I could see the local residents complaining about.

Agreed, DocP. Ginowan City is already a tightly populated place with a traffic system that leaves a lot to be desired, much like most of the island. Although the center would be an economic boon to the city, it sounds like they'll have to provide some reassurances to sway the area residents.

Well maybe if the jp did something about the boso guys then they wouldn't have a problem. I think it's a joke how a jp handles a boso guy.

Yeah Disney Japan thought is would be a great Idea to build Disney land here back on the early 90's but Okinawa could not make up thier mind as to the location and a few other itmes which made Disney pull out and build it in Tokyo hmmph too bad soo sad.

Holy sh* that would suck to have a disney theme park over here. Golden week is bad enough with all the naicha, I'd hate to imagine the crowd a disney land would bring

I can't imagine how horrifying having a Disneyland on Okinawa would be for the island. :scared: I remember (vaguely) the problems with the Expo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expo_'75) opening up north. We went a year after it opened, and it was still crazy.

A game center isn't even a quarter the size or attraction an expo or other theme park would be though. The city and its residents should really put their heads together to work around possible problems surrounding the new game center.

The kids are going to be out at night regardless of what is or is not built. Maybe this would prove to be beneficial to both the parents and law enforcement by letting them know were the majority of the kids are. If they added security cameras and there were any problems it would be easy to resolve. This could be a positive for the community if it was presented properly. Not to mention it will provide extra jobs.

Once Futenma is gone they are talking about putting a huge casino area. Now is that better or worse???

Ohmigawd, that's absolutely nothing like what the proposal they distributed to the Futenma area residents stated about the use of the land from MCAS Futenma after the reversion. I lived right next to the base and was given a handout that stated they were thinking of turning it into an int'l cultural center. What happened?!

An international casino that is supposed to be sponsored and or invested into by mot only the US but also Australia. I don't think it would be bad as it will bring allot of revenue to Okinawa. The down side is the crack cocaine like addiction to gambling that will take a hold of some people. Ending with the loss of their homes and property although this has already happened with the Pachinko parlors. Last thing I read said it was supposed to employ up to 5,000. I think with anything new especialy on this scale there is bound to be a bad element.

Was there an outcry like this when the Southern Hills Complex was built? Isn't this pretty much the same type of place?

You were here in 1976? Wow, for some reason I didn't imagine you being that old.

Btw Tokyo Disneyland was built in the early 1980's and up and running by 1986. There was never any serious discussion about Disneyland coming here to Okinawa. :)

No it was welcomed with open arms. It is not a magnet for problems either. One benefit of that is it's a bit off the beaten trail so it makes it a bit harder for kids just to walk there.

This new game center for smaller businesses around ginowan is like a walmart moving into the area. I have a karaoke bar a few blocks from the convention center and though it might not be a problem, i could see it causing a dip in business. I think that is what ginowan officials see. Just like pachinko, they will have outside investors, probably from korea that would be linked to Yakuza also. This large game area will more a draw for tourists than locals i'm sure. Everything new in large businesses of entertainment are targeting japanese tourists than the cash deprived locals on Okinawa. Americans are not even in the picture do to the low cost of bowling on base compared to town, unless your thinking about smoking while you bowl or even drinking a beer!!

I believe that is the real issue. All of these "mega" centers etc... are all tourism based.

1. Its all about the money.
2. Whenever someone says its not about the money its really about the money!

sorry I was not clear in 1993 the Oriential Land Company which built Tokyo Disney land made proposals to The Okinawan perfecture to build a Disney Based theme park in Northern Okinawa. My EX-father in Law was at the time Chariman A for the Okinawa City contractors association who was one of many bidders on the proposal, however because of land disputes timelines could not be kept so OLC pulled out.
