Umm. Might want to browse the many threads regarding this subject. There are numerous links to websites, personal testimonies, etc., that you can benefit from. Unless you have some really specific questions, I'm sure most of your concerns have already been answered there.

Just moved here and living off base.... you can work with the agency on the prices! I live less than 5 minutes from the ocean and have a great view. Base housing has some nice stuff and then some horrible houses. We never took an offer, we moved straight offbase.

lol Otis-not sure why I am laughing. It is kinda funny how often these new PCS threads come up. Hey but the ones that really leave me giggling while going WTF? are the ones that look like this:
I need a job. I have a degree in Boxology but still I am having a hard time finding a job here! Any leads? Can you get me a job? I am beyond qualified.

hey umm. cello...
a few of us are still waiting for pics of the thick hipped and tits Latina....
Oh hell no- that ain't happening. I only mentioned that to make the point of why I don't (can't) wear the local threads. I really am shy about my looks. Besides, I go plenty of places both on and off base this little island and I am positive most of you all have seen me already. Besides, I'm a military wife, so I can't be that good looking, right?:scratchchin:

I lived on Camp shields for my first year here and it was horrible!!!
I now live out gate 1 in Mihama in a 3 bedroom apt... and i love it! If you did a poll i would advise you to move off base.

Another thing to consider, that is if you are planning on renting a bigger place, if the housing office does not approve of your new home, the extra money for rent will come out of your pocket. Including utility payments.
I had the opportunity to live on-base as a contractor about 5 years ago. I have local family, so I chose to live off-base. We are living in the exact same apartment we moved out of 5 years ago.
At the same rent level, and we have better neighbors these days. No Americans. Well, perhaps one who likes to sing a lot. But his rent is tied to his girlfriend, and they are pretty quiet around sack-time.
If there are only two of you, why do you need a bigger place?

AMERICANS BONES< AMERICANS! It takes time to get used to not having a shitload of possessions. Took me over 8 years to get used to a smaller pad:crying:

I think the advantages and disadvantages are about 50/50.
On Base = close to work, PX, commissary, military clothing, don't have to pay rent, utilities, spacious living quarters.
Off Base = chance to actually go home to a HOME and get away from the whole military culture, chance to meet other people including locals, retirees and make new friends, experience the culture, get to pick a place that you want and not a carbon copy like on base.
