Well, we are departing in 14 days, so I was just wondering about what we can expect to see on AFN ? And if any of you over there are using the AAFES-dish, what additional channels are you able to receive?
Over here, I like the Sci-Fi Channel, so that's a biggy.
We also like watching Golf, the food network, and a few others.
Spike TV is a good thing.
We'll be living off-base, and we love Japanese TV shows. But sometimes the wife just needs to get her "Tiger Woods" fix.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You don't get a lot of sci-fi stuff on AFN. They have a sports channel, movie channel, and news channel. They have two prime time channels, which play the most popular shows from the US...usually shows from ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and maybe a few other lesser known networks. Then they have a spectrum channel which plays stuff from comedy network, spike TV and such.
If you want Sci-fi channel, history channel, discovery, etc...I suggest getting skyperfect. But...skyperfect only changes programming monthly (I think)...there are a lot of reruns on there!
Didn't you have OCN before?

You can get program guides from myafn.net. (Unless you are blocked like I am)
I've pretty much given up on any TV and only watch rented movies now. Just not worth the reruns, lame shows, etc.
If you care about better programing, go with the OCN or Sky Perfect. AFN will assimulate you into a mindless blob while you melt into the couch.
I love my skyperfect. :thumbup1:

AFN satellite has very limited programming compared to on-base cable. Sky Perfect has more channels available. We get our Sci-Fi fix online. heee. :D

ehh...only 14 channels. I started watching shows that I wasnt interested in in the states but realized I liked them. So no biggie to me really with how many channels there are or arent. I am just glad they have a cartoon channel.

cable here sucks imo, it should be free for the quality of signal and the program selection they offer.

AGREES!!!!
I accidently forgot about the bill the other day. They called my house telling me to pay or they will shut the services off. I was thinking they should credit me for all the days I didnt have cable. Seems like daily it flickers on and off. I cant depend on it fully for internet either and I do school online. I got soooo spoiled with fiberoptic off base and then moved on base to this slow shit.

The only thing I dislike about skyperfect, well, two things. There is a lot of repeating programming...especially on discovery channel and history channel. The other thing is the NFL package plays a day late....meaning the games have already been completed before they air!

Yes, we used to have OCN, but only for my internet cable connection. For TV, we just used the antenna on the roof. I used to buy a lot of dvd's for watching movies, as dk can attest to. :D
Looking forward to the new HD/TV that we're going to buy, and probably a Blue Ray player, maybe a nice surround speaker set up. :w00t:
Anyway, I appreciate your input. It's been almost four years since we've left, and there have been a lot of changes over there.

My thanks go out to all of you who had responded. :D
I've never been a big fan of AFN, no matter which part of the world I was stationed at. The commercials used to drive me nuts.
The three shows that I absolutely have to watch over here, and they are all on the Sci-Fi Channel:
1. Battlestar Galactica
2. Eureka
3. The Dresden Files
I would imagine that all of you are still able to watch the Today Show, and occasionally CNN?
But at least you've painted a pretty clear picture of what we can expect to watch upon our return. :D

do yourself a favor and dont even get TV. YOUR LIVING ON A TROPICAL ISLAND!!! we have not had tv for 3 years now. if we really feel the need to watch something we just rent it and that doesnt happen very often.

Once you've been here as long as us, even Okinawa does become boring. TV comes in handy when you've already been just about everywhere and you just want to kick up your feet and not think.
In an ideal world, we'd all be reading books anyway. Not watching tv. :p

You are lucky they called. :) I have known several people that forgot and the services just got shut off and they had a heck of a time getting it back on. I haven't actually gotten a bill from Mediatti for months. They said they were switching to email billing and it seemed if you didn't go into their office to sign up for it; you just didn't get a bill! I went in and signed up and received one bill via email and have not received one since. I know that is why a couple of my neighbors had their service cut at one time or another. They have to have a bill as a reminder and if not well...
yeah cable here stinks!!
That about sums it up.

1. Battlestar Galactica
2. Eureka
3. The Dresden Files
1. BSG doesn't start a new season until September stateside, as far as we've heard.
2. Eureka is about five or six episodes in already. You can find them online, if you don't have base cable.
3. Dresden Files hasn't shown up on the radar yet. We're still checking every week though. I hope they didn't cancel it.
Those are also some of our favorite shows.

Slingbox is a good idea if you have family stateside...I've thought of that, and I have friends who do it...but it is illegal and I'm not about breaking the law just for some TV shows.

Why do you say its illegal? I use it all the time when I travel. Our son has watched shows the whole time we have been here in Okinawa.

It is legal if you have it connected to your cable that you are paying for, and you use it while traveling. It is illegal if you connect it to friends or families cable and watch it while you are stationed overseas.

Oh yes, huge difference. I could see how not many people who are stationes here also have a empty personal residence in the US paying for cable and slinging.
In any case it works great except it takes control of the tv back home. Not an issue when we are all together but when I'am on the rode, 8-16 days a month at the least, it was an issue. We just connected it to our daughters tv since she never uses it. That way the living room and other bedroom are free.

oh...so when you change the channel here it changes there as well? Can't use a splitter or something? I didn't realize that.

No way that I have found. I have been all over the slingbox user forums too. It uses an IR blaster connected to the back of the slingbox and you place that over the IR sensor on the box.
With the Slingbox Pro you can control different sources. I have the cable box, Sat TV (only TV Japan) and the DVD plaver. Of course I only use the cable box.
I was gone most of July and don't remember connecting once. Too tired when I got back plus I still have the hotels TV. I really only use it for sports and since the White Sox are done so am I.
It is a cool device however and like I said our son watches Thomas using Comcast OnDemand all the time while the wife watches the TV in the room every night since we have been here.

gtg=good to go?
I am a fool, and tired. You could use the supplied splitter and split to your slingbox and tv. Then you watch without changing the channel useing the slingbox as a tuner BUT you are limited to the coax connection and what that brings.
Using the cable box get the DVR functions, all channels and On Demand Video services. Just like having the box in the hotel, overseas etc..

3. The Dresden Files
My husband found this online at some fan site: :crying:
The Sci Fi Channel announced on August 3, 2007 that The Dresden Files would not be renewed for a second season.
We're bummed, because we really liked the show. I'll probably write into Sci-Fi channel requesting it be picked up again. It worked for Eureka, when Sc-Fi did the same thing.
