View Full Version : What's the deal with the thanks button?
Ok sure I know, it says what it means. However I would like someone to explain this one to me please. On the profile of an individual user there is a box about "thanked" posts.
Now one says thanked in 3 posts, but when I try to find the posts that were "thanked" for nothing shows up.
THe other one says total thanks zero but thanked 5 times.....
Hit the link to find all said posts and wala they pop up just fine.
Can anyone explain this? Oh and is this the goal of using this "thanks" function? http://www.justhungry.com/files/images/gomasuri1.jpg

It's just an add on to let you thank users for helpful posts. It's not a reputation system, so it doesn't take you to the post itself. This is something that dk added yesterday and we are evaluating.

I noticed it yesterday.

Yes, I know your profile will take you to them, but the individual posts will not link you to them. One like shows how many "thanks" you have given out and the next line shows how many you have received.

Maybe I am missing something here but here is the link to your "thanked" posts.
Doctor P's Thanked posts. (http://www.japanupdate.com/forum/search.php?searchid=6363)
Unless you are refering to the "thanks" that the poster gave out. Is it possible to include a link to the posts that a person gave "thanks" to?
Sorry for the late edit.
This is just a simple way for people to say thanks for a helpful post without having to type a PC+1 simple one-liner. I still haven't decided if I like the idea or not, but I'm leaning more towards liking it than not. I do want to fix that dang icon though. Ugly as sin.

In my opinion it just ends up turning things into a popularity contest.
It's a risk. We'll see if it's abused. If it goes bad, it won't be hard to take off. Not the end of the world.

That's true, might I suggest a sticky here or put it into the FAQ's to explain the purpose of it.
Oh and I agree the button looks rather lame:thumbdown:
This can be that sticky. I'll leave it up for a few weeks. We're getting a little overloaded on stickies in this category...
One problem here, I hit the thanks button to give a member thanks and it posted twice, I attempted to remove one of the thanks but received the error message that I do not have access to that capability.
If you are going to leave the "Remove Thanks" from the post option I might suggest letting people have access to do so if they want, otherwise please remove that option from the board. Thank you.

How do you view it now?
Personally I have and will continue to use it not only for "helpful" posts but for "atta boy's" or "atta girls" seeing as how there is no other method without having to write a response, which in some cases I personally do not want to do for a number of reasons.
Which may not be what the intent was, but the definition of "helpful" is so broad:-| :D
dk.....looks like this Thanks button thing is being brought into discussions and being used by certain members here to critisize and complain about it's usage.
What are your thoughts about this function now?
Personally I like seeing it as it is being used now. Sure it isnt that big of a deal, but I personally dont see the point of people using the passing around of thanks, as another reason to start flamebaiting or making harrassing comments.
I like it. I see no problem with it. At least I didn't install the "rate down" button instead.

That sounds like a good idea when you first look at it, but do you really want to be spanking any of the guys on here.
I'm not that keen on spanking any girls:w00t:

Now I feel really paranoid. Not only does Chat stop when I come on, but not one single soul has mentioned the thanks button to me, let alone explained to me how I can use it to start a war with anyone.
How come I'm always left out?:crying:

helpful
adjective, cooperative, accommodating, kind, caring, friendly, neighbourly, sympathetic, supportive, benevolent, considerate, beneficent
Apparently not that broad a meaning

If there was a F**k you button, I could understand someone finding it insulting, or whatever.
What I find hard to believe, is that there is a real conversation taking place about a "Thanks" button.
Thanks buttons don't bite, nor is there any record of a thanks button actually causing any person physical damage.
Not only does it sound and look silly, but I'm a stupid arse for responding to such a childish thread:rolleyes:

I like the "Thanks Button". It allows me to really irritate people that I dislike, without actually having to explain myself. When I push that button, I normally do that because I agree with that posters opinion. And I don't have to worry about wasting my valuable time "looking for a Google link".
People are set in their ways. The ones I do disagree with, usually got their opinions from the same post that I would use as a rebuttal. They just twist the meaning of the words to suit their needs, or to fit in with the crowd. So, what's the point?
Having worn some uniforms myself, I tend to side with like-minded people who have worn the uniform. I have no respect for people who criticize what I have ever done, without ever having worn one themselves. But I can respect inter-service rivalries in jest. It's a given, so.....
Also, I have no respect for anyone who has run away from his/her job, while serving in the military.
I have read lines from people who claim that their recruiter is to blame. I tend to think of it as people being too stupid to understand the contract that they have signed, or properly understanding the vow's that they've made, prior to their enlistment.
There are people who do not agree with my line of thinking for various reasons, and they are welcome to their opinions. It's kind of hard for me to accept criticism from people who have never worn the uniform, who are sponging off of us. Yet, that too is a reality.
If you doubt this, look at all of the postings within this (or other) threads that were made on government computers, during normal working hours.
If you really would like to test that, approach your IT staff, and have them run an audit on your account.
