Well I couldn't care any less about the politics of Alaska. Its an absolutely beautiful place to live. Thus the reason I shared the pictures.

went to alaska for military training during the summer....the sun was up for almost 24 hours...but was still cold...for me that is...the glaciers were awesome...the highways were endless..and had little traffic..perfect for a harley or civic....the mountains were everywhere and the sky was blue....just like in okinawa..(talking about the skies..that is).. and it was wild....saw moose, just walking around..and saw a little bear cub running across the road...kind of scary..because i did not see the mama..and was on foot...and also saw a human animal four wheeling in a jeep and almost kill himself, trying to go over a almost vertical wall of dirt......go to alaska..it is a great place....it is part of the great usa like hawaii is......full of diversity...gotta luv it.....

fyi...heard a saying for the single women...if you want to get married go to alaska...."the odds are good...but the goods are also odd".:)

I loved Alaska each time I visited. I've actually considered taking a job up there, so many things to do, and an absolutely lovely view everywhere you look. *added benefit...you don't sweat your ass off at 5am like you do here!*

Stephie.... you are making me lean towards my husbands view of Alaska: "It's a great place to live and die since most the sights leave you breathless."

My only fear is he'll get stationed in Alaska right after we have been here for 3 (hopefully more) years. We'll look like a Micheline-man family wrapped up in parkas down to our feet.

Beautiful place, wouldn't want to live there though. A little too cold for me, I'm pampered by okinawan weather.

I absolutely LOVE the weather here. Trail, we moved here from Missouri and I was used to tripple digit weather int he summer. Here the summer high is in the low 70s....if your lucky. This year it only got to 70 TWICE this summer.

We lost our orders to Japan so ill never know the weather there but the good part is that we get to stay here a little longer. I will have one last white christmas and get to play in the snow (if I dont have the back surgery that is....)

I'd love for the hubby to retire here and get a job on the slope or something, but he isnt a fan of the cold.

Sorry but "seventies twice" in a summer doesn't sound good to me. I also enjoy a winter that I can still wear shorts during the day:thumbup:

LOL well this year we had an unusually cold summer, but I can honestly say HERE at 65 youd be sweating. I start burning up at about 45.

I went TDY to Alaska a few years ago, and it was a culture shock for me. I hadn't left Okinawa in about 11 years at the time. It was nice to walk into a bar, and blend in with the other big burly guys. The Alaskan Bush Company was a nice retreat from the places over here as well. :thumbup1:

I was there in April, and it was nearly 80 degrees the entire time I was there.

I love the cold, and Okinawa seems to be getting hotter every year. Maybe I should drop some weight!

You are insane, woman!!! :scared: At 65F, I'm in an overcoat and thermal underwear and stuff. LOL :p I'd like to visit there once in my life though.

Ill ignore PimpJuice's negativity...

Socal, LOL not I am not insane. I am just used to the weather here. At 15 to 30 deg if the wind isnt blowing you can get away with just a light coat. Below 15 it gets a bit cold, but then again your talking to someone who wore shorts in 10 degree weather. You do get used to it.
The wildlife is awesome too. We have had moose looking in our windows, eating our trees in the front yard. Heck on main street down town you have to yield to the moose. We seen a black bear not even a mile from the house, red fox running across the roads. Its absolutely amazing and those pictures prove it.

Too cold and too expensive for me. I know a lot of people from all over Alaska. Can't beat the scenery, but there are places where those who don't get along with others go.

Few incomes outside of the Government jobs sustain a decent lifestyle there. When you get off the Gov's tit, life there gets a bit more rustic.

SE Alaska however has always appealed to me. Gentler climate, and with the fishing industry all but dead, costs are down.

PJ...I was referring to the blatant attempt at inserting politics into a thread meant to share some pictures....it is after all the PHOTOGRAPHY part of the forum. If I wanted to talk politics, I would go elsewhere to do it.

I dont expect everyone to enjoy cold weather, some people cant handle it. Truly cold was when we were driving up here and it was negative 36 (thank goodness our heater worked like a charm, others wernt so lucky...) Ive been to Colorado, it is absolutely stunning there. The view from atop Pikes Peak was amazing.

No need to slide down mountains. Although I love it here, I have no desire to make an attempt at a Bono moment...

ANYHOW....

Hope the rest of you enjoyed the pictures. It is, after all, in the photography section.

Scenic photographs...that's all it is. Nothing about any people or how cold the weather can be. Just simple photographs of why -I- think Alaska is awesome.

Disagree with me all you want...doesn't really bother me much.

Steph, I always liked the pictures of the Aurora Borealis. Did you ever take pictures of that? That'd be cool to see.

Socal..No unfortunately here in Anchorage we rarely get good Auroras. Totally sucks. Ive seen them here and attempted to take pictures but its just not bright enough to shine through the city lights or the neighbors lights. I end up with very dark pictures with nothing in them lol.

My brother's in AK (Kodiak) I have some awesome pics from him I'll try to post later.

He's on a deployment in the Bering Sea right now, I wonder if he had a hand in saving those people in that fishing boat that sank yesterday.

I think the way Steph feels about the weather there (sweating in the 40's) is probably the same reason those of us that have been here in Okinawa long enough bundle up when it hits 60.
