Does anyone know what the going rate is for a mamasan to clean house? Currently been using On-time but just cleaning the floors and bathrom costs me $67.00. Someone told me they charge the going rate, but what is the going rate? Does anyone recommend someone?

Funny you brought up On-Time, I actually worked and was friends with the owner before he got out of the military. Provided he is still the owner and hasn't sold the company.

I was thinking about hiring a "mama-san" twice a month as well! The last time we had one, it cost 5,000 yen a month. Then again, that was more than 25 years ago. heh, gomen. From what I've heard, it costs about that per visit now.

Really?! :scared: Wow, then $67 is probably closer to the norm. Wow, it got expensive.

If you're military, I heard one of the military thingies do it also. I don't recall right now which one. I have to wait to hear the ad again.

$67.00 is per visit and that is only mopping kitchen and diingroom floor, cleaning bathroom downstairs (no shower), and cleaning upstairs bathroom with shower. First they were going to charge me 92.00 each visit for cleaning whole house!

I am not suppose to be around chemicals thats why I need someone to mop floors and bathroom. Its a medical issue.

I also tried on-time yard service which cost me $35.00. I need to find someone for that too, that is dependable. My husband's sqdrn isn't dependable, last time when he was deployed no one ever came to mow the yard when they kept telling me someone would. Never happend, I got so many warnings and still nothing from the sqdrn...

For 5000 yen what do they do?

I dunno exactly, had friends that had the services in Oki.
Yard mowing is a joke there!!! I had people wanting to charge me $35 for a yard the size of a darn peanut!!!
Seriously, it took 5 minutes each for front and back....MAYBE 8 even though they had hills. And people would come around soliciting business and it was like- no way!!! You have to be outta your mind!

I have a 2300 sq ft house & the lady here in states charged me $50 each visit to do 3 bathrooms, kitchen and all the floors (as well as under stove, behind frigde an that kind of cleaning stuff one time a month when she was here) I kept her on about 6mths.

$35.00 is spendy for a small yard to mow..last month we went back to the states and I couldn't find anyone to mow the yard, on-time was the only place that could do it. No one wanted my money!!

I need to find a mamasan or keep on-time for my cleaning. And keep on-time for mowing...this is a sad place!!

I'm pregnant and getting more obviously pregnant every week. I can't do all that cleaning. I think those women who can do it are awesome. I can't even open the trash can or walk by dirty dishes in the sink without narfing. :barf: The thing is, we don't want to spend a lot of money for cleaning. sigh. Any info you get, please post it. Thanks!

A friend of mine had a mamasan that came in once a week and it cost her
6,000 yen per week. The mamasan did all the laundry, ironing, mopping, vaccuming, bathroom with tub and bathroom with shower. She also washed any dishes, cleaned the kitchen and dusting. She was there the greater part of the day that she came. My friend found her mamasan through a friend that was already using her. My friend just took what day she had available in the week. I have seen people put ads in the JU for mamasans. I don't know what the sucess rate is for that.

A lot of the yard services have a set minimum rate that they charge even for the smallest yards. In my neigborhood there is always some kid going around with a mower and they usually charge around $15. I have a neighbor with a pretty good sized yard that the kids have even mowed her yard for that. I personally love to see a kid out trying to make their own money whether it be mowing yards, lemonade stand, washing cars, etc.

I have noticed coldnoodles that you seem to have the worst of luck with many things not in just this thread but others you have posted. Hopefully that will change for you.:)

worst of luck is with my husband's sqdrn! His sqdrn is a joke, when he was deployed last time here they all said if you need help or need anything - even if it was a dumb question just call a RAV. Someone from the sqdrn was suppose to mow the yard - never happend. So this time around I am making sure I don't have to call anyone especially w/a dumb question, cuz all they do is gossip and talk shnit about everything, then that goes to the 1st shirt then its living hell! I have learned my lesson - never to call anyone when spouse is deployed!

I wouldn't mind paying 6,000 a wk for all that!!

I had an ad posted last time my husband was deployed but most replies were filipina mamasan's when my ad said looking for Japanese mamasan, the filipina's wanted between 75.00 - 80.00 per visit. I was looking for a japanese mamasan never got a response.

Coldnoodles, where do you live? I've been thinking about doing some sidework to earn a little extra money...I don't mind grass cutting and a little cleaning (as long as there's no dishes involved...I make my hubby do our dishes I hate them so much).

Do you have a mower/weedeater?
Based on the cleaning that on-time does (I work at Outdoor Rec so we have their kiosk in our building) for you already...I would mow your yard for $25 if you have a mower, and $30 if I had to bring one. I would do your mopping and clean your bathrooms for $50.

Hey, maybe if I can get enough of you forumers interested, I can quit my crappy desk job at Outdoor Rec! (I much prefer to get paid for doing physical work, not staring at a computer screen)

Sorry - found someone to mow yard for $15.00 and currently have Japanese mamasan mopping - kitchen, laundry, dining room, stairs, and hallway; and cleaning 1 1/2 bathrooms and kitchen for 3000 yen per visit.

Hey, I have a question here, not really about all this stuff, all just amazing to me, that you guys have someone to clean your house. I guess if you are working all hours and doing shift work and all that I can understand.

When you say a 1/2 bathroom, what do you mean? I once found it in an textbook I was using with my students and couldn't explain it. We just don't have such a thing in Britain.

In America a full bathroom has a toilet, sink and bath or shower. A 1/2 bathroom is only a toilet and sink.

Ah, so we would just call a 1/2 bathroom a toilet! But come to think of it we don't normally have a sink in the toilet..if it is separate from the bathroom.
But that is not very common I think, unless you are rich and have a large house!

It's a long way from Okinawa to San Antonio though.....

In case anyone close to Naha is needing cleaning, the Chinese students at my school are always looking for work. I've been having them clean weekly for a while now. They are delighted with 8-900 yen an hour.
