I finally decided to register after lurking on these forums for quite awhile. My husband is in the Marine Corps and I have two kids..boy age 13 and girl age 10. We have been on Okinawa for nine years. I have really enjoyed reading everyone's posts and look forward to adding my own two cents as well.:)

Welcome! 9 years total or all in one stretch?

Almost in one stretch.....Hubby originally got here towards the end of 1998. The kids and I arrived in February of 1999. We were here until 2001 and then PCS'd to the states where hubby went to a school. He finished that in April of 2002. We had two choices of where to go...California or Okinawa. We chose Okinawa but didn't think they would send us back but they DID! We have been here ever since. We do love it though and it has been a great place to raise our kids. We will more than likely leave next summer. We have been holding out for the east coast. All our family is on that side. So far we have only been on the west coast and here.

Cool...I have one friend who did a 10 year stretch here until he had to go back, and another who did 17 here! I always envied them both for that. I was lucky if I stayed in one place for 2 years while I was active duty!

It has so far been very easy to stay here. Just seems like people we have come across don't want to come here. They just don't know what they are missing. I am pretty confident we could continue to stay here. We are missing family though. We want our kids to have more time with their family in the states while they are still kids. Although if given California as our only option...just might have to stay!

Oh easily forgotten story of my life , ha, ha. I am from Fountaintown. It is about 30 minutes east of Indianapolis. New Palestine, Greenfield, Shelbyville, Morristown are some of the towns that surround it that you might recognize.

nope the only one I recognize is Indianapolis. I'm from Hammond indiana! It's right between the south side of chicago and gary indiana. Yes I am aware that I live the the most polluted part of the state! Not to mention I live smack dab between two ghettos.

Too funny. Always think Michael Jackson when Gary is mentioned.

On the lines of pollution.....My brother worked and went to school in Terre Haute at one time plus I have driven through there quite a few. Always have to hold your nose going through. Don't know what they got going on there, but it is stinky. Where I lived the most you dealt with were the farm smells. MMMMM, ha, ha.:barf:

Ha thats nothing! Try driving through whiting indiana. Not only is inland steel next door to it in hammond, a large part of the town is a BP oil refinery. Gotta love the smell of an oil refinery. not to mention all the smaller factories here an there.

Michael Jackson used to preform at a nearby church. It was once the jackson 5 was just starting out. He also promised to build a performing arts center in gary, but he still hasn't built it.
