If there are any photography buffs out there & you're still on Okinawa, I highly recommend this book. If you are having a wonderful time on the island & know you're going to miss it, I highly recommend this book. I brought two of them back with me. It is a lovely hardback coffee table book with about 250 pages of full color photos from around the island. There are also great descriptions of the culture, history & the people of Okinawa. The book can be found at any BX/PX.

I was talking with my husband the other day about buying this book for his folks. They've never been here, and his dad isn't much of a traveller. We keep meaning to get out and take our own pictures, but eh. You think this would make a good gift for my in-laws? I've never even looked through it, but the cover is nice. heh.

They are great momentos. I am back stateside & have been trying to get yet another copy for a friend of mine here. Okinawa is the ONLY place you can get these books right now. It is published through Marine Corp Community Services & they do not have immediate plans on making it available elswhere anytime soon. I purchased one for myself & one for my folks. I had to lug those things all the way home:cursing:
If your in-laws are anything like my parents, they would love to read all about the foreign land their son lived on.

The Best of Okinawa Living:first:
The Best of Okinawa Living is a 300+ page pictorial compilation brought to you by the award-winning staff of Okinawa Living magazine that will introduce readers to the miraculous islands of Japan’s southernmost Prefecture.
The Brief History of Okinawa touches on the islands gusuku, or castles, and chronicles a few historical highlights. The Places chapter takes readers on a virtual tour of southern, central, and northern Okinawa as well as surrounding isles and islets. Okinawan Icons, which personify the region, the prefectures people, and many aspects of the islands unique culture, cover various subjects that represent the Ryukyu Islands.
Holidays, special occasions, and festivals are a vital part of Okinawan and Japanese culture. Celebrations highlights Okinawan Matsuri, or seasonal festivals, including the Naha Great Tug-of-War (a contest using the largest rope made of natural materials in the world), and the islands distinctive Dragon Boat Races.
The Ryukyu Archipelago is well known for its natural beauty. The Nature section takes readers on a brief sightseeing expedition to Okinawa’s quickly-disappearing northern forests called Yanbaru, the islands many caves (including the massive grotto known as Gyokusendo), the prefectures many beautiful beaches and more.
Traditional Okinawan cuisine has recently received praise and notoriety among the health conscious. The chapter sheds light on the miraculous Food and Drink of the islands.
The archipelago’s greatest treasures are the people that live in this sub-tropical paradise. The People of Okinawa chapter shows a day in the life of a few Okinawans- their trades, philosophies, and thoughts.
The Best of Okinawa Living is available at select AAFES BookMark locations for $34.95 making it the gift of choice for everyone or family members back home.

I'll probably end up moving back here after I get out of the military. It would be easier on my wife and I love it here. That is if I can find a decent job!

Easy, just follow these steps:
1. Volunteer to serve in Thailand, in 1974-75. Wait for the base closure,
they'll send you over here to finish up your isolated tour.
2. Get stationed to Langley A.F.B, wait about a year, and threaten the slug
in Outbound Assignments with bodily harm, if he can't get you orders to
Bitburg A.B., Germany.
3. After leaving the service, join up with a major contractor and volunteer to
come over here, and get paid a lot of money.
4. Leave Okinawa, pay for the plane tickets out of your own pocket, and
you're back on Okinawa.
That's what I did, and it seems to have worked for me. :D
Fourth times' the charm, and I ain't leaving. :old:
Hope that helped.

How I did it:
- My mother still lives here.
- Married someone in the military.
How my husband did it:
- Stayed in the military.

I'd ship it.
How much would shipping be for that, anyway? I'd love to send a copy to my in-laws - they're avid divers and I'm sure they'd appreciate it.
I ended up here twice out of luck. First time, stepdad was a civilian contractor. Then I married a Marine, even though I was raised to believe they're evil ;).
