I took this statement from the following add on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/COW-2RABB-Hippo-IVORY-TUSK-Free-wood-standFREE-SHIPPING_W0QQitemZ140264770545QQihZ004QQcategoryZ2 9445QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
The add states:
" Hippo ivory comes from the hippotomus which lives in riverbeds and they hit their tusks on the banks. They break off and float to the top and are picked up like shells on the beach. The hippo grows new ones---no animal is killed for these tusks. You will notice on okimono and netsuke that are made of hippo ivory that there is a line--This is NOT a crack "
I have never known hippo tusks to "float." They are actually quite solid and heavy (not that I deal in ivory - but I was a hippo keeper for 5 years - I know what their teeth are like first hand). Hippos don't hit their tusks on the banks - maybe they could chip or loose a tooth in a fight with another hippo. But I really find this explanation of how they got the ivory very fishy.
Is it just me or does this annoy anyone else??? I don't know what to think of this.
