Okay, my better half, no we are not married, is being transfered to island. I'm coming with. Do i have to have a "special"visa? is there anything preventing me from finding a job while there? Is it against visa rules? and if i am lucky enough to find a job with SOFA status? is there anything preventing me from just coming over and finding a job other than the obvious lack of them?

Ahem...Be prepared for bombardment!!
From what I know!!
You are coming on a tourist Visa. U can stay 60/90 days, then must leave, unless you get a sofa job (very unlikely).
You can not LEGALLY work in local economy without A japanese work permit/visa.
People will give even more/contradicting info I'm sure!

yes, I understand the posts i have read about the apparent lack of jobs, I understand the tourist visa since i will not be on her orders as SOFA. and i understand i cannot work on the local economy...BUT, if i land a job on a Base/camp whatever with SOFA status...I'm cool?

If they really need someone fast, and can get all the paper work done fast, I suppose it could be possible. But some local hire contractor positions like you to at least have an Okinawan Spouse, or some other reason that you can stay here rather than a tourist/student visa

Yep... If you are lucky enough!!! It aint that easy and there are LOTS of people well more "connected" than you may be when you get here all in the same boat.
Good luck!!

In other words... "local hire"

First, if she is military, what rank? If not, what is her job?
Avenues of attack are largely based on who you are, and what you do.
We had a Dodds teacher awhile back claim her 31 year old son as a dependant, so he could stay in Okinawa. Our HR said no, but after actually reading the rules, age wasn't an issue..only that she is paying for the majority of his care.

or you could take the easiest, and most obvious way and just get married on paper, get on her orders, and actually make enough money so that while you are looking for a job you don't have to skrimp and struggle. i know, many people rail against the outdated and archaic establishment that is marriage, but jeez, why go through the headache when you've got something that is so darn simple smacking you in the face? not to mention that you may get, i think it's called spouse preference or something? think about it. orders only take a day or 2 to get changed if you hustle.

And people wonder why divorce rates are so high!!!

which is gonna bring a higher level of stress? being married and not having to worry about how your gonna pay your bills, or hustling to get a job because if you don't, bills aint gonna get paid, and you will be forced to leave...
divorce rates are skyrocketing because people are becoming ever more lazy and instead of talking, and actually working problems out, they take the easy way out and just get a divorce.

we've been together for 7 years now and love each other dearly. We've done the marriage thing before, not to each other. Just want to know if I found a job on base, since that is not on the local economy, would that negate the visa status if job carried SOFA status.
