What do you think about "I kissed a girl?" Is it too risque to be played on AFN?

I really don't like the song. But I don't think it's risque at all and should stay on AFN with the rest of the music I don't like. So what she kissed a girl and liked it, who gives flying ******. Girls kiss girls all the time! If we ban it from AFN pretty soon I won't be able to even buy a maxim and cough medicine from the bx:rolleyes:.

I don't think it's too risque for the AFN audience. It's annoyingly repeatitive though, isn't it? The singer girl reminds me of that actress in that one movie about computers... or something. It's like every other chic song out there. eh.

It seems her mom has a feeling about it. She has a job on my next Thailand debacle if she needs pointers from some real experts in the field!:first:

But the most surprising criticism allegedly came from the singer's mom, evangelical Christian preacher Mary Hudson, who reportedly told British tabloid The Daily Mail that she dislikes the song and feels that it is "shameful and disgusting."

The paper quoted Hudson as saying, "Katy knows how I feel. We are a very outspoken family, and she knows how disappointed her father and I are. I can't even listen to that song. The first time I heard it I was in total shock. When it comes on the radio, I bow my head and pray."

Oh...one option left out is "It sucks...period".

I heard someone complaining about the song the other day on the radio...they were saying they didn't want their kids listening to that. Why can't people just play a cd instead of listening to AFN, or explain to their kids what the song is talking about? Maybe it's good that it's starting that sort of conversation in households. People are way too uptight about music.

I think it promotes and encourages homosexual behavior amongst our female military members. As you know, it is detrimental to the good order and discipline that has always been the hallmark of our fine American armed forces. This song is no more acceptable than a song about man-on-man buttsecks.

As mayor, I will work with community leaders to ensure songs like this are not broadcast to our military members, families, and our host nation listeners. These types of messages- that homosexual and bisexual behavior is not only exciting, stimulating, and acceptable- serve to undermine our role as ambassadors for the United States and reflects poorly upon us all.

That is all.

Mayor, Sir, if they had to censor that song, where would it stop? I mean there are plenty of songs from what I can only assume is your generation :old: (and not mine) that would be deemed inappropriate, as well. I just wonder sometimes about how they make the decisions about which songs go too far, and which ones don't. There must be a go/no go book at AFN somewhere.

At best I was hoping it could encourage some healthy bi-sexual behaviour, especially for the young men who may have the honor of living with some these females in the barracks/ dorms. The sexual opportunities could be expanded for some enterprising young men.

ITA Zeldan. I don't care if someone's straight, gay or into "plushies" but chicks who "act" bi to get attention are laaaaaame.

2 attention whores + a camera = fakey fake lesbo shot.

FYI... It's just a song.... I don't take any of this crap to heart. Just because I hear a song, I am not gonna run out and start kissing girls. I tell my kids the same thing, a song is just that, nothing more. If you get your panties in a bunch over a song, you really have nothing better to do in life. If you don't want to hear a particular song, use that wonderful 'off' button. They make those, ya know. People get waayy to uptight about silly stuff and not about the stuff that really matters. i think we're so caught up in a society that's so obessed with sexual orientation. Some people don't give a rat's ass about while christian people are up in arms about it because it's a sexual sin in the bible and anything that promotes such behavior should be, how should I say, discouraged. But people have the power of free will to make their own choices in life. Whichever way you choose; whether right or wrong, God knows all of our intentions anyways. He will choose in the end anyways, Our lives are predestined. Heaven or Hell. I say go with the flow and leave the rest to God to figure out the mess. That's his job.

I haven't listened to AFN in years. I don't know this song. I have CD's and an iPod. Call me crazy. If I want to hear propaganda, I can sit through millions of AFN TV commercials telling the military how great they are, but not to beat their wives or kids, not to drink, smoke, or gamble, not to sexually do anything to anyone, to drive safely, not to kill themselves, (let the President do it for you) and to eat healthy food, though one is hard-pressed to grab a quick bite of healthy food anywhere but at the commissary deli-counter.

I digress. I can't take any broadcast here seriously, nor do I want to listen to Top 40 crap aimed at the 18-24 year old audience.

I do like Leona Lewis though. I think she's got an awesome voice and since I don't listen to AFN, it (Bleeding Love) hasn't got played out for me yet. I heard soem new one of hers the other day also that was pretty good.

It really isin't that original really. It's your standard ABABC form in something major with the standard 4 beat measure. The lyrics are what have made the song noteable and it's only because this genre of pop is aimed at tweens that has made it controversial. It is too bad AFN doesn't have a program director that is willing to play something really risky, as in more indie and not just mainstream stuff.

Who’s Who of AFN in the Pacific (http://www.stripes.com/article.asp?article=58238)
How does AFN make its musical selections? (http://www.stripes.com/article.asp?article=58251)

"I kissed a girl and I liked it / the taste of her cherry ChapStick / I kissed a girl just to try it / I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it."
The lyrics to Katy Perry’s "I Kissed a Girl" can be heard on American Forces Network radio stations across Pacific bases. And for some, the lesbian reference is offensive.
"Every three to four months, a new song pops up that is popular in the States that we will play [and it] will offend certain people," said Gunnery Sgt. Jimmy Stare, acting station manager for AFN Okinawa.
Sometimes it’s parents complaining about songs with sexual innuendo or curse words, Stare said. Other times, he said, people simply say a particular song isn’t appropriate for a military radio station.
For others, it’s not a particular song, just the general music selection.
That’s why Air Force Staff Sgt. Samantha Smothers listens to CDs instead of the Wave, AFN Okinawa’s radio station. "Mostly it plays just a lot of music that I don’t listen to," said Smothers, who prefers hard rock.
In some locations, complaints are few and far between.
Using the music provided by the American Forces Radio and Television Service, AFN Korea has not received a complaint about music in more than a year, said AFN Korea commander Lt. Col. Michael T. Lawhorn.
Public complaints about inappropriate music are rare at Iwakuni Marine Corps Air Station, too, said Staff Sgt. Dustin Dunk, radio programming director at the base AFN station.
When complaints do roll in, Dunk and Stare said, they explain their station’s policy and how AFN affiliates acquire music from AFRTS (see related story).
AFN’s mission is to inform and entertain, Stare said. The way to reach its target audience of 18- to 24-year-old servicemembers is through current music that’s hot on the charts, he said.
And once music has been approved by AFRTS, it isn’t his policy to censor that music, Stare said, explaining why the Katy Perry song continues to run on his station.
"If I censored that song, then I would have to censor many other songs," Stare explained in a written response to complaints about the song. "For example, Little Wayne’s hit ‘Lollipop’ is a thinly veiled reference to oral sex. Mariah Carey’s last hit ‘Touch my Body’ was extremely blatant in its content. The Rolling Stones classic hit ‘Brown Sugar’ references slavery."
But not all AFN stations follow that way of thinking.
AFN Misawa in northern Japan has removed some songs from its rotation that its audience found objectionable, Petty Officer 1st Class James Stilipec said in an e-mail to Stars and Stripes. Examples include "Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body)" by Three 6 Mafia and "Get Like Me" by David Banner, Stilipec said.
"That being said, some of our music might still upset or offend listeners, but that can be said for all music," Stilipec said. "If we tried to satisfy absolutely everyone’s listening tastes, we wouldn’t be able to play anything at all."
At Sasebo, DJs play new music picks from the Power Gold system, a computerized music library and automated player used by AFN, said Petty Officer 3rd Class Frank "Gravy Train" Gravinese, the AFN detachment’s music broadcast director.
Some of the songs that are uploaded onto the Power Gold system come with a "lyrics alert," meaning they could be offensive. When that happens, his station’s policy is to not play them, Gravinese said.
The station still receives some complaints, though none lately, he said. About four songs without Power Gold lyric alerts have been banned by the station, he said, because some listeners consider them offensive.
"If a person brings up a legitimate concern, I can get my supervisor, and we can determine whether we will play it or not," Gravinese said. "We’ve got a lot of kids who listen … we try not put out stuff that could be offensive."
AFN radio stations "have more stringent rules about what we play than most stateside radio stations," said Air Force Master Sgt. Michael Brogan, AFN Tokyo’s operations manager, adding that they receive very few complaints about songs played on Eagle 810, the Kanto area AFN station.
Chances are, though, if it’s popular in the States, then listeners probably will hear it on AFN, Stare said.
Even if he removed songs such as "I Kissed a Girl" from his DJs’ playlists, the audience would still hear them when the station switched from live broadcasts to its satellite feed, because that’s what is being played in the States, he said.
Mindy Smith, 21, an Army spouse on Okinawa, said she has no complaints with the Katy Perry song.
While she and her husband, Army Sgt. Wesley Smith, 23, don’t like every song that plays on AFN Okinawa, they said the radio station does a pretty good job.
"They do the best they can … to provide a variety of music for everybody," the sergeant said.
No matter what they play, Stare said, the potential is there to offend someone.
"We can’t please everybody."

I don't mind the song...I do however think it should only be played at certain times. My 7 year old sings it when it comes on, and I turn it off when she is in the car and it comes on.....She said, "Mommy, why is a girl kissing another girl?". What do you say to that? So, I try to think of the best answer, and say, it is just a song, but one you don't need to know about yet...It is not a children's song.

Its better to talk to them now before they learn from the kids at school. You can only shelter kids from it for so long.

She is in first grade!!!What do they know...Age 8 is when I plan on having that talk with her....don't tell me how to parent....Believe me, she is not sheltered...she knows babies don't come from a stork...she knows...she was there when her sister was born.

Heh, I knew "what was what" way before 8. My parents had a medical book and I figured it out from there in like... kindergarten. Longer you wait, the more misinformed they become from their peers.

Why don't you just say, 'well, some girls like to kiss boys and some girls like to kiss girls'. I don't see that kids are going to read that much into it.

Most kids at 7 or 8 think it is yukky to kiss anyone.....don't they?

I never said it was the 'magic' age....When the age is right...which they say 8 is the average age, I will explain everything to her...oh, she knows quite a bit already.....just not the WHOLE thing. Kind of scary how much she knows at this early age. I might be ignorrant, but growing up, I learned about everything in 5th grade...when the boys went out while the girls stayed in and watched the movie.....my parents did not say anything to me until I was 15...and then it was too late......I already knew.

My boys are 3 and 9. I started teaching them about the human body and sex little by little. Kids are learning about sex younger and younger and the longer as parent stay in denial or wait to teach them about their bodies and about sex, it will hurt them. Kids are far smarter than we were as kids. The music, TV, movies and toys all influence their behaviors. The school yard is a bad place for him/her to ever learn about sex..

It depends on her maturity, I have to admit....I don't let anyone tell me what to do, I do, take suggetions, then ponder them to see if it may be something worth looking into.
Noone IS more knowledgeable than me about my child.....like I said, she just turned 7, and has no interest in boys, kissing, or anything of that nature. When she reaches a bit more maturity, then I will talk to her....

The books aren't wasting away in the library. They're kindly keeping them temperature controlled and safe for future generations and museums.

The person who controls the dials on the radio controls what songs are being "listened to" and "when".
I got some quick reflexes too, let me tell ya. When a song comes on that I do not like, I change that junk with a quickness, throw in a CD, play MP3s or turn it off. There, problem solved. I don't need the radio station to keep me safe from bad music, I'm responsible enough to see to it that my ears are spared of such things. Sure I may hate 98% of the songs played on the radio today, so I solve my problem by just not listening to it. Its tough work, I know.

I agree. Everyone learns it at some point. Hell, I learned about sex when I was 3 years old and found my dads porn drawer. I knew I wasn't supposed to look at that stuff in the bathroom so I tucked it under my shirt and went into the living room and sat down on the couch to read it. That didn't go so well. But my parents gave me a very vague explanation in a mostly scientific way and then I saw asking questions about it as a school subject more than something dirty. Not saying that was the best way, but it did help me learn about things like STD's and birth control and pregnancy without stumbling upon them first hand.
I learned that :12a: leads to :05: which leads to :20a: resulting in :03: covered in :150:

I just said I turn it off when it comes on...then the whole sex thing blew up...it is done, and over with....I am raising my child, not the schoolyard...I can't monitor her 24/7 at school...I do monitor what she listens to, and watches on TV....if she watched any that day. I am more in tune to my child than a lot of parents. TV is almost non existent. She plays outside...and like I said if she has a question, she knows she can ALWAYS come to me. Okay well...little late but my 2 cents.

I think it's a stupid song. But catchy. >.< In the same way that that one song...oh hell who sings it. I dunno but it goes something about ay-er, ay-ay-er, it's a stick up touch the ceilin' bay-be!...ay-er... :D :D :D I freaking love that song. <3 It transforms me into a gangsta!

The I kissed a girl song goes into the same "won't listen to it" category as that Avril song. The boyfriend one. The lyrics are just...childish and immature to me. Oh look at me! I kissed a girl! Now I'm gonna milk it for attention! Whatever I used to do that when I was a teen :P I dunno maybe I got old too fast as far as music goes. I'm 22 and most of the top 40s annoy the hell out of me and they don't play enough country. Not that I wanna listen to country all day but still. I still find myself listening though. To the top 40s I mean. It's all pretty hit or miss with me, just don't wanna always worry about changing out CDs cause I don't really care for listening to the same group for an entire CD (I need to invest in an MP3 player >.<). Except Rhianna (sp?), I tend to like her stuff. <3 that song she does with Maroon 5.

As far as the song being played on the radio...stop crying and turn just turn it off.

I did not vote, my answer isn't there. I don't hate it because it's the devil, I hate it because it's stupid. (but I understand why people would like it, it's catchy--I'm just a little anal about lyrics) :D Kudos for Katy. :)

That Amber girl's voice annoys me.

Only problem is sometimes you get stuck behind someone at a stoplight who has the same/close frequency as you and you have to listen to their music...it always makes me wonder when I'm in my husband's car if the people around him are being forced to listen to Britney Spears... :D

Yeah I want one, but the only one they had at the BX was about 90 bucks. I'm thinking about just getting it so I don't have to suffer any longer.

The new Radiohead album only costs like twelve bucks. Save yourself $78 for the weekend. Also, it doesn't take up much space. :D

Well I still say this song sucks. And it's not because I don't agree with the sentiment-even though I don't.

I did kiss a girl and I didn't like it. Just wasen't my thing. The kicker is she was Okinawan. She was a cool enough chick and all and even though I could tell she was really into me and wanted to do more I just was not feeling it. Oh well I gave it a shot.

Cool I wonder how many Okinawan/American female on female relationships exist here. I'm sure there's some. Some one should make some vids.
