Hi everyone! We are PCSing to Oki in Jan and I have never moved in the military let alone overseas so I have a lot of ?s coming my way and I'm hoping someone can help. First off I'm trying to get my overseas screening done and tricare screwed up my PCM so they directed me to a Dr. off base, but my husband told me that the overseas screening must be done by a Dr. in a military facility. Is this true? If so I need to cancel my apt with my dr. and set one up for the Naval Hosp. but I don't want to do that until I know for sure because It's taken me forever to get seen! Thank you for any help you can offer.

Stick with the military Docs on this one. Plus, you will need to get the Japanese Encephalitis shots as part of the screening. Your husband should be getting assigned a Sponsor on this end who should be contacting him with a ton of info. I don't know if you are Marine or Air Force but some websites that you can start with are:

http://www.kadena.af.mil/library/newcomers/index.asp
http://www.mccsokinawa.com/welcomeaboard/index.html?page=1

They will contain links to just about everything you need to know. Definitely get started now so everything will go smoothly...

I had to do my own overseas screening. I would agree that you would need to be seen by a doc on base also. I know when it came to dental for us, we had to be seen on base for the screening even though they usually did not see dependents otherwise. I would assume it would be the same for the doc.

Make sure when making your appointments that you state it is for an overseas screening. You would be suprised how many appointments "magically" open up. :)

Best of luck to you. You will love it here. :)

I just went to my regular PCP and dental provider for my overseas screening and physicals. I had them sign all of the appropriate paperwork and it never presented a problem for me. However, if possible, I would schedule an appt on base b/c you know you'll be dealing with providers that see the required paperwork over and over again. Also, start requesting copies of all your medical records from all clinics you've gone to in the past 7 years or so. Always good to have those on hand anyway.

For the Japanese encephalitis vaccine, it is not required for dependents. I'm an AF spouse and did not receive the vaccine before I came to Okinawa, nor did anyone ever even mention it to me as an option. I only knew about the rish b/c I'm an RN who worked in an immunization clinic before. It is available in the clinics here, so it shouldn't be a problem to receive once you arrive. Just carry around that bug spray!

Hey Mayberry,

Welcome! You'll love Okinawa, the people, the food and the community are great. Here's a good site for newcomer info:

www.okinawahai.com

There's a search function on the site and they may have what you're looking for.

Well, he recently said he found Jesus, so I wasn't sure if it was a sensitive issue. Maybe he found Jesus inside the barbie god. :thumbup1:

Congrats on the assigment Mayberry, you'll enjoy it!

As fars as the overseas screening that is required to be done at the last base... When I was stationed in Louisiana prior to my last tour to Okinawa, medical services were very limited on base. So, we were referred to off-base doctors/dentists to have the screenings done. The paperwork then comes back on base for review by the chief medical dude/dudette. Since you are referred, it is the same as seeing a base doctor!

HEY! I want a house with a nice ocean view, like 3 bedrooms 2 bath, nice patio where i can set up a grill and bar area. It can be off the beach with a good view but i really don't want to look at it over to many roof tops...any ideas?

Donden,

I have what you are looking for, but we don't move until the end of October.

We live in the middle of the island in an area called Onna. Great views, but a drive to the main bases of Foster or Kadena. (20-45 minutes depending on traffic, route and destination)

ask your housing company when you arrive about the possibilities further North on the island. The housing tends to be cheaper, less 'idiocity' from neighbors, and really friendly neighbors.
We have been in this house 5.5 yrs between 2 tours, and would come back here in a heart beat.

Good Luck,
Nav

Sexwax,

What do you mean you lost him? Dude, it was your turn to watch him! Go seek him.:grin1:

He was probably at Beer fest Saturday, you may have to go back on Sunday and try to locate him.....:grin1:

I found Him again....briefly, then He took His shirt off and yelled "Stage Dives" and ran away. The last time i saw Him was 0500 getting a tattoo on His arse that said "I luv Mom, **** Dad". Crazy ol' Jesus. I think He had a good time, but He'll be in Confession tomorrow !.
