Obon was first celebrated during the Middle Ages and on Okinawa, it is celebrated according to the lunar calendar. Ever since those times, Okinawans have followed tradition and prayed, eaten, sung and danced with the spirits of their ancestors during this annual event. The spirits are alerted of the arrival of obon by the cleaning of the tomb several days before the event begins. Family members get together at the tomb to clean it which lets the ancestors know they will soon be called forth to rejoin their family for a short visit.

Eisa is performed to please and console the ancestors and dispel any bad spirits.

They just finished up about 2 streets over from our house.... it's about 1am so I didn't head over and watch. I saw the last part of it from my roof though. Very cool! :thumbup1:

Ahhh, the nearing the
end of summer marked
by the echo of the Eisa
drums, how I do miss that.
'Obone' is next week? Or
the following week?
August 22-24, 2008?

We still get out the Bingata (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bingata) pajamas from time to time... :D

I also have one drum, 18" x 20" and the tambourine style one too.

Wife hates it when I bang on the drum, but I can close my eyes and feel like I am back in Oki...

Here is a video I found.

As you know it sounds a lost better in real life.
Peace! :army:

Hi,

They were across the street from our apartment the other day and they're making their way down our street again tonight hehe :D. I actually have a bit of film footage (not the best as it was taken from my balcony and I was on my toes lol...not a word :P) I'm not sure if I can upload this here anywhere, but I have it on facebook if anyone was interested. I'm hoping they will go past again to get a better shot :)
