Where are all the haunted places at?
The old hotel by the castle ruins, can someone tell me who the little girl is? I was driving around a few months ago, and I kept hearing a little girl crying and saying something in Japanese, but I pulled over to stop. The crying stopped, but I could feel that she was near when I looked up I saw a old hotel run down, you can see ghost around it. I drove around trying to see how I can get there. Japanese people told me no trespassing. Here I was asking this guy all these questions, shocking this guy like I have been in there before or something. I asked him why was there furniture in there still? who died? why are military in there right now drinking and pour stuff on the walls and trashing the place. Who is the little girl crying, talking in Japanese. Why did everyone get sick? Why did they disturb the ghost? Here I had so many questions, but they told me to go to the temple down the street. I went there and they told me to go to the castle ruins. I went back there and said the owner went crazy, can you give me his address? Next thing i know the cops show up. I left cuz I don't want any trouble. I would really like to put her back to rest. Here people tell me they go there all the time.
Is there any way of finding out who the girl is?
Wow, cool topic. I've been through that old deserted building once as a high school kid and it freaked me out. Never heard any crying though. Looking forward to reading others' posts on this matter.

i went to a place last weekend.. it was a very different experience. i felt.. sort of different. It was tough to breath in the entire area, and there was about 10 minutes where i was really cold yet it was 80 degrees outside. im not sure where it is, i went with some friends.

I have heard all these places that are haunted but have yet to see or hear anything!
Anyone have and REAL experience with the SUPERNATURAL??
I might have, but i spent years telling myself it was all in my head. I told my mom once when i was younger and she really got freaked out. I used to be really scared about stuff i used to see. now i just shrug what ever might be happening and find some silly reason to associate it with. I rather believe it was all in my head then let it drive me insane.
and as far as putting that lil girl to rest, I really can't imagine how that can be done.

That hotel isn't haunted! I asked my wife the same thing. She looked at me like I was crazy. She said they say it's haunted to keep little kids out of there. The reason they stopped building was because they went broke. They say the hill leading up to the futenma gate on 58 is haunted. But there are a lot of tombs in that area it's kinda spooky. I bought a small book about haunted places on okinawa at the bx. There were some interesting stories in there I would suggest picking it up.
As for me, I don't believe in ghosts.

what book is it? I'd like to read oon it. title?
I know of a few places that are supposedly haunted, one happens to be on the grounds of a local private HS in Naha.
The HS grounds just happen to be in line with Shuri Castle and the former "Sugar Loaf" hill from WWII fame. I know of kids that have supposedly seen ghosts of young teenage girls that were nurses from WWII and killed during the battle of Okinawa.
Personally I would just for once like to see a ghost, but unfortunately I am not the "type" of person to actually believe that they exist.
BUT I do believe the people that have seen them, their stories are just too "believeable" not to believe.

It's called ghosts of okinawa. It's a very small white book with a picture of a ghost on the front. It's usually in the foster px and kadena bx. It's about pocket size and very short. But it was still a good read.

People say the house by gate 2 is haunted by the USO an CDC. I have never seen any ghosts there, or felt anything bad there. But then I would have to go inside to see what really happend.

i know of a building north of nago, im not going to be specific, my wife and me went in it to explore, spent about 3 hours in it. it was defintely closed. wierd thing sis that it looks as tho one day the workers just got up in the middle of the day and left. tables are still set, rooms half made, even the gift store has stuff in it! So my wife and i are wierd and we thought how cool to spend and evening up there.....well we drove up and got to the place at near sunset. went to the door that we got in thru the first time and it was locked....from the inside. the weird thing is that there is no keyhole from the outside. also as we where walking back to our van a light came on in one of the rooms about 5 floors up. now beleive me. this place hasnt been fit for power in a LONG time. and there wasnt any vehicals around. here ill hook ya up with a pic...cause im nice.

I know I've been to a few haunted places, and some creepy caves. One cave was behind the haunted hotel, supposedly the cause of the haunting is the evil cave. I was also at a cave in yomiton where a bunch of people died during WWII. They had a creepy looking monument in front of the entrance and the place just seemed kinda strange.

Not everyone is going to sense a ghost in a place. They're the lucky ones. I on the other hand will usually sense when a ghost is present or has been present in a place.
I've been to Maeda Point at night with American men, but nothing happened when we were in a group. I went there on a date during the day, and felt there was something walking with us other than the tourists and animals. While house hunting here, we walked into a house that immediately screamed at me. There was a very unhappy ghost in that house. In our current house, we have a visitor ghost who was here when we first moved in, but is less frequent now.
In San Diego, I visited the Whaley House at night once and a few times during the day and encountered a ghost each time. I'm convinced. My friends' place in HB also has a ghost child who is rather docile and a visiting ghost who is not so nice.

ITT told me they don't go inside the places, they just drive by or stand outside from the place and tell their story behind it.
People have told me its a waste of money.. you can find things just driving around!

What about the CIA building on kadena. When i was based at kandea i visited the CIA (that's what my fellow airmen called it) it was a run down old building located in the bomb dump. I visited it only once the 2 years i was on Okinawa. The place give you an uneasy feeling when you walk in there.

:edit: In regards to the OP, I would love to go on a tour of all the haunted places on island. I love traveling off the beaten path and exploring. I still remember the time we found miyagi island castle, that was a lot of fun.
There's definitely a lot of spooky places on island. If there's anywhere where souls would be wandering, I imagine this would be one of the major spots with all that happend during WWII here.
I went to college in Ohio near where a bunch of witches were burned throughout history. Man, that place had some freaky spots too. And I lived in a 200 year old ex-hotel turned apartment. $50 a month. Can't beat that. But I always felt I wasn't alone in there. Freaaaaaaaky.

One more thing about haunted places. I had an experience on kadena AB.I worked in the bomb dump. I remember one night i was unloading a trailer of missiles on a holding pad. All of a sudden i head a woman singing in Japanese. It was coming from a small sugar cane field located in the middle of the dump. When i went to investigate who was singing, i came to the edge of the sugar cane field and all of a sudden it stopped. nothing! slient!! when i turned around to walk away, it started again.I shined my flashlight along the canes and it stopped again. I was so freaked out i ran back to my truck and took off. LOL. i told my story to a few of the guys and they said they have heard it also. true story.

I too have heard that there are a lot of haunted places in the ammo area. I heard something about a lake where a bunch of japanese soilders died and that a whole lot of them are still walking around there.
Cool story steelviper. :)
Ok, fine, I'll bite. Here's a story.
In that apartment I was living at in Ohio, one night I woke up in the middle of the night and for some reason something just didn't look right about my roommate's bunkbed across the room. I tried focusing my eyes so I could figure out what it was that was looking strange. It was like an extra lump was hanging off the bed.
Suddenly, this extra lump jumped off, ran out of the room, slamming the door and made a LOT of noise as it tore out. Freaked the hell outta me.
I can't say it was a ghost. Seemed more like a goblinish thing to do. Never heard of any ghost stories like that, but man, I was :scared: after that. And that's just one of many stories from that dang apartment. I was so glad I left that place!
And no, I am not just kidding around!

Are you sure you didn't have bed migets?
I'd have to see something like that to make me fully believe in ghosts. I'm skeptical, and not a real believer, but I don't rule out the possibility.
I'm not sure I'm a believer either. I have this theory that what we're seeing is some sort of time echo. But it's still freaky. Some things I've seen kind of seem like that whole time echo type thing, but a few other more interactive things I've seen/heard just leave me puzzled.
And I'm sure a lot of stories are just overactive imaginations.

well i can't speak for it now. Its been 11 years since i was on the island, but there is a small lake(more like a pond) in the dump. There are also many caves and a few old rusted downed zero fighter planes.I've seen some weired things in the dump. I worked the mid shift (11pm-7am) for about a year. So i had to drive all around the dump at night. The dump is huge!! miles!! I have seen a few (balls) of light. I've seen many shadows and i have see something to this day still brings chills to my spine. I saw something in my rear view mirror of the truck i was driving pass behind the trailer i was pulling. All i know that it was just a white flash of something. I have heard voices in the wind at night. Cant tell you what they were saying.Spooky place at night. The SP's did not like to patrol the dump at night. all true stories.

I'd love to go out there at night and see what I could find. I think the ammo area would be a cool place to just explore and find cool things like old downed planes. There is an agency on base that actually goes around and find things like that. The amount of shells that are buried on kadena is huge.
Some students say there is a old plane wreck near the high school, but no one has found it yet.

I just wish i could be back on that beautiful island. Miss it. great people. Locals and military. Its a very beautiful place during the day(bomb dump). huge area. you can get lost very easy. i did. LOL. yeah but at night its very spooky. very very dark. I remember one night the power went out in the entire dump , so i was left alone to guard the chaff and flare building. My boss left to go see what was going on. Like i said you could hear voices in the wind. here i'am in the middle of a dark jungle alone, and sitting in a chair. Hearing voices in the wind. Sounded Japanese. I remember many times the sp's getting called out to the dump in the middle of the night for "intruder" calls. Any finding nothing.

My son still insists there was something in his room in our first apartment we lived in off base. He was five at the time. He said he couldn't sleep a lot because something would keep tapping his shoulder. He said he would feel it and then turn over the other way and feel the tapping again.

I have heard a lot of stories from different people. Can't say I have had an experience myself here. Not sure that I want to. Very interesting though. Makes you wonder though if you were on a tour or someone taking you to a place that they TELL you is haunted; just how much your mind would imagine things.
Just make sure you let him vent. There's nothing worse, regarding this topic, for a kid who is convinced he saw something than to be ignored by his parents regarding the topic. It's a genuine concern for the kid, I'm sure.

yikes! creepy stuff!
I don't recall ever seeing a being that was not of the current human realm....though have occasionally felt stuff that was off or sensed something was weird.
Know someone that see's stuff, one time we were hanging out I commented I felt something odd and she was like yeah, its over there in the corner. (she had never told me before then she saw stuff) I think seeing it could be more creepy than just feeling it.
Her little one has been seeing stuff since she was 2 or 3.....that swould be pretty crazy, how do explain to a 2-3 yr old what they are seeing, everyone doesn't see?

Yeah, I think a lot of what people have experienced as sighting are, in most cases, just their minds going active. Even if it's not on purpose, I'm sure our subconscious fears play a part into many experiences.
But there are some experiences that I just can't dismiss. Like, why would I, while sitting on the floor playing video games minding my own business, suddenly be pushed hard from nothing behind me? It was the middle of the afternoon! That's just weird.

At that point, I think I would have found a reason to go home. :scared: Or, if it was a brave day, I probably would have walked over to the corner to say hi. I guess it would depend on my mood at the time.

We lived out Gate 3 in White River Mansion and my 4 year old refused to sleep in his room. He would flip out every night or if we would put him in there after he fell asleep he would wake up within 10 minutes screaming. We ended up putting a toddler mattress in our floor to let him sleep. He didnt care if he slept on the floor or the mattress he just didnt want to sleep in his room. Then we moved on base and he sleeps just fine in his room. I thought it would be hard to get him to sleep in his room after sleeping in our room for some time but nope. He went right in there and went to bed. NOW, friends of mine live in the same apartment and she said that odd things happen around the house.

I'm not 100% sure but i believe the idea of puting salt in doorways is from voodoo rituals and sutch, its not so much to stop spirits if i remember correctly but to stop anyone who means you arm. They would simply not cross the salt, even if they don't see/notice it there. I think now a days "Healers" use it to clense a room.

I guess salt is like Okinawan (Japanese too?) holy water, garlic, etc. I've been told that's why you often see little cups of salt at the doors of local houses/businesses. Supposedly, it keeps the evil spirits out. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I've had something similar happen...
Mine was just breathing. I heard breathing at my friends house once (wasn't either of us), and my friend heard it too. His house was just creepy. All kinds of weird stuff would happen in his room. Suddenly, his room would just start being windy, etc. But anyway, several times when I was at his house watching movies with him, we'd hear breathing in the room, and it wasn't either of us.

I have heard many spirits are territorial so you very well be right Ohio may have been their area and they couldn't go with you to Oki.
So I looked up the salt thing.....here is something I found.
Traditionally spirits/demons find certain things like salt repulsive because it preserves and they destroy

Since DK was brave enough to say one i'll share one of mine. Altho i still believe to this day that its all in my head, i refiuse to let myself believe its real simply because i don't want to see or hear or feel stuff like that everyday.
I think its one of my worse experience when it comes to this subject.
I was in my bedroom, i was about 12 or so. i was bend over picking something on my closet's floor. I stood up and turned around, and there was a man hung infront of me. And from the looks of it, he had been there for a long long loooong time. the skin had started to decay, and some of it was missing on his face, mostly on his right cheek/around the eye. his cloths were damaged and sutch. I could smell him. he was as real to me as anyone else. I am almost certain that if i would have tried to touch him i would have felt him there and he would have moved from the push. But yeah i didn't touch him, infact i was so scared i just backed away in my closet and close the door. then i panic cuz i locked myself in a tiny space with no light and no way out except back to where the dead guy was hanging...I must have stayed there a good 30 mins before i dared open the door again.
But yeah. I must have been real tired or something to see and smell something like that XD

My sister had a friend that her Aunt had died and haunted their house. When they moved she did too. I guess she walks up and down the hallway and then stands at the top of the stairs. My sister had gone to this friend's house for a bbq and refused to go into the house by herself to use the bathroom.

Sorry I don't have any cool ghost stories, I've never seen a ghost. Thats probably why I don't believe in them. I'd love to see one though and make me a believer.
I'd love to go to the hotel but I have work so I can't!

Interesting subject. There's a book out called "Ghosts of Okinawa" that is supposed to be quite good. I never saw anything too weird when I was there but my girlfriend was quite superstitious, told me all kinds of weird stories, had a friend that everybody thought was a ghost. Then I slowly realized most Okinawans are pretty superstitious. I'm not really a believer but that island has seen more than its share of horrors, so who knows.

Well i will tell you that on kadena there is a place that is haunted to a degree it is the bomb dump. i work out here at night and it is real spooky. there are many places here that you realy don't want to be around during the day let alone at night. i would say you need to come out here but 99.9% of you all are not allowed to.

Can I take you with me when I go house hunting?? I don't need/want any ghost visitors or permanent residents living with me that aren't already part of the family.

:edited:
i beg to differ my friend.
let me begin by saying that the popular story of the nakagusuku royal hotel is this: a rich developer from mainland came down to oki with intentions of building a hotel. he was told over and over again not to build near the nakagusuku ruins being that there were many tombs there, as well as a sacred cave. he did anyways, people being mysteriously dying on the site, and his work force got freaked out and left him high and dry. he invested so much money in the project that he eventually went bankrupt. and, as the story goes, he went crazy and is still on oki in some mental ward.
this is the real story: the hotel development began, the japanese government decided that the nakagusuku castle ruins, along with the surrounding area, would become a world heritage site and that's why the project was ceased.
however, there ARE many old tombs around the area, throughout the jungle...crumbling, overtaken by the jungle, and forgotten. also, there IS a cave at the top of the mountain near the main tower. i ventured into it one day and, like numerous other caves on oki, found there to be many shrines within it.
now, let me share some of my experiences at the hotel...as i have been there many times.
1. the first time i went was in 99 with a bunch of friends. it was about midnight and, ofcourse, we were all drunk. we snuck around the buddhist monastery, climbed the mountain until we got to a trail and walked around until we reached the hotel. when we were in there, one of my buddies kicks one of the doors that was closed...he wasn't able to kick it open because you had to turn a handle to accomplish this. about 3 seconds later the handle starts turning, the door slowly opens and we jet! running further into the hotel we get to a large, open room. once we got there, we all stopped and tried to figure out what was going on. very shortly after, we begin hearing a rumbling in the room grow louder and stronger. after that we just jet from the place.
now, i know that there was an old man living up there for a period of time but he didn't live in the room where we kicked the door...unless he just happened to be staying there that night. regardless, if he was responsible for the door opening, there was no way he could have been the cause of the rumbling that seemed to resinate from the ceiling. there were about ten of us there that night and we all experienced the same thing. also, there are no longer doors in the hotel...this was about ten years ago.
2. once again, very late at night-this time only with two other buddies, we were walking outside on the road along the side of the hotel in attempts to get to the front (near the grassy knoll). as we were walking, we stopped to discuss where the pool was. i was the first one to hear something...we were standing about 10 feet from the hotel and there was a window near us. however, it was dark so you couldn't see inside the window, you could only see the outline of the window. from that window i heard somebody walking around...but a very lazy walk...almost a dragging of the feet. i froze, scarred as hell. i told my friends to listen. they heard it to and now we were all freaked out. we had no light so we couldn't look inside to see what the source was but it was definetly something walking around and something large. (human size) and keep in mind, this was only about 10 feet away and we're in the middle of the jungle with no source of light and no refuge from the terrifying surroundings. we calmly walked away from the area and stayed there until sun rise as to avoid having to walk back through the hotel and the jungle in the dark.
3. once again walking along the side of the hotel...same place we were when we heard the walking. this time i was with about 5 or 6 people. behind me one of my buddies says "look!" he was pointing to the second floor right above the room where we heard the noises before. i look up and there is a faint glow illuminating the walls of the room. though i couldn't see the source of the light because of my vantage point from the ground looking up, i could see that the room was indeed lit up. then, the light slowly died down and lit up in the next room. we were the only people there that night...and that night some of the other people i was with didn't want to go inside after they saw the light so we left.
4. i just went back up there about 6 months ago. it was the first time i had been up there in nearly 8 years. some younger folks i worked with wanted to go up there so i took them. now, this time i didn't see anything but a few of them said they saw a figure in white peer at them from some distant window. they both dismissed it as nothing...then we went down to the pool area and one of the chicks freaks out saying that she saw the figure again looking down at us from one of the windows and then ducking back behind the wall. she started crying as if she just had a tramatic experience. i have never seen a full figure. i have only heard weird thing, seen doors open, apparently, by thenmselves, and that glowing light that was weird as hell...and about 5 of us saw as well.
listen, everyone is allowed to believe what they want. all i know is that i have never in my life experienced anything paranormal outside of what i saw and heard at this hotel. and i've always been advertureous. i've gone to supposedly haunted places in the past...but there is definetly something strange about this place.
and though i've been terrified a couple times there, i never felt like there was a menacing presence there. in fact, when you get through the scariness of the hotel, and you get to the top of the main tower and you can see both the east china sea on one side of the island, the pacific on the other, and all the lights of the life going on around you, it is a quite humbling and beautiful experience. and then you look at where you're at and you see that you're still in this old, weathered, bizarre, and forgotten structure in the middle of the jungle. it can be an extremely strange experience.

well i can't speak for it now. The SP's did not like to patrol the dump at night. all true stories.
mark
yeah man...i worked telephone maintenance on kadena so whereever there was a phone, we had to work...so i've been out to munz many, many times...sometimes, when we had time to kill we would just go out and there and explore.
there are many stories about duck lake including the ridiculous one that the water can be drained because they store nuclear munitions under it. lol.
also, i have been to that one cave where you have to hold the rope to get down the hill and then there's just a big cave opening but it doesn't go back more than 200 hundred feet. i use to smoke cigs in there all the time.
i also know of another cave but this one is man made. you have to take a bunch of stairs down into the jungle and then there's a cave that goes back about 100 feet.
i've heard of more caves in munz but never saw them. i've been to the waterfall a bunch of times. back in the day we use to swim there during work hours...well, not me but some of the other knuckle heads i worked with.
and i've also heard many ghost stories about the place. i only went there at night time a couple times when i was working sp augmentee duty during the g8 summit back in 2000. oh man-we never got out of the vehicle but that place is ******* scary at night...man, **** that place at night.
what other cool things are back there?

And I beg to differ, we all know the stories! I've seen the supposed "haunted" cave and there isn't nothing special about it. Worst I'd be worried about would be one of those big centipedes biting me. Total BS story to keep the kiddies away.
Also, notice how one of your story starts with "we were all drunk", automatically mooted IMO. Also, it is in the middle of the jungle. You'll probably hear noises and see strange things in the middle of the night. Also, there are other people who frequent the "haunted" hotel at night. There is a possibility that those "lights" you see could be from one of those people or even a car passing on a nearby road. Basically, if you go up there pre freaked out and ready to see ghosts you'll think every little noise and flash of light is a "ghost". Also, IIRC the pool area is outside and quite over grown. Almost impassible without something to cut though the vegetation. Oh and let's not forget the most "girls" are drama queens and if they were "pre" freaked out about the place they would probably wet their pants and cry if a gokiburi ran in front of them.
Sorry, just too many "if" type scenarios in most ghosts stories to make be belief them. A ghost would have to come up to me, say "I'm a ghost", and then disappear for me to believe it. Oh and I'd have to be sober:D

all points taken...this is the classic routine of things concerning claims of paranormal events. somebody makes a claim and others attempt to pick those claims apart and discredit them. no sweat-i do the same to other folks. i can appreciate the skepticism...but the bottom line is this-you weren't there. i was.
i cannot definetively say what i saw and heard were ghosts. but these are just things that are completely out of the norm and atmosphere lends itself to wonder.
all arguments aside, i would recommend anybody interested to venture out for themselves rather than take the word of you or i as we seem to take opposite stances on the subject.
*edit* you are right about the pool...it is heavily overgrown now. but 10 years ago it wasn't and we use to ride the backings of plastic school chairs down the slides. i remember one night is was raining so the surfaces were extra slick. we would FLY down the slides, fly off the edge and slide all the way across the pool until we hit the wall on the other side. ahh, the memories!

Back in '95-98 we used to go up to the Nakagusuku hotel and use a Ouija board up in top of the tower. Even had a pentagram painted on the floor.
an that thing would go crazy sometimes.
Also there is a park next to Futenma that people have said was haunted. The only wierd thing that happened to me there was one night I was up there with my girlfriend and some crazy old man came running up yelling and screaming and then threw an ice cream cone at us...

I know people have "heard" the stories about the "haunted" house on Foster in Kishaba? if not there are some going around about people moving in killing their family and themselves or something. Anyways, I just kinda put that aside due to the fact that it's an island and there has been death all over the place. And well its a rumor so who knows anyways. Anyways for $hit$ and giggles, one weekend night we walked down there. I took my digi cam with me.
The back yard of the place has always given me a odd feeling. I just never liked the way I felt. I have always let that be known as well. To my friends and hubs, my mom when she was here. Anyways, while standing close to the field by the back yard I took a pic. looking to the back yard. After having taken many already. Well....this strange fog like stuff pretty much covered the whole pic. So I asked Jena who was beside me if she was smoking, she said no and I look to see shes not, she didn't even have her smokes with her. Jason and I didn't bring ours with us. Show I showed her the pic, she said hurry take another, so I did, while standing in the same spot. That pic nothing showed up at all.
After we got back, we both had a smoke, and tried to take pics to see if we could get our smoke to show up like that pic did.....nothing we did would make the same thing. So I am at a loss for words on what it would be. They are still on my cam....I will see if I can get them on here for ya'll to see.
Anyways just thought that was interesting....
I thought that house was on Kadena. I never heard about the one on Foster w/ the same story.

There's a number of trails leading to the hotel from the opposite direction (opposite from the castle). If you look on google maps, you'll see some good parking spots, and turnouts on a couple of the roads coming off of the 146.
If you have a GPS, you can find a good parking spot, and trail at N 26° 17.007 E 127° 47.701 That trail will lead you to the hotel, which can be found at N 26° 16.960 E 127° 47.856 That way, you won't have to pay for parking, or worry about when the castle park closes. :w00t:

I'm currently TDY and will be here the remainder of the month. I'm out of Yokota and have been over here plenty of times as we have Hops out of there all the time.
Currently I'm staying here at The Costa Vista. It's nice and very spacious. Just last week my family took a Hop over to visit and see the sights.
Well, what was most out of the norm happened on the last night.
We all go to sleep early....around 2100ish (that's EARLY for us).
Anyhow,
at or around 0200ish my wife wakes me up and asks me if I had brought 'something in some Asian dialect. I reply, 'what did you say?'
And she repeats the same thing....I didn't even hesitate as to calling her crazy and she turned away angrily and laid back down.
I almost couldn't sleep afterwards as she had me wondering what the heck she was talking about.
I finally asked her today if she remembers talking to me and she thinks i'm crazy.
SO my question is; Anyone ever experience anything like this?
Honestly, she has only waken up a couple of times before talking to me but usually is as if she's making sure that the next day's events are going to be ok....and she's normally co-herant during these episodes.
I tell you this island has something deeper than one could ever imagine.

Make sure you drink lots of Green Apple Chu-hi. Chu-hi is known to keep the spirits away. Or does it bring the spirits closer.....anyway, just drink alot.
I already bought a bottle of Habu Awamori from a local vendor...So i should have the balls of a habu snake after a few shots tonight. At least that's what the Okinawan national I work with told me. Otherwise it's going to be a good night...? LOL
