Topic: Expressions
This is the 2nd of the attempt to get people out and about to shoot what they see around their everyday lives. This month's topic is Expressions. Shooting a winning goal, a tearful good-bye at the airport, or a smile on the street. We see expressions everywhere. Try this month to capture one to share here! Happy Shooting!
REMINDER:
This month's prize is 3 free months of Pro Flickr!!!
The photo(s) must be taken during the month of the assignment. ( ie: this topic is for the month of August )
The assignment will be open for the entire month. The first 5 days of the following month will be the voting period.
Voters will vote for (3) three photos in the order that they think should be placed. ( ie: If a voter post 4, 6, 8. The voter believes #4 should be first place, #6 should be second place and #8 to be third place )
I know last month's voting was changed up a little at the end. This month I will explain better. Gomen!
Anyone can vote and you can vote for yourself too.
If you want, you can post (2) two photos!
Please resize photos for forum viewing. Nothing larger then 800x600 if possible
'eh...maybe 500 width is better?
Need a place to upload photos? Try the following ( I'd watermark them first ):
http://imageshack.us
http://www.imagehosting.com
http://www.picoodle.com
http://photobucket.com
Or start a flickr account. http://flickr.com
If you have questions, feel free to PM me. I am quite active; at least to my standards. ( also PM me if you have ideas. I want prizes later on when I return to Okinawa. I'll have deep pockets ;x )
I want prizes later on when I return to Okinawa. I'll have deep pockets ;x )
I'll talk to the boss and see if we can help out.
Is it OK to alter an image to enhance the expression? I don't mean full photoshopping a photo, but stuff along the lines of adjusting color balance, brightness/contrast, blemish removal, etc...

It is very OK. Thank you for asking. Yes, photographers like it RAW :w00t:
So afterwards in photoshop we can fix the color balance and contrast and etc...
Hope to see your entry!
dk,
Yea. I am working with this design company and I am asking if they give me a Flip Video so I can give it away here. I'll keep bugging until I get something :army:
Thanks for asking your mero mero ( top dog )!!!!

You just post it in this thread. Upload it to an image hosting service as shown in the 1st post, then put the [img] tag around it. Or just give us the URL of the image and we'll post the img tags around it.

When it is a legitimate question... maybe it should be answered. As P said, my dog is very capable of several expressions.
If you'd like I can take my pics down if the do not fit into the theme.

I'm not sure you understand what I said. I said ANY WAY possible. There are no rules or boundaries because you are making them.
If it looks like an expression to you, then it is. A person, animal, car, cloud, anything.
Sorry for answering late (I don't come here on the weekends) and sorry if it came off as a negative response, because I never am on the internet, per say, negative. I didn't mean for it to be negative. :)

Did you mean to say "It's how you interpret the theme?". Your original response to Trailryder was kind of confusing...:scratchchin:

How did my image end up in Socal's post above?
I am confused.
I right-clicked the picture that showed as a red x and copied the URL, which was actually a search. I then did the same for the actual picture. After that, I used the forum BBC code to post the image with its original URL.
I wanted to be sure your entry was submitted, counted and seen by everyone particiapting. :)

So, quick question...
How is it fair for a professional to post pics in an forum photo contest full of amatures? :scratchchin:
Your 135mm F2L Lens alone costs as much as my hubby's car at about $900-$1000. I am sure your whole set up has costed you at least $3,500-$5,000.
Not fair IMO since you will definately have more quality shots and more opportunities than us average joes.

I agree, trail, but this is an open forum. Let's limit entries to those pictures from which the photographer received no compensation for taking. The poster/photographer would be on his/her honor to submit amateur photographs. If the voter doesn't think the photograph is of amateur quality, then don't vote for it when the time comes.

I understand that this is an open forum. It was however, never stipulated by Luna whether or not professional photographers were open to submit freely. It's up Luna since this has been his creation and brain child.
I personally don't how people will choose not to vote for a professional picture vs. amature when pitted against each other.
A picture taken with a $200-$500 camera < a picture taken with a $1000+ camera.... no competition if the person as one sliver of creativity.

I agree with trial. While I know it is an open forum, as it should. It is a tad unfair for a professional photographer to enter a contest with a bunch of beginners using who are probably using a 3 year old canon ixy.
:edit: On a side note, what website does everyone host pictures on? And what program do you use (and recommend) for reducing the size of your pictures?

My dog sleeps a lot. This is my second entry. The other picture was taken with a camera phone so I figured I use this one I took with my FZ18. High res picture is better, but this is the best I can get with my free photobucket account:D.

@ Trail and P_Chan...I don't/won't usually vote for the cleanest pic. I would rather vote for the pic that makes me laugh, or makes me feel something from the user. I wouldn't worry if he/she is a pro or not, just submit your pics that you feel are worthy and let them stand for themselves.

I proposed to Luna that professional photos (recreational or professional) should be labeled as "SUBMIT ONLY, NO VOTE." That way they can get the feed back they want but it still keeps the playing field fair for amatures.
That's just my 2 cents worth though.
Unless the photographer works for National Geographic, I really don't think it's a big deal. In many cases, there isn't a world of difference between professional and non-professional photography, and many professional photographers are self-labeled and actually work in a completely different field.

P, I use Photoshop Elements 4 and Photobucket. You can borrow my PSE4 disk to install on your comp. if you like. It is a great program with LOTS of bells and whistles that I have yet to figure all out.

OK. Good points and opinions in the air. Here is the thing, I've been in photography enough to know that equipment DOES matter. People who say the good 'ol fashion "It's not the camera, it's the photographer (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22It%27s+not+the+camera%2C+it%27s+the+photograp her%22&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f)" thing, don't know the right tool for the right job. (a saying for a saying!)
Most people here at these forums use P&S (point & shoot) type cameras and he, Jason (aka www.jaaphotography.com) is using a Full Frame camera. The difference is HUGE, VERY HUGE.
I will allow that his photographs to be voted on, but since I know he already has a pro account for flickr, I am only offering the prize for the runner up who doesn't have a pro flickr account. I'm sure Jason will understand.
Trailryder61403 came up with a good route of letting "pros" enter their photographs but only as visuals and non-votable photos. I think this is a good idea. Maybe he can help along the creative side of the other members and more participation will follow with their aids. I'm sure the "pros" won't mind helping in that manner.
Along with this, I plan on posting a few lessons on photography. Terminology and parts of a camera (entry level dSLR), some adjustments, and some tips on other stuff "pros" use.
PS:
And Jason's set-up (http://www.flickr.com/people/okinawa360/) is actually way, way, way more then that. :w00t:

I like the simple point and shoot digital cameras. I'd prefer to keep the contest on an amateur level though. Afterall, this is for fun. :D
I took the photo classes in high school, took the pictures for the high school paper and love taking pictures of my friends and family. I'm Asian; it's not only in my blood, it's expected. :p I think this is fun. Hopefully, it'll get me out of the house for more than errands.

OK I have to chime in here. Equipment DOES matter. However, A LOT does have to do with the photographer. I have seen some absolutely great photos with top of the range nikon/canons and also some really s**t ones (I am talking out of focus, colour all messed up, etc). On the flip side, there are some OUTSTSNDING photos taken with a point and shoot and some not so outstanding. There is an Australian wedding photographer who uses a point and shoot alongside his DSLR and some of those P&S images make it into his portfolio...
Just my opinion chiming in...
