Does anyone know of any bonsai nursery in Okinawa?

A place that specialises in bonsai? No. If you're just interested in bonsai, you could try a DIY center with a nursery like Makeman or Sakumoto.

Where are they located?

Makeman used to have an area always set up for bonsai growers throughout Okinawa to sell their trees. They were real nice, but I don't think they sold enough for Makeman to keep it going on a permanent basis. Now, they just have special times throughout the year that they have that sale.
But, Makeman does sell bonsai trees that have just been planted and which have not really been arranged into any interesting shape.
When they do have their special sales throughout the year and the serious bonsai growers bring their plants, those growers (mostly old men) often hang around and you can ask them questions. That would be the best way to find where their nurseries are. Or just go to a JA (Japan Agriculture) branch/office to see if they could recommend a nursery. I think most of them are just old men or hobbyists who sell occassionally to the big stores. I don't think they have their own nurseries open to the public.
But, I could be wrong.

Once I went to the yomiton festival last year they have bonsai growers there. They had an awesome huge bonsai tree. But of course it cost an outrageous sum of money. Like everything else in japan!

I thought the idea of bonsai was to keep it small and pruned.

Thanks everyone for the reply. I'm just looking at buying some bonsai tools and akadama which I can't get in Australia. Won't be able to buy the bonsais as we've the strictest quarantine law in the whole world! ;(

Bonsai literally means "plant in pot". They can be pretty big sometimes.

Ha! Imagine that... I've been growing and killling bonsai my whole life. :p I had no idea. The only plants I've ever had survive for me are cacti and a spider plant. It's so sad... :crying:
Chobi is so good, she can even kill cacti.

So...........are Bansai tree's just really midget trees, or are they shrubbery? If you were to grow a bansai apple tree, would it have little baby apples?

that kind of reminds me of one of my wife's "highly intelligent" friends, she was watering and caring for a cactus plant for three years and wondered why it did not grow. She took back to the plant shop and complained only to find out the the plant was fake :grin1:
I looked into Bonsai a few years back. Too time-intensive but when I retire I'll be like Mr. Miyagi.
