Just read a review of his first book. Sounds like the "pop/drug culture" of the USA 60's arriving a bit tardily in Japan during the mid 70's. LOL, I'm more of an "action/adventure" person in my choice of books, movies and television. Not knocking ANYONE else's taste in literature. I still enjoy the "written word", read at MY pace, MUCH more than the e-books and "kindle" things.
