I am new to Okinawa and am a huge fan of imported cheese. Does anyone know of a cheese import shop in Okinawa? Also, is Okinawa or Japan known for any type of cheese?

welcome to the cheese wilderness. Cheese is not well liked by most Japanese and consequently all you'll find is bland processed stuff. There are a couple of places that sell a very limted range of imported cheese but it is insanely expensive. You are in Ginowan - Try Jimmy's on R58, the big SAN A supermarket on the Conventon Center bypass has a small selection - used to be better when it opened but I guess no one was buying it. If you have base access that'l be a better bet of getting cheese with any flavor at a reasonable price. There is a place in the Plaza house shopping mall in Okinawa City that may have some too.

Better off buyng yourself a cow or goat and doing it yourself...:crying:

ALL of the A-Plus retaurant supply stores carry at least a 1/2 dozen to a dozen varieties of foreign cheeses.

Downstairs at Palette Kumoji are even more (Be prepared to pay through the nose). Downstairs at Mitsugoshi, the same.

Jimmy's has only bland processed cheese, and the place at Plaza House has now changed to Kanehide.

If you can shop on base and get cheese you are lucky, will you take me sometime:)

There are really not many places to find good cheese which are not ridiculously expensive and it has recently gone up. You can get some in big San-a's or the A-price but certainly not gourmet cheeses.
Just some australian cheddar and some local camembert.

Yeah, FBC (http://www.fbcusa.com/eng/ - just type "cheese" into the search box), and Costco (http://www.theflyingpig.com/tfp/List.asp?WCI=List&SS=cheese&LN=1&SC=173&sid=45937A5D4FF6F24B1CF4). Not cheap, shipping required, and selection can leave something to be desired. But better than life with no cheese.

Perhaps "strangely" or not...I LOVE the Kraft Extra Sharp Cheddar cheese right outta the commissary. My oldest daughter and her family in Wisconsin love Bleu Cheese.

Cheese with everything...eggs (scrambled eggs 'n cheese, OR a good cheddar omlet, w/or w/o other ingredients), sandwiches (meat, no meat, toasted, or grilled), on crackers (toasted or not). It's just a really versatile food. Even cheese with OUT ANYTHING. Yummmmmmmmmmy cheddar.

A-Price is the restaurant supply places. The one in Naha is on 329 about a kilometer before the bus station and the intersection with RT 58.

The one at the Urasoe/Naha borderline is on RT58 about 2 kilometers before the Pizza House as you are heading out of town. If you make a u-turn shortly before the PizzaHouse (old american consulate) - (the base will be alongside you on the left before you u-turn), I think it is right after the Toys R Us/Kids R Us intersection and it is ON 58.

If my directions are unclear, please ask me again, and I'll try to clarify.

Yes, there is a Bridgestone store near there - You would like this place a lot - as they sell industrial size quantities, there are some real bargains to be had.

Also, many items not commonly found elsewhere.

Large supply of whiskies and other alcoholic beverages - NOTHING special about the beer varieties, though.

No, only the one near Tsutaya in Yamauchi, Okinawa city and that was a good 10 months or so ago.
If the prices are reasonable I will go there next time and check it out. I once bought some frozen pizzas there and was outraged at the price, but i liked their nan bread, which was I think my reason for going there.

OK, the 1ST place to start is the map (bigm, you might wish to check out the western style menu - portions won't be enough for ya' but tastes will be familiar):

http://pizza-house.jp/

If ya' head toward Naha as shown on the map, exactly 2 km. later, you'll come to a big Toys/Kids R US sign at an intersection. Right after the intersection you'll see "EagleII" pachinko and a large Mazda dealership on the other side of 58. The dealership is located right at the edge of Camp Kinser. You will now be directly in front of a large green and red sign which says in English "A-Price."

In addition to an assortment of large sized processed cheeses, a variety of imported fruit flavored cream cheeses, some processed smoked cheese, and sour cream, today's offering included:

New Zealand gouda - 340¥/140 gm.
Rosenberg bottled Danish blue cheese in olive oil 830¥/ 150 gm cheese: 300 gm. total
Arla Apetina bottled feta cheese in olive oil 920¥/150 gm cheese: 300 gm. total
Gerard French camembert (sp.?) 620¥/125 gm.
Gerard French fromage rouge 650¥/125 gm.
Gerard French fromage blue 660¥/125 gm.
Arba Danish blue 380¥/100 gm.
Rosenberg Danish blue 380¥/100 gm.
Mycella Italian HARD parmagiano reggino 1,300¥/160 gm.
Rollo soft Danish mozzarella 4,150¥/2.3kg.
Frico Hollanders edam 3,540¥/1086 gm.
Moringa soft mozzarella (baseball sized ball packed in water) 350¥/100 gm. (they usually used to have an Italian similar item slightly more expensive)

They frequently used to carry large tubs of nascarpone cheese imported from somewhere in Europe which was somewhat expensive.

Additionally, they carry many kinds of large bags of shredded cheeses/cheese prodicts which are presumably used for pizza.

PS - I'm sure I missed some, but the wife and I were rushing (because of the heat) to get home to watch some foreign language films I downloaded from MiniNova

Good luck and good eating!

If you're driving on that road that takes you from Nishihara and directly past AMC hospital (on your left), you'll end up in Shuri.

Just before you get to that massive intersection fairly close to the final stop on the monorail, you will notice the bakery on the left side of the street. The bakery is about fifty to one-hundred meters before that road meets the massive intersection.

We live in Ginowan and visit the bakery fairly rountinely. It's worth the trip.

sorry, but since we're on the topic of cheese and bread, i think it's only fitting that we also briefly mention wine.

there's a really nice wine cellar right on 58 after the second fly-over, just before you reach lawson near shintoshin. cave de chinen has an eye-popping collection of wines from all over the planet. the most impressive collection i've ever seen, yo.

their wines are extremely reasonably priced, and easily rival what's on offer in the package store / class 6 on base. if you join up with them for a thousand yen, you get access to their stock. wow.

Finally found the Marco Polo today! Awesome.
You wont keep me away now.

Got directions from a friend.

Here is my directions for the dumb civilian coming from
Ginowan/Urasoe.
Drive up 330 and turn right at the Legion gate, drive down the hill to Toguchi inter. Drive straight for about 5mins till you come to the 2nd SAN-A(clothing store) and turn left
at that traffic signal. Drive past the Max value and Kentucky and when you see a Ryukyu Bank on the left it is next door. Open 8am - 9pm.

Now if anyone could just tell me where to get a decent block of cheese:D

Have you tried any of the local Okinawa Goat Cheese? It's pretty tasty. Similar to Feta.

You can make deep fried Okinawa Goat Cheese and Bacon Spring Rolls. Put a avacado, a couple cloves of garlic, and some soy sauce in a food processor, liquify, and it makes a great dippin' sauce.
Tastes best while the cheese is still nice and hot inside.

My wife makes something similar to that but with cream cheese instead of goat cheese. Goes great with marmalade:thumbup:

Are y'all referring to the "apple" co-op?

If not, please provide good directions and/or map to this cheese selling haven. Thank you.

P.S. We need to create a Cheese Fan Club group here... :p

Never mind.

Regards

I logged in to thank the last two posts and that's how much I love garlic. I will one day create an air freshener that smells like garlic cooking in olive oil.

I finally went to the A-Price out Kadena gate 5. Although their cheese selection didn't include brie nor did they have grape seed oil, we'll probably go back for their prepared frozen snackage. We weren't impressed but neither were we terribly disappointed. :)
