Can you hunt on any of the Islands near here? In Korea you could do day hunts for a type of Pheasant on some of the Islands. Just wondering if there is something similar here?

My guess would be no, because of the strictly enforced gun control laws here. There may be a waiver for hunting habu though. heh.

I'm with socal on this one. I don't really know what you could even hunt.

Please don't shoot the bats for fun!

I think you can , Ive heard of farmers hunting boar, but that was a while ago and you can only use shot guns or bows.....not to smart IMHO, but check with the JP's they would know. and gun permits are expensive

Its expensive and the chances of a guyjin getting a license is slim to none! Possibly impossible if your SOFA status. Though it is legal to own a shotgun or rifle in japan the gun and hunting license isnt easy to get and the one who can give it to you would be the prefecture governor. You have to take a long test on safety and you will have to know and be able to recognize all the endangered animals in the area.

Not worth the trouble!

On the Islands in Korea, they provided the gun and you didn't need a permit. You had to pay for a type of license but that was it. I don't have my guns here.

yeah same in Thailand. You could go to an island and shoot some birds. Hunting in japan is seen as more of an animal cruelty then in Korea or Thailand. No to mention those 2 countries you can do anything for money. Japan is a little more refined.

Hunting birds? Around Okinawa?

no, people don't do dat.

Maybe up in the forests of Hokkaido it would be possible.

I don't even think there is anything you could shoot here, as someone else
pointed out.

Licenses are available. When I came to Okinawa on my last tour 92/93, no checks or any inquiries made on my weapons. They past straight thru in my personal effects. They stayed with me, and even when living on Camp Zama in the late 90’s weapons were allowed in base quarters if you were an E4 or above, with a serialized inventory of your weapons kept in the Armory. You can get a license if you are represented by a national (sponsored), but not allowed to own any weapon in SOFA status. Shotguns only!!:old:

Read Below:

The only type of firearm which a Japanese citizen may even contemplate acquiring is a shotgun.[5] Sportsmen are permitted to possess shotguns for hunting and for skeet and trap (p.27)shooting, but only after submitting to a lengthy licensing procedure.[6] Without a license, a person may not even hold a gun in his or her hands.
The licensing procedure is rigorous. A prospective gun owner must first attend classes and pass a written test.[7] Shooting range classes and a shooting test follow; 95 per cent pass.[8] After the safety exam, the applicant takes a simple 'mental test' at a local hospital, to ensure that the applicant is not suffering from a readily detectable mental illness. The applicant then produces for the police a medical certificate attesting that he or she is mentally healthy and not addicted to drugs.[9]
The police investigate the applicant's background and relatives, ensuring that both are crime free. Membership in 'aggressive' political or activist groups disqualifies an applicant.[10] The police have unlimited discretion to deny licenses to any person for whom 'there is reasonable cause to suspect may be dangerous to other persons' lives or properties or to the public peace'.[11]
Gun owners are required to store their weapons in a locker, and give the police a map of the apartment showing the location of the locker. Ammunition must be kept in a separate locked safe. The licenses also allow the holder to buy a few thousand rounds of ammunition, with each transaction being registered.[12]
Civilians may also apply for licenses to possess air rifles--low-power guns that are powered by carbon dioxide rather than by gunpowder.
Civilians can never own handguns. Small calibre rifles were once legal, but in 1971, the Government forbade all transfers of rifles. Current rifle license holders may continue to own them, but their heirs must turn them into the police when the license-holder dies.[13] Total remaining rifle licenses are 27,000.[14] Even shotguns and air rifles, the two legal types of firearm, are becoming rarer and rarer, as few people find it worthwhile to pass through a burdensome gun licensing process. The number of licensed shotguns and air rifles declined from 652,000 in 1981 to 493,373 in 1989.[15]
Although there is no mandatory minimum penalty for unlicensed firearm possession, 81 per cent of sentences for illegal firearm or sword possession are imprisonment for a year or more, perhaps because most gun crimes are perpetrated by professional criminals.[16] The maximum penalty is ten years in prison and a one million yen

I'd be happy with skeet and trap too but prefer hunting. I hate CROWS by the way, pesky bastards... I'm pretty good at shooting a bow so maybe it would be easier to look into that.

There are Cougars EVERYWHERE....for the taking!! You don't even need a license....Just 1 SOFA status ID card.

They are really easy to nail, and the only weapon you'll need is cash for drinks. Once they get a couple drinks, they are a bit more sluggish, and become easier prey!

Be careful though.....Its hard to get that stench out of your clothes after you bag one.....

I think I'll stay away from those Cougars... They aren't my type of prey. They may give me something I really don't want. I only hunt what I plan on eating so I'll leave that one alone :smile4:

I thought you could hunt "snipe" here.:)

Snipe are only around in abundance during their mating season. Usually runs during the first full moon in August. I would advise drinking heavily before hunting any of the various species of snipe. Okinawan Snipe can be somewhat dangerous if provoked. So I would wait till night to hunt them. If you wish to capture some live snipe to keep around the house, make sure you wear bright pink clothing as they are attracted to that color.

Apparently, there are "mudsharks" around to hunt as well.

You need to come see me for your temporary "black" liberty card before you go, though.
