I moved this over from the Meet and Greet forum on the recommendation of some of the replies I got. Seems there may be more old timers over here that might have the answers I am looking for.
I was stationed on Okinawa at Kadena from 1963 to 67, except for some TDY to Nam. Okinawa was and is a beautiful and interesting island. I did a lot of photography while I was there and have been collecting paper items, books, photos, postcards, etc. related to Okinawa during the US possession period from 45 to 72 for a long time now. I have some old photos from the late 40’s - early 50’s that I am trying to get some information about so I thought I would try the forum and see if there were any real old timers out there that may know something about them.
Here are a couple showing a military club, named the Typhoon Terrace. The photos are around 1946-1949, probably closer to 46. Trying to find out what branch of service it might have been and where it was located. Also a better date if someone has it.

I have some other early ones of a USO and some PX’s if anyone is interested, also need some help in figuring out the location and dates for those.
Thanks

No I think these may be from the guy that was selling the photos on Ebay, I just bought the Typhoon Terrace pictures on Ebay and I recognize a lot of the photos as others that were being sold on Ebay.

Hey Don,
Cool photo's:thumbup1: it's a possible that may have been over in the Camp Foster Housing area in what is now the Wing HQ area. Just a guess as we used to find silver coins detecting a site that looks like a building like that could have been on it long ago.

You notice that bar at the end used to be Club Cavern. I remember that from the late 60's. Your later picture (Fire) is after reversion as you can see by the international traffic signs and the road is marked for driving on the left side. That puts it after 1978.

The Club Cavern is the first strip show I saw on Okinawa in Sept. 63. A real good looking chick performed a mock solo self assist conceiled by a fancy scarf, while squirming on the bandstand floor. One of the roads shown beside the club led to an off limits town we used to call "New Koza"

That would have been the road to the right. I used to go to New Koza in 1968-1969. The bars were A-Sign then so not off limits. I just remember the crap drinks made with some kind of phony booze in the American whiskey bottles!

Hey gals and guys. Popped into my head yesterday during one of my "semi lucid" moments with this damn sickness I've got. All you picture AND local history buffs can probably find a MINE of stuff at the local installation History offices. I worked briefly for the History Office at Yokota, and I spent a LOT of time checking out "how things were". Weekend is on us, so file this among things to do when you've got the free time during the week.

From what a friend told me, New Koza was the place to go in the 50's. By 1968 it was the place to stay away from. It was pretty low class compared to BC St.
One of the reasons I drank beer was because of the "Phony Booze". It was safer also. When In Juarez we use to drink beer and it had to be brought to us unopened. With mixed drinks it was easy for them to slip a Micky in it, also you didn't know if the ice was made with good old Mexican tap water and not bottled water. In Vietnam the ice in your drink could contain ground glass.

Ox...here's a starting point. You can ask the Historian here at Yokota for the addresses of those on Okinawa. Let him/her know that you're interested in ALL branches of service, otherwise you'll probably only get a reference for the Kadena Historian.

Hello,
I was a young girl in Okinawa from 1964-1967. My family knew Blackie personally. My dad was also stationed at Kadena AFB. Blackie attended Koza Baptist Church and took many pictures for our church and the families who attended. I have the Okinawan Children in Pictures book still. I have many happy memories living in Okinawa during those years. I attended Mercy Elementary...a school for Americans who lived off base.

Having been there 40 years ago I don't recall the "Black folk" not having fun. Two of the places where they gathered were Koza 4 Corners aka: The Bush, and the Ebb Tide club on the base at Sukiran.
Yes there were some really good looking gals back then. All or most all of the bar girls were Okinawan and many of them were looking for American husbands. Lots of good times to be had. I sure miss those days. I was in the right place at the right time. Damn, it was good.

The pictures seem to out there. It's a challenge to find them though.
Some of the neatest bars were off of the main drag. The GoGo was one of those. Located between Gate 2 and B. C. St. it had a very tiny sign. The inside was made up of psychedelic designs done in day glow paint with black lighting. It's to bad there was no band.

I remember a bar being around the corner and upstairs. I may have been in there once in 1969 which I barely remember because we were drinking Akadama wine and I think it was spiked. I got picked up on BC ST. that night by the Navy Shore Patrol and they worked me over good. Maybe I had it coming! They then dropped me off at a RAFP station in between Gate 2 St. and BC St. The RAFP took me back to my barracks and turned me over to the CQ. I escaped about an hour later and went back to town!
Sorry this was so long!
Anyway that bar was not one of my frequents.

Chief,
The reason I asked was that there was a B52 Maintenance crew chief that I use to talk to at the Kinbasha. He actually told me a lot about the B52 and the SR71 Habu. He filled me in on the B52 crash at Kadena in November 1968. I thought that for just a minute that you and I might have met on Okinawa at the Kinbasha.
Can your wife translate the the Kinbash match box. I actually use to be the one who wrote Bar Kinbash on the match boxes.
Do you remember the Hotel Happiness? The Happiness owner's daughter Imiko married a fellow named Joe Wright. She was a bartender at the Cannon. A nice quite gal.

Ox, I think your B-52 picture is somewhere other than Okinawa. There are 2 D, E or F models (tall vertical stabs) in this picture and the rest of the planes are G models. We never had G models at Kadena and we did not have a ramp where they would be lined up like that. We only had the tall tails and they were parked in revetments due to the bomb loads we carried which typically was 108 bombs.

I sorta wondered about that myself. I don't recall seeing 52's stacked up like that when I drove by Kadena. I thought that might have been a time different from when I was there.

Ox, I know that B-52. Notice there is no tail on it. The engines are also removed. That plane sat next to the fence on the hwy for a long time. There was a fire in the right forward wheel well caused by a brake catching fire. The aircraft was not repairable and was used for parts for a year or so. When all the B-52s left Okinawa, in 1971 I think, this airplane was sold to an Okinawan scrap company and they came in with torches and cut it up in sections and hauled it away. I had stole alot of parts off that plane and watched when it was cut up.

ChiefK,
I think that B52 still had it's tail in 1968. I use to drive by by that B52 on my way to repair Nike Launchers north of Kadena. I always found it interesting that the Okinawan's would farm right up to the fence. I probably saw the gent in the picture.

The Road to Naminoue song was written and recorded by Ronnie Fray, a Canadian now living in Ontario, Canada. Ronnie and his group played in the clubs in the Far East and Okinawa in the late 60's. Below is the history of the song from an email I got from Ronnie.
Ronnie Fray “Road to Namanui” recording history
26 July 2008 Email
Hi Ronnie
HEY DONN
You said you recorded the CD in Detroit, would that mean that "Road" on the CD would be a rerecording of the original song?
YES, THAT IS CORRECT... THERE NEVER WAS A SINGLE 45RPM. IT'S JUST ONE SONG ON AN OLD ALBUM OF MINE CALLED ''WHY NOT'' AND IT'S NOT VERY GOOD.
Did you record the original song in the Far East,
NO, BUT SOMEONE GOT HOLD OF MY ALBUM AND PRESSED A FEW THOUSAND COPIES OF 'ROAD'... WITH 'HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN' BY THE ANIMALS ON THE FLIP SIDE (ON THE LOVE OR HEART RECORD LABEL) AND MADE A FEW BUCKS (I WOULD IMAGINE) ...
where was the record made?
MINE (ALBUM)...IN DETROIT...THE COPY (45rpm)....IN OKINAWA (I GUESS)
Do you have a copy of the original record?
I DO HAVE THE ALBUM (ONE ONLY). I USUALLY BURN A C.D. OF IT IF SOMEONE WANTS/ORDERS IT.. BECAUSE I HAVE IT LOADED INTO MY COMPUTER...ALONG WITH FOUR OTHER C.D.'S OF MINE. (ONE IS LIVE AT THE BAVARIAN INN ...IN G.R.)
What inspired you to write the song?
HA HA...WHA'DYA TINK?
MY FIRST TRIP TO NAHA IN '67/8..WE HAD A WONDERFUL TIME....
I CAME BACK TO GRAND RAPIDS ...WROTE AND RECORDED THE SONG.. IN 1968/9 WENT BACK TO OKI THE THIRD TIME AND HEARD IT ON THE RADIO...
I ALMOST SH#@... I WAS BOTH PISSED OFF AND HAPPY AT THE SAME TIME...
I HAD A HIT RECORD IN OKINAWA AND I DIDN'T MAKE A DAMN DIME!!!
That’s the story of the Road to Naminoue song, below is a link to a Japanese video which shows the 45 pirated record.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZxTbGnK-uA&feature=related
Video shows the 45 record in a jukebox on Okinawa about 2000?? House of the Rising Sun on the reverse.

Can I ask a (possibly dumb question)?
During the 50s and 60s was it only dollars that were used on Okinawa, or was there the yen, too sort of being used in parallel?

I'm not sure when the change over from MPC to Dollas occured. I beleive it must have been sometime in the late 50's. The MPC shown was from 1955. When I was on Okinawa in the late 60's we used American dollars, no Yen.

It was green. Many of the roads and streets were still dirt roads once you got off of the main roads. There were still many houses with grass roofs and TV antenna's sticking out of them.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/Oxmix/Army/Okinawa/Gate2Street3.jpg
There were wooded areas even within the cities. I remember one such area close to Sukiran, on the side of the road. The area was thick with what looked like sumack and homeless people were actually living there.
Here is what it looked like across the street from the barracks. At first I thought that there might have been a par 3 golf course there, note golf ball, but then, having given it some thought, I have come to the conclusion that Okinawa must have been the location where the 1960's tv series The Prisoner was shot. I'm sure this is the same white sphere that chased down #6 any time he tried to escape from the "Village".

I remember when there was only one of the "golf balls" also. As kids, we joked that it was King Kong's golf ball or ping pong ball. There are three there now... part of Fort Buckner Army Signal Battalion, I believe.

Cool pic!! I used to work in that golf ball. :D That particular one has been gone for nearly 15 years but was replaced with another in '94 or '95. It was an old AN/MSC-46 satellite terminal, which technically, was mobile (although, not quite tactical!). All of the comm. equipment was housed in semi truck trailers and the antenna was designed to be taken town and trailered away.
Here's what the inside of one of the semi trailers looked like:

That last pic reminded me when a friend and i were in iwakuni and he was sitting with this bar girl.. I kept trying to think why she had all this white paste on her face and her head was as big as a bowling ball. Then one of the other girls at the joint said, "that's not a she, it's a he"@! :-|
I tried to tell him, but he was getting something special under the table and wouldn't listen to me.
I have the pic somewhere, i'll have to scan it and put it up, even though it's early 80's and not the date of this thread

I met a gal up in Kin Village. She really had heavy white makeup on. I told her I thought that there was a pretty face under all of that white makeup. She told me that she thought that ll American's liked that style makeup. I told her that I didn't care for it myself. I stopped back a week later and was greeted by a gal in the same bar. She looked at me and said you don't recognize me without my white makeup do you? I smiled at her and said "I knew that there was a pretty face under all of that makeup". I interpreted her reaction to my telling her she was pretty as something that she had not heard before without her makeup.
She was no he. :grin1:

Here are a few photos done by Bert Mosher in the late 40's to early 50's, he sold them in packs of 10 to GI's. Later on he opened American Photo Service, sold out and went back to the states in 1957.

All of these pictures and coments bring back great memories. I was stationed in Okinawa from 1969 to 1973, 1976to 1979 and 1987 to 1990. Iwas on the SAC and Tac side of the base. I lived in Barracks 114 my first time in Oki and the next time i llived in base housing on Kadena. I'm having some old 8mm film put on disk as soon as I get it done I up load to this site.

Hey Oxmix,
I've got one of those Coke cans too from Okinawa! Though I don't remember them with a design on them like you got. In my picture, the one on the right is from here in the states now as I just wanted to give people and idea of the shape. I had two of these cans I bought in 1977 in Okinawa before my wife and I left. We never opened them and through the years, one rusted and leaked out which got thrown away but this one didn't leak out nor rust out. However, the fluid that was inside is gone? Thanks for the many pictures you upload, they help in trying to remember the days that most wish we could go back to. Except for that license plate, that was the year I was born:grin1:

Hey spec4
Do you remember a bar on BC st. called Club Lucky?
The outside was painted pink.
It was at the top of BC, not far from where that dept. store is now.
Did you buy that coke can from one of the vending machines?

Hi Jimbob,
Sorry, I don't remember any bar. It could be that I had just married before going to Okinawa and was Hell Bent on bringing my wife over. The can's of Coke it seems I remember coming out of a small shop with them and it was sunny. I do remember opening a cooling box to grab the can's though, however, don't remember much more about it than that. I think it was just a matter of days before my wife and I were due to leave Okinawa aka "The Rock" and I was thinking more on the states than there.

Hi Ox,
As always I enjoy your pics and posts. Just wanted to let you know that I've had an inquiry from the Endeavor Talent Agency (Beverly Hills, CA) regarding the availability of book rights for my novel, "B.C. Street." Hopefully, there will be a movie made based on the book in the not too distant future. I read the comment about being in the right place at the right time. I do think Okinawa and B.C. Street were a true paradise for U.S. GIs in the '60s. Glad I was there, will never forget it. . . E. A. (Ed) Cooper

Hi Ed,
Good to hear from you. It's been too long.
Looks like you got some good news.
I sure hope that they make a movie out of your book. Remember, if there is a movie deal, i want to be a technical adviser. :grin1:
Okinawa made it worth being drafted. If more people had known about Okinawa they would have volunteered for the draft. :grin1:
I was lucky, I was stationed at 2 of the Army's best kept secrets, McGregor Range and Okinawa.
There were a couple guys from my home town that were on Okinawa at the same time as me. I lost track of both of them.
One fellow was drafted at the same time, went through basics at Ft. Campbell in a different Company and I didn't see him again until I was on the plane coming back to the States. He was Air Defense Artillery and was stationed on Tokashiki. I wish I had know that. We could have had a lot of fun together. I actually knew him before we were drafted.
The other fellow was a good guy. His bunk was the next one down from mine. He was married and made the choice not to do the bar scene. He actually looked me up after he got back from Okinawa.

Ed, The whole time I was reading your book I felt that I was back in the 60's on Okinawa. You did an excellent job of recreating life on Okinawa back then. You need to continue the story. The way you ended your book left me wanting more, wishing that it could be the first of many of books dealing with intimate life of those of us who served on Okinawa and Okinawa itself during the Vietnam War, and the Cold War. It's a story that needs to be told before we fade away.

I agree with you. The people were great. I never felt that the majority of the people disliked us. Even the rioters in 1969 didn't bother me when I had to cross their lines. I'd smile and wave at them and they would smile and wave back and motion me through. Had I felt differently about the Okinawan people then I probably would not be on this forum and Okinawa probably would have been a bad memory.
It sounds like Okinawa today has more problems than they did back then. It's probably caused by the stress of having to drive on the wrong side of the road, having to use those toilets that are nothing more than a hole in the floor and not using the Dollar as the only authorized currency. I know that would stress me out. :D

Could you confirm the date in the picture here please?
The date says on the Oki-Mar reads August 8, 1978 correct?
If that's correct then it took over 6 years from the revision to get the island back to driving the way the rest of the country was driving here. That must have been an pretty interesting time for drivers who came here from mainland.

I have a friend who was a electrician on oki when they changed the driving to left side. Many accidents!

hey OX, fyi the Royal restaurant in front of tori has closed and they in process of tearing down/renovating the building, it moved down the street a ways, The road the leads up the hill to the old Yomitan Airfield, is lined with houses and there are several super expensive apt buildings there now. Now I have question fro you old timers.................if you were ever out at Tori, there is a restaurant called fishermans wharf, I believe it was an old club NCO or O club type, but I also heard rumors that it was a seaplane base there....do any of you have any info on that

I was in Oki when they change the driving pattern. Yes the rodes were closed a midnight and strated driving on the oposite side of the road the next morning. Mybe some people forgot, but when all of this was taking place we were under typhoon condition 2 or 1. So their wasn't a big proble with traffic on the road the next day. To be honest I think the major cause of accidents were caused by the local bus drivers. I drove from Futema everyday to Kadena for work and I never saw that many accidents.

I have a question and I am not sure who can help. My grandpa was stationed in okinawa sometime in the 1950s, his name is Robert Brooks. He was stationed at Naja Airforce base which I am told is now Kadena base. I am looking for anyone who knows him or may know of him. he was in the airforce and the navy. he met my grandmother there in okinawa and she was part of the Kubota family. She had my dad there in okinawa in 1952, but we are not sure which hospital and we do not know where his birth certificate is. The reason I am looking for information is because my grandfather is not my dads real dad. he adopted my dad in Japan a few years after he was born. I am trying to find information on my dads biological father. My grandmother past away in January and it was a great dishonor for her to be pregnant and not with the father and her family disowned her. She would never talk about my dads biological father. All we know is his first name was Mark, he was stationed in Okinawa between 1950 - 1955?? He was a quarter Canadian and three quarters japanese. My grandmothers name is Hatsue Kubota and her sister, Naruko, married a George Murphy who was also stationed in Okinawa at the same time. George and my grandpa are believed to know who my dad's dad is, but won't say. i'm not sure what I would do if I were to find out who he is really is, but there is a part of me that wants to know my history and to help give my dad some closure. If anyone has any information about these people or even how to find birth certificates from 1952, I would appreciate it. You can email me at jenniferbrock23@yahoo.com if you have any information and do not feel like posting this. I am serious about this and it is not a joke. I just want my family to be complete.

Chances are you will never get the answers you seek. :crying: In 1968 I tried to help a young Okinawa girl locate her father. All I had to go on were some old letters sent to her mother written more than a decade earlier. I came up dry.
I hope someone out there can help.

I train military dogs on Okinawa out on the old WWII air field called Yomitan back in the 1960's. I am trying to locate the guys who posted the photos on the "Okinawa 40's and 50's section. But to tell the truth I am having a hard time doing so as this is my first attempt to contact people through a forum.

Do you remember where this tug of war was held?
My grandmothers name is Hatsue Kubota and her sister,
I hate to be the one that increases the parameters of your search here but the name Kubota is not a Okinawan family name.
The name Kubota suggests that she was either from mainland, or her father was. Again I apologize.
Back then I would make a guess that her family was either former Japanese military or a part of the mainland civil administration that came here prior to WWII and were not able to return right away to mainland right after the war ended.
Got a photo last Friday leaving Torii... I bet there were a lot of mammaries in that place!

Afraid I can not tell you where the tug of war was, I got the photos from the estate of a GI that was in the Rycom Signal Service in 54-55, I am trying to find out myself but not quite enough indicators other than it appears to be out in the countryside someplace, not the city areas.

Here are a couple of pictures you might find interesting to go along with the ones you just posted.
Papasans day is done. This one is the same papasan, but the pose, clothes, and view are a little different from the normal one that everyone sees. This was done before the regular one, probably sometime between 1950 and 1952.
http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss189/DesertDonn/ksab%20papasan/pcpapasan.jpg
KSAB original studio taken by Blackie the Photographer and published in This Month on Okinawa April 1958 supplement issue. Looks like it goes with the cake dedication photo which reads April 1958. This must have been the studio that burned down in the newspaper article.

The AF mess hall looks very similar the the mess hall at the SAC AB in Lincoln Nebraska, except that they had a western mural on the wall. I was there in 1959 touring the base for 2 days.

I wonder which barracks this is? I lived in 110,114,120. This could be 110 or 114.After looking again, I see stadium lights behind it which could be the football field and track which would make it 114.

OK, that makes sense especially with the lights behind it. I think that is where the HABU guys (9th) stayed or maybe they were in 106.

Ox,
The photos of the radio station is still used as the supply building located on Okuma near the new military dormitory. I worked out of that building from 2002-2005 and will try to get a photo of it this weekend to post. The retired MLC employees will go nuts when I show these to them! Thanks!!!!!

It would help a heck of a lot to know what the Hwy's are numbered today to get the pics that you are looking for.
For example Hwy 1 is now National Hwy 58 and Hwy 30 is now Prefectural HWY 81.
Here are some links to rather current pictures of scenery from Hwy 58 (Hwy 1) here in Okinawa today.
THey go from Naha to Kunigami in the north.
The explainations are in Japanese but you should be able to get a great idea of what it looks like today from them. Here is one from there that should be obvious to where is came from....Here is the link (http://road.s25.xrea.com/hwy58.html)...
http://road.s25.xrea.com/f15in58.jpg
Go to this link for links to pretty much current pictures of places all over the island. Unfortunately the link connects only to a page in Japanese but if you scroll down the page and hit the blue highlighted links you will get some great pictures from roads here in Okinawa (http://road.s25.xrea.com/index.html)

Here is some additional info that I have that may help in locating some of the roads it’s the best I can do as I have not been on Okinawa since the mid 60’s.
I met with a couple of friends that were on Okinawa in the late 50’s early 60’s, one was in telephone outside services and spent a lot of time driving around the island. We were able to figure out a few of the less obvious ones but others were really just parts of the roads that would be anyones guess as to where.
I then went to Google Earth and as usual a lot of the areas I wanted to check were cloud covered so that was useless. Google maps were useful in some cases even though the road numbers have changed.
Best we could come up with are as follows.
Hwy 5 at Awase and Hwy 1 and 30 at Oyama are no problem.
Hwy 1 we think is at an intersection with a road from the Machinato Service Area to Hwy 1, we think the road is now gone, but use to be at the green arrow location on the 1959 topo map that is below.
http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss189/DesertDonn/oki%20roads/1959ARMYMAPSERVICETOPOMAPcopy.jpg
Hwy 30 toward Awase should be easy, you can see Oguwa-Saki (don’t know what it is called now), Awase Beach (it use to be called NiceO Beach in the early 50’s) and the Katsuren Penninsula (White Beach) in the background.
The two Hwy 13’s could be anyplace along 13.
The Hwy 40 photos are probably along this stretch of 40 between the Okinawa Hotel and Shuri (1960’s roadmap)
http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss189/DesertDonn/oki%20roads/1971CALTEXBACK.jpg
Hope some of this helps, good luck.

Here are a couple additional maps from 1956 with the estimated photo locations marked along with what I believe are today’s road numbers.
What I got off Google maps is as follows:
Hwy 1 is 58
Hwy 30 is 81
Hwy 5 is 330
Hwy 13 is 329
Hwy 40 is 29
At least it looks that way to me but if you are driving around Okinawa now you would know better than me if I got them right.
The information on the original posted 1955 photos is all that was written on the backs of the photos so that is all I have to go by.

This is Hwy 13 is 329 (http://okinawa.s53.xrea.com/road/r329e.htm)......and this....... (http://okinawa.s53.xrea.com/road/r329d.htm)

I took a look at the link to the Okinawa roads website and there are some great pictures there, but I had trouble trying to compare them to the 1955 photos mainly because a lot of the 55 photos were taken at an elevated level above the roads. Also they were more wide angle in some cases. The website photos were street level and somewhat close up, of course with all the new buildings over the last 54 years everything is now close up. That is what makes it an interesting challenge today. But I will keep looking through the website photos and see what might match up.
I did do some more looking at Google Earth and found a part of Hwy 29 between the red arrows that resembles one of the Hwy 40 photos.

I guess that is just to be expected. Hell I can tell you that there are some areas here now that have changed so much over the past 20 years that they are unrecognizable as well.
Progress I guess.:scratchchin:

The barracks were at Sukiran. you can also see Stillwell Field House in the lower center. Here is a picture from another angle. The red arrow is the 44th Ordnance.
You can see the stadium where the 1968 Bob Hope Christmas show was held. To the left of the stadium is the track that I ran on.

In the photo "Army Barracks" here is what I remember from February 1960. The parking lot entrance at the bottom right (building not shown) was the Army's Provost Marshal Office (my first work sight as a clerk and home to the Ryukyuan Armed Services Police (RASP). Going up the road on the right side is the USA MP Group barracks, the Woman's Army Crops (WAC) Detachment, the USA Signal Group (my second job as Company Clerk). I do not recall the next building on the left. Across the street is the Ebb Tide enlisted club followed by the USA Med Group Sukiran dispensary. The last building on the right is the future home of the US Army Military Police Group (everything became consoldiated into this building in mid 1960). In 1960, the road on the left was 2 lane (this is a more up-to-date photo), after the Army MP barracks was the Armed Forces Police barracks. Third building unknown. The next group of buildings (triangle appearance) was the 5th Special Forces Group area. This photo sure brought back a lot of good memories of my frist tour on Okinawa in the Sukiran area.

Hey oxmix, you didn't happen to ever be stationed at a nike site in Hammond Indiana did you?
No my stateside duty was in the desert at McGregor Range, annex to Fort Bliss. I repaired the Nike launchers so that missiles could be launched, and repaired any damage done after annual service practice launches.
McGregor was great duty. The Army treated us very good.

The Naha site was known as site #8. I spent a fair amount of time there making repairs.
I never liked going there simply because of an MP guard, Sgt. Law. If your out there Law, you were one big prick.
This A Hole's sole purpose in life was to screw with people. I'm sure all of you have run into one of these people.
We were never issued flight line passes to cross the Naha airfield to get to Site #8. Our constant request for passes went unanswered. A little ingenuity made it possible for us to get to site #8.
One day Sgt. Law wanted to see my flight line pass. I tried the old routine #6 but it didn't work. This A Hole is now going to call the flight line MP's and have me arrested.
I unloaded on him. "How many times have you seen me?" "I'm sick of your $hit. I go through your security checks to get on the Pad and once I'm there some a$$hole calls a drill and I have leave the Pad and go back for another security check, then when the drill is over you say I can go back on the Pad but first I have to go through another security check. This $hit happens 3 or 4 times every time I come here. A simple 1 hour job takes me all day, because I'm constantly unloading and loading up my gear and going through security checks each time. $hit man we have been sitting in the same room looking at each other for the last 10 minutes, what's changed?""Do I look like a Commie to you?" "Well do I?" "You people call me because your site is down." "F**k you and the MP's I'm leaving" "Call someone else to repair your site, and by the way if that gate isn't open by the time I get in my truck, I'll drive right through it."
They open the gate. I wasn't bluffing either. I drove back to the shop expecting the MP's to be there to arrest me. Still hot under the collar I told my section chief about what happened. In the blink of an eye he was on the phone reaming someones a$$. Because of this incident, our Section got the flight line passes and I never had to go to site #8 again.
The best part is that I didn't get in trouble over the incident.

Here's an old concrete Highway 40 sign I've collected. I always thought it was from the highway 40 in Hokaido, but you have finally made it clear that it is now highway 29. Thanks!

Wow, 3 Ordnance vans. I can't imagine what kind of problem they got going on there. We never sent more than 1 vehicle to a site. There was nothing that I and my 3 guys couldn't handle.

Notice the cannon to the right? Well some of the guys decided to move the cannon up the road to the company area and place it just outside the CO's office window with the barrel pointing at him. It wasn't a prank, it was a message to the CO to clean up his act or else. The $hit flew that day.
I know what your thinking. The answer is No. It wasn't me. I have no idea who did it. Those who did it stayed tight lipped. They never did find out who did it.

Ox: Thanks for the great photos of Nike areas. I know this is not associated with the "Okinawan" items, but after seeing the numerous Nike photos, began to wonder if you had ever been assinged to the Direct Support Platoon, 4th Bn, 44th ADA, Camp Humphries, ROK. I was Bn Personnel Sgt, Mar 69 - Apr 70.

No I wasn't. One of my friends at McGregor was sent to Korea. I don't know what unit he was assigned to. Did you by chance ever know a Ray Hudnut?
