i work outside and at night and half of the time im running my ass off from the weirdest bugs ever. well for one theres a gross infestation of what i think is cicadas. there everywhere! one question about them though...why do they randomly seem to just drop dead? they fall to there backs and when you think there dead, you kick them and they get right back up and freak out! whats the deal with that!?
the most strange bug though ( and i cant find this on any website ) is a bug that looks half grasshopper half roach. its got a long thin body and can bite, it can also fly at times, but usually its walking on the ground. honestly it looks like a crawfish in a bug like way....what is it? i feel like im in the movie "the mist" lol.
can any of you guys answer these questions?

Cicadas are harmless. Cicadas do not bite. They hatch from ground as a grubish looking thing and then hatch into the flying form. Cicadas are my favorite bug. Noisy but harmless :D

Interesting they only come out in force every 17 years in the US.

There are "yearly" (shorter brood spans) varieties that come out that are much different than the 17 year brood. Cicada Mania mainly is focusing on the big 15 year brood hatchings lately. Next brood hatch for MI (where we are from) for the "Magicicada" 17 year brood is 2021 and 2024...:crying: They came out the year we PCS'd and we left before the hatch.
Fascinating bugs really. They have no real purpose other than to mate, die, make noise, and feed other animals. We had fun watching them hatch in the summer as kids and even as adults. :grin1:

I remember being 13 or so, riding my BMX and getting nailed in the head by them every 5 minutes. If my forehead attracted them so well then, it would be a much easier target now since it got bigger. :old:

yeah but i was wondering why they just out of nowhere fall to the ground as if there dead, they lay there for hours but the second you touch them they jump right back up and freak out
I'm sure this isn't the same bug but I hate the round, green and black, flying beetle, space ship type bugs that show up every summer here and aint scared of shit! Swat 'em all you want, they'll keep comin back for more! Annoying ****ers - about as annoying as the no doubt young jar heads who occasionally scream their heads off like wild animals for obviously no other reason than the alcohol told them to, as they are doing right now in "my neighborhood" !

I love cicadas! The noise is soothing and reminds me that summer is here!

Semi (蝉;せみ) is the basic name for cicadas, aburazemi is the large brown variety, scientific name Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata (油蝉; 鳴蜩;あぶらぜみ).

I hate f-in semi. There are different strands of semi, each come out on a different yearly cycle, which is why you see them every year. The worst I ever seen them though is in TN, they come out around the Nashville area IN FORCE. I mean a whole tree, if bumped, will explode in semi like the plague. Ugh!!

haha, no i dont believe its a praying mantis. ive seen those before in the states. this bug litterally looks like a brown, more bug like crawfish. but for a better description: its got a thin, brown, shell like body and is about 2 inches long. but when you look closely at it youll notice its head is really small and when we put a lead pencil to it. it latched onto it! ive never seen one in the states and i checked some okinawa bug sites and diddnt see it there either. there pretty mean little guys and seem to only come out at night. i work on a flightline and good lord this place is INFESTED with bugs.

You already got your answer. Google cicada images and see for yourself. They come out in force every year for a few weeks. Hatch, then drop to the ground and die. Kids here love playing with them, picking them from the trees and walking around with them. You'll see kids all over the place with nets and little bug cases daily now.
