View Full Version : Who else hates Torii Station?

Hmm? There is nothing to do here and you have to drive for 20 minutes to the PX on Kadena. With fuel prices $4 now its probably $12 per trip in my Toyota Surf. And we need free japanese language lessons at night here like they have at other bases. I dont know what the rules are for bringing a girlfriend onto other bases but for god sake we cant even have them stay the night. I for one... hate Torii Station. Anyone concur/rebut?

Well at least Tori is not as overcrowded as camp Kadena, You have a nice beach at walking distance. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think any dorm/barrack residents on island are allowed to have overnight guest maybe SNCO's/Officers? Sell the Surf and buy something smaller and cheaper on gas or hang on to it until it blows a head gasket and sets you back 2K or so. Tori can't be that bad:scratchchin:
I wouldn't want to live on Torii, but I always found it to be nice and laid back. There's a few bars right outside the gate, too, aren't there?

I have nothing against the base, or it's people. Nice beach area, but the club seriously sucks.

Uh, so what base can you have a Japanese girl stay the night? I'm assuming you are in the barracks...?

I love the beach there! :D
That's pretty much the only time I've been there though. You can't keep any visitors on base past midnight. That's all bases bro. Well...at least it's that way on Marine bases.

Some of the stands that we used to visit still give us some freebies. They don't remember the wife, but they seem to remember me. And all I did, was walk around in the road to have a smoke.
Perhaps they had a bet going about how long it would take for me to be hit by traffic.:D

All one ever gave me was an unexploded mortar shell. Actually he threw it at me, and I nearly crapped my pants.

No, I called the fire department and they picked it up. If it was just the casing or something, I would have kept it, but it was still live and rusty.

You probably won't have a s much difficulty getting a job as a network administrator being a local hire. It seems there are tons of IT jobs over in Japan but no one wants to hire from the USA. I am a systems administrator with nearly 20 years of experience, but getting a job in OKinawa has been like pulling teeth for me.
It seems like everybody and their brother is a network/systems administrator over here.

A few years ago, I got asked if I wanted to transfer over to an IT job on Kadena while I was working as a weldor. They just needed someone to fill the position.

Tell me about it. Ten years ago there wasn't that many and I had so many job offers (and a swolen head due to it because I figured that I had leverage). Now IT folks are a dime a dozen even here in the jolly good ol' US of A.

I think I would have stuck with welding. As far as I know, the field is not being flooded like the IT field is. If I wasn't already at the age where I am less desirable to be hired (a number companies candidly admit that they would not hire anyone over 40) I would definitely get into a new line of work that was not so inundated with people.

Actually, weldors are sought after overseas. In Europe and Australia in particular, skills involving an intership or apprenticeship are in high demand. Medical, machining, and welding skills are needed.

Welder is a difficult trade to learn. If you are good, you can write your own ticket....if you are bad...you can still find work.

Sssshhhhhhhh!!! Don't tell too many people or else this field will become overpopulated. After all, they were saying almost the same thing about the IT field ten years ago, which is why the field got flooded and we have become a dime a dozen.

Being good at IT and being a good welder are two different things. Welder is a true skill that one must learn and cultivate over time...Not saying that IT isn't a skill, but welders need to be able to work by feel too.
Administration is boring. Development = excitement. :D
Um... there's a lot of "feel" in IT as well.

Back on topic though....never stationed on Torrii, but I lived outside the gate there for 2 years. Love the area, nice little base, nice beach, all very close. And being at Torrii now is much better than it was 7 years ago when Yomitan had absolutely nothing!

Well I lived there from 94 until 99 and didn't really care for it. THere was the Soba place, the ramen place, and a bunch of snack bars.:grin1:
Unfortunately for me at the time all my friends liked to hang out in Okinawa city. Which was either a long drive or an expensive taxi ride home for me.:cursing:

That's the one thing I could never figure out about Yomitan snack bars. All the girls that worked in them actually lived in Yomitan, well 98% of them.
You go to an Oki city snack bar and most of the girls in there are from Kadena, Ginowa, Guishikawa... go to a Ginowan snack and all the girls are from Naha, Oki city, Nakagusuku... etc.. etc...

Well, I truly kind of think all the bases are exactly the same. I rarely shop at the PX or BX and never go to the clubs on base, although I hear Super Ladies Night is a nice thing to take in with the eyes.
The only thing I really use the base for is Subway and video rental, which BTW, why doesn't AAFES receive ALL DVD releases that get released in the states? I do get lucky sometimes and find movies at Book Box that never made it on base but were released in the states.
Any time outside the gate is a good time! IMO

There is some king of lawsuit with one of the studios. Has been going on for about 1 1/2 years now.
Aafes doesn't sell their movies anymore. Don't ask me the studio name or details though.

I think torii station is nice because of the beach and it being on base. But i do agree that there is little else on that base.

Beach is nice.
Torri's real appeal is the faster ID card making office thingy.
In and out, 20 minutes.
Resetting my CAC card/getting a new ID has never been so easy.
And yes I've had to do it more than once. -.-

I like Torii Station;
Good:
Swiming pool is Awesome!
Quiet
Nice beach (as many pointed out)
Torii Beach Fest is great, (Do they still have it?)
No "Got to tuck your shirt in your jeans" rule :D
The spa, weight room is way less crowded most all the time.
Scuba Locker is way more personal, I know Jason and Justin E.
10th ASG HQ is great, like someone pointed out, I.D. Card is fast.
The running track / perimeter road is great, love to run past the of post school at the one corner and shout cadence calls at the kids, that was fun!
Torii does not have as many rules as other installations, so that is a plus +
Bad:
The club has had issues for years, but that is because they have no population to help keep it going, I say close it down and put in a food court.
I heard there is a new road to take either to the back gate or the front, that is good.
NO PX, BX
there are bound to be more, but in the first post, agree, for a single guy Torii is not good IF you don't want to get into the Japan Culture, which I think you should and then you'll be glad you are on Torii :D
Peace!:)

I normally go in though the back gate when I go to torii. Just take 58 north towards torii and turn left at the second signal past the McDonalds. It's the signal that is also for kadena gate 4. There will be a koban on the corner of this intersection. Continue down this road until it splits off left and down a hill, make sure you take this left. You'll know you went the right way because you'll cross over a red bridge. Continue on this road until you pass the new starbucks and aeon shopping center on your left. You will turn left soon after passing the starbucks. There will be a signal after you pass starbucks, go straight past this signal and turn left at the next street you can turn at. Continue down this road and the torii back gate will be at the end of this street on your right. However, if you want to go though the front gate don't turn left after the signal after the starbucks. Continue on straight until that road comes to a T intersection and turn left. Stay on this road and you'll eventually come across torii's front gate.
Sorry if my directions are kinda confusing. Someone else can explain it as well if you'd like.
