MANSFIELD, La. (AP) - An ATM at a northwest Louisiana truck stop gave out $20 bills instead of $5s, but authorities say they know who took the extra $7,000 the machine spit out and plan to track them down.
DeSoto Parish sheriff's Lt. Toni Morris said the automated teller machine has records showing 26 people who received the extra cash during five days in late June and early July.
Annette Parker, a supervisor at Eagle's Truck Stop, said she unplugged the machine after overhearing conversations about the excess payments.
"The next morning when we had come back in, someone had plugged it back up," she said.
Morris said someone who did not work at the truck stop may have rigged the machine, which keeps records of when the money was taken and by whom.
Morris said charges could be brought against the people who got more money than they were debited for.

While it may not have been the most honest thing to do, is it their fault that the ATM machine screwed up and gave out more money then it should have? Perhaps charges should be brought against the person responsible for the upkeep of the machine.
I can't say I wouldn't try to capitalize on the machine as well had I known.

I used to play a lot of monopoly, and this is what I would call "bank error in your favor!"
But...sometimes ATM's are owned by individuals, or small companies, and not the bank. Being that this is a truck stop, the bank isn't out any money, it is the owner of the machine that lost out. I suspect though that the banks would help out by tracking down who received what, and try to help recoup the money.
As much as those ATM owners are ripping people off with their machines though, I don't have a lot of pity for them...I mean $3-$5 per transaction is pretty damn stiff if you ask me!

I didn't know ATMS still gave out 5 dollar bills.
Honestly who really wouldn't keep the money?

I think that I'd return the money because I don't think I'd like to deal with the consequences, however I did take JU School For Criminals, I think I might be able to get away.

LOL!!! Good one!
I would think they could just charge your account for the correct amt, which could really screw you over more than flat out going after you.
Just think- correct amt pulled
you continued over the coming days to debit or write checks.....those start bouncing, fees from bank, fees from institutions you screwed, late payments on house & other bills (being it was the end of the month and lots of bills due on the 1st. Could really be a mess.
Read somewhere there was possibly a camera, so they could be caught on tape asides from bank records

Yeah, a lot of people get caught that way with the cameras you see those tiny mirrors on the ATM? Those would be cameras, lol.
Yeah I'd be screwed over on them just pulling it from my account...so I guess I'll just continue to return money if it ever comes out of the ATM, but it'd be nice to have that kind of money handed to you, I'd like to do a bit more modifying on my car. :D
