My fiancé has decide to move out to Okinawa for the remainder of my contract and to pursue teaching. She has her TESL cert and just graduated from college with a degree in English. So finding work shouldn’t be too hard, but getting an apartment is seeming to be difficult for non sponsored. Looking for something under 100,000 yen/month near Foster for the two of us. Will be in her name to avoid paying more and can be small; even furnished. Anyone who maybe teaches that doesn’t have anything to do with the military have any suggestions as far as housing and maybe even jobs would help.

Check with Koza Housing, Central, Tomiya etc, they should have non-base inspected places for rent in that range. But don't just settle for the listed price and no base-inspection type places. I am currently renting a based-approved duplex unit for 80,000 yen a month, that was listed as 125,000. (I'm a civilian contractor). The agency will probably required her employer to sponsor her.

Also, if you have a good Okinawan friend, he/she can co-sign a lease. I have previously rented an apartment through a Japanese housing agency that didn't deal with the base, which required my friend's Okinawan wife to co-sign the lease.

Good luck

I lived in a hotel for 40,000 Yen a month. I didn't need a contract or anything. Just a japanese friend to help me talk to the owner. Then I asked around and I found a friend of a friend that was going on deployment and I stayed at his house while he was gone. Perhaps you could ask around for people that are deploying. It could be a mutual beneficial arrangement.

if you want a place for under 1K per month, ask them to show you all the places for 1k-1300. pick the one you like, and offer them 900.

i shot a full 40,450Y under and they took it, i moved in the next day. remember the housing agency is on YOUR side.
