I have started a yahoo group, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Okinawa_restaurants/

It lists many restaurants around Okinawa, click messages everything is in English including menus, prices, info, and more. Click join to see pics of food, restaurants and maps. :D

Feel free to post restaurants out, or email me to check restaurants out!! Oh and the restaurants we go to are where there are NO Y plates! No military people! I have noticed there is a big difference when you go to the places like CoCo's vs places like Big Dai Chan (spelling ?). You are treated different, service is different. When you go back to the same restaurant and they notice you as a repeat customer, they like that and notice it. My kids get free food from the Japanese restaurants that we go to on a regular basis. The owners come out and meet/greet you each time you eat there!

I was only on Okinawa for 3 months but I did venture out quite a bit to sample the local cuisine. Not everyone I work with felt the same as me so a lot of times I traveled solo. After I while I came to realize that when I traveled alone or with one other person the local shop & restaurant owners were more outgoing & friendly. I seemed to have better a better experience with the people of Okinawa when I was by myself. I'm a big fan of the gyoza & soba. Many times did I travel down to American Village to sit outside soak up the sights & chow down at the outdoor soba shop.

Best advice here is look for the places where taxi drivers stop and eat. They are called "shoku-do", mostly small places that serve good food at a cheap price, with decent volume as well. However choice is limited to Okinawan food.

Btw, they are all over the place if you look, many are not on the "main" roads but rather off the beaten trail.

I suggest going to Karubi Daiyo for good yaki niku. It's in okinawa city and fairly easy to get to. All you do is go out gate 2 and keep going straight and go down the big hill. At the light at the bottom of the hill, go right. Stay on this road, for about 3 blocks, until you come to a light with a mcdonalds on the left corner, you will pass a pachinko parlor on you right. Turn left at that light by the mcdonalds and karubi daiyo is on this street on the right side about 2 blocks down. It's pretty easy to spot, the sign is a big chili pepper. It has to be my favorite yaki niku place on this island! There is also another good one about a block before karubi daiyo, but I can't remember the name.

I don't know any places around Futenma, but there is a kick-ass Thai place near kadena called Som Chai. It is very small, cramped & no frills, but the food is fresh. Richard the owner works out of a small open kitchen right behind the counter & he can suit any dish to your suit your spiciness needs.
Hit me up if you'd like to check it out.

There is this old couple on Gate 2 street that operate out of the 2nd floor. They serve the best chinese dumplings you have ever tasted! There was a story done about them several years ago. It's been 2 years since I went there...need to go see if they are still alive and kicking!
