HONOLULU - Federal officials have confirmed what biologists have long thought: The Caribbean monk seal has gone the way of the dodo (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080607/ap_on_sc/monk_seal_extinction).

Humans hunting the docile creatures for research, food and blubber left the population unsustainable, say biologists who warn that Hawaiian and Mediterranean monk seals could be the next to go.

No problem. Like the whales, they compete with our fisheries' industries.

Better off without 'em. So long and thanks for all the fish.

The last confirmed sighting of a Caribbean monk seal was in 1952 between Jamaica and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service confirmed Friday that the species is extinct.
Hummmm a little slow in collecting the facts

Dougie Adams writes som fun tripe, "ode to the small lump of green jelly I found in my armpit one mid-summers morn" , but i luvs the sea creatures. If they had an old school "Champion Fight" where the biggest guy from one army fights the biggest guy from another army, I would be right there. Beating the tar out of peeps that disrespect the sea and its creatures. No, I'm not the biggest, or the strongest, or even the fastest, but i am one of the toughest S.O.B.'s around. And the hurtings will be had by mine foes. For real Just point me in the direction of who to pummel.

I'm not sure if you're aware of it, but the velociraptor is now extinct as well. The difference, though, is a big rock was most likely at fault for that one.

So long monk seal.

lol. Sounds like you've got your Sea Shepherd duffel bag packed and headed up the gangway, Sex. Or maybe just back from a long voyage.

Give my best to Capt. Watson the next time you hitch a ride with him.

Sometimes you have to dredge a bit.

I doubt if Animal rights could have saved the Dinosaurs, or any of the many of the creatures that have become extinct over the last 2000 years. And yes, I know that man and the Dinasaurs weren't exactly close.

Many animals loose their habitat or food supply due to another species taking over. I think it's called evolution.

Human beings evolved along with numerous other creatures. Maybe it was time for the Monk Seal to become extinct.

It's not beyond the realms of possibilities
