Japan faces engineering shortage (http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/05/16/business/engineers.php)
Japan is running out of engineers. ...
The problem is likely to worsen, because Japan has one of the lowest birthrates in the world. "Japan is sitting on a demographic time bomb," said Kazuhiro Asakawa, a professor of business at Keio University. "An explosion is going to take place. They see it coming, but no one is doing enough about it."
The shortage is causing rising anxiety about Japan's competitiveness. China turns out some 400,000 engineers every year, hoping to usurp Japan's place one day as Asia's greatest economic power.
The writing is on the wall pretty much. Of course things can happen to turn it around, but the trend is quite worrisome, and it seems that efforts are too little, too late.
Sayonara regional economic leader Japan. And thanks for your cultural contributions to the world -- Karate, Kimono, and Kawaiiiiii.
Oh, and disproportionately helping to deplete tuna fish stocks with that voracious appetite for them. We couldn't have done it without you.
