View Full Version : Spinoff - What AFN commercials drive you nuts?

I just had to start a spinoff thread because that thread about Frank the dog got me to thinking.... the three years I've been here I've heard so many radio and TV spots that have made me insane such as:
"It's Teddy, the gentle Liger"
and "some rock, PFC Cletus shot a potato gun on the bus..."
and one I actually kind of grew to like:
"Bam, I'm a styrofoam cup, yo" and it's sequel "Look at her cans, man".
and then there is the spot where the guy didn't use his club card to save 10 percent on dive gear and the son says "I could have got a new video game" and the wife says something like "and I could have got my hair (unintelligible word)" and of course the sequel to that one when the guy DID use his club card to save 10 percent and the son says "let me mow the lawn for you dad" and the wife says "how 'bout that foot massage Boogins".
I have been driving my husband crazy ever since by referring to him as "Boogins".
But you have to admit, the more stupid the commercial, the more likely it will stick in your head, which is the whole point of advertising I guess.
Which AFN radio or TV spots make you crazy?

In the spirit of "the_zach", I hate them all equally, but I take responsibility for many of the troublesome radio commercials.
BTW, having been gone from Okie and out of the service for months now, it heats my ventricles to know my loathsome creations still conjur discussion in these forums. They were designed to be temporary vehicles of an ostrobogulous character, but ultimately they've evolved into a carriage of inveterate annoyance.

I can't think of one.
I thought I heard a new one the other day but I can't remember what it was about. It was on the radio and if I remember it I will add it to the list. I guess we can't blame some_guy for that one.

It's possibly a seasonal ad finding renewed airplay to inculcate the audience about summer topics (heat stroke, snakes, sunburns, etc.).
The, "It puts the lotion on its skin!" ad produced and voiced by Crowell (who does an uncannily accurate buffalo bill impersonation) is a fine example.

I HATE "The Comprehension Fairy" or "Super Happy Fun Play Time" to look both ways when crossing....Or the "I think I ran over FRANK!!!"...Wait..."There's a problem in Okinawa...Its been going on for years...."
I loved the "Blue Falcon" commercials though...Whomever approved that could not have had any idea what that means....

Truer words were never spoken. :)
My only regret is that BF never made the leap to television.

I remember hearing that Blue Falcon radio commercial for the first time, and laughing my butt off, and then thinking to myself, "Oh man....someone is going to be in some DEEP SH*T when who ever approved that is informed of what that means......"

I saw one taday that made me chuckle...
There was a guy laying out on the beach with an obvious sunburn. Then all of a sudden this white goo plopped on his chest. He opened his eyes and felt to see what it was and the proceded to smell said goo. Then the camera panned out and a superhero figure, cape and all, was standing over him and said "Looks like you need some sunscreen" then the commercial ended. I was left staring at the tv like what the hell just happened.
As I always hev added to other similar threads, when it comes to AFN, the mute button is very handy during commercials. Sometimes, I accidentally forget to mute it, and then I get very depressed when I realize it. That's when I have to just shut it off and/or walk/look away for a minute. I only watch AFN if there's a really good show on that I want to see. It truly makes me sick.
I'd imagine this may seem weird to those who have grown up or lived their whole lives around military bases. I never even saw a base other than on TV until I arrived at boot camp at 20 years old, and must say, because of that not only AFN but also the military jets and Helo's also drive me nuts over here. My Okinawan wife, who's lived here her whole life obviously doesn't understand my mentality on these subjects either........

It's TP, just joking.

2. Blue Falcon
Term originating from the military meaning a "buddy ****er". Someone who is a ****off and drags their buddies into shit with them.
I don't see what's so risque about that. I was wondering one time if they realized on one of the commercials, the music seems to be the song Smack My Bitch Up.....
Maybe if the comercial character was like Forrest the Felcher(not that it would make sense) or something, but what's wrong with Blue Falcon?

I was assigned the task of producing a commercial to deter drinking & driving (to supplant the already bloated collection of d&d spots).
The underlying theme was similiar to "Friends don't let friends drink & drive" with the intention of appealing to john doe servicemember. Thus, the ubiquitous and risible nature of the blue falcon term among the masses (particularly rank & file Marines) made it a natural choice to broaden the commercial's appeal.
Select elements of the command were privy to the term's true definition (and didn't care), while other decision-makers were led to believe through mild prevarication on my part that the phrase alluded to a stilted, anthropomorphized fowl representing harmless jingoism (akin to the Air Force mascot). Thus, blue falcon came to life with little controversy (compared to other spots which demanded endless wrangling to see the light of day).
Of course, it would have been largely forgettable if not for Crowell's adept voice acting and some nifty music editing, and the conspicuous mayhem that serves as a banner for most of my commercials.

I see that words have been typed, but I cannot string them together in a way which makes sense. Just curious, do you have one of those "word of the day" calendars?

Man,if they would use words like on air I would be educated by now. Now there is a learning opportunity gone to waste.

Forgive me if it reeks of pretentiousness - that is not my intention.
Old habits linger beyond the reach of common sense; my style of writing has always been, and is now, irrationally grandiloquent, and I'll never change it.
I learned the word gormandize yesterday, happens to be one of my favorite activities and I never knew it.
