Why is it do you think that most Islamic terrorists are intelligent and well educated?

Not only Islamic terrorists, but most ideologues labeled as terrrists seem to be well educated and intelligent -- not to mention that for the most part they come from well to do, or at least upper middle class families in their societies. Of course not all, but this seems to be a trend in profiles of many terrorists and amongst many of their members within their orgs?

How would you explain this?

You have to actually take issue with something in order to be against it. To put it bluntly, dumb people don't have causes. I don't personally know enough terrorists to agree with your use of the word "most" though.

I tend to agree with that.

You may know more than me, then. I personally do not know any.

Here (http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20040704/news_1n4terror.html) is the word "most" used to qualify their education level:

Most Arab terrorists he studied were well-educated, married men from middle-or upper-class families, in their mid-20s and psychologically stable, said Sageman, a psychiatrist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Many of them knew several languages and traveled widely. ...

Only a small percentage of Sageman's sample were poorly educated. Fewer than one-fifth lacked a high school education. Seventy percent had at least some college; several had master's or doctoral degrees.

How do we know that the sample he studied were a good representation of all Arab terrorists?

That is interesting. It would make sense for the upper levels of terrorist organizations to be more educated, but I wouldn’t think the ones who are actually out in the field carrying out the terrorist plots would be as educated.

If my memory is correct, most of the hijackers of 911 were highly educated. Though I would agree with you that the ring leaders of the spectacular attacks would even be more so.

What I find interesting is the U.S. government trying to paint poverty and low education as breeding grounds for today's terrorists, but in fact, they seem to be coming from the well to do and educated of the Islamic world.

1. If my memory is correct, most of the hijackers of 911 were highly educated. Though I would agree with you that the ring leaders of the spectacular attacks would even be more so.

2. What I find interesting is the U.S. government trying to paint poverty and low education as breeding grounds for today's terrorists, but in fact, they seem to be coming from the well to do and educated of the Islamic world.

1. A few months ago, I did a Wikipedia thing and noted that although the majority had received decent formal education, most of them had dropped out, and had failed at their initial endevour. I found that interesting, yet have seen nothing that takes issue with it.

2. The US Government has no idea what a Muslim is, and has pretended terrorists didn't exist for years. 40 percent of Americans believe the world and humans were created sometime in the last 10,000 years, so it is no surprise that the Government would fill their empty little heads with notions which serve their own interests.

I probably offended people with that last, but ignorance pisses me off about as much as elected officials lying to me.

If you just read the first line, it's almost like a RB post.

Could RB really be TP in disguise?

THis entire thread is based on a statement that was NEVER true in the first place. Most people committing acts of Islamic terrorism are NOT well educated. The famous ones are, because they are the upper crust. Most of the 911 hijackers were well educated. No SHIT. If you are going to put a team together to carry out a high risk, high importance mission OF COURSE you are going to pick from the best you can find.

Now Islamic terrorism, Religious terrorism or any terrorist type groups that exist on a massive global scale such as Al Qaeda are typified by a smaller group of well educated and high level folks who lead masses of uneducated followers.

THIS is what the gov't means by poverty breeds terrorism. EX: the majority of people in Iraq engaging in the actual ground fighting in the insurgency are not educated, nor are they what you might call "true believers". They are guys that some other smart guy paid 50$ to go shoot at Americans. From Bin Laden, to Koresh, to that Mormon kid ****er, to Hitler. Its all about gettiing one charismatic guy to take a platform and manipulate the masses.

FACT: The vast majority of ground fighters for Islamic terrorism, (Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan) are not educated, they are poor, uneducated, and often illiterate. Oh yes, thats right, ILLITERATE. The prodominance of low level guys in Iraq taking pot shots at troops and laying roadside bombs in the so called Jihad have never read and are unable to read the Koran for themselves. Their understanding of their Islamic duty, is only what they have explained to them by someone else.

Another FACT: Supposedly it takes a religious authority such as an Imam to sanction action of Jihad, or preach violence against sayy the U.S. Well what do you think the bad guys do? The guys that are all about Islam? They go the the Imams and threaten, beat, etc these guys until they agree to preach Jihad.
