I am happy to see the decline. Hope the decline picks up speed.

Okinawan families are getting smaller as time moves along. Eventually, they, too, will get to the one or 1.9 child per couple.

Great questions.

Create more robots to care for the elderly, to serve burgers at McDonalds, to teach the dwindling number of children, to provide any of the virtually un-necessary social, medical, and community services now offered by humans.

Or, create a society wherein it isn't necessary for two people to work to sustain a household.

Or, import cheap labor from other countries, and let new immigrants become part of the cultural fabric of Japan.

Declining birth rates have coincided with the industrializing of societies. Particularly the more wealthy or advanced a certain society becomes the more likely the birth rate is to decline. People become more dependent upon other venues and less dependent on offspring to stay healthy and taken care of later on in life. The more rural, poor and less industrialized areas/ societies tend to have a much higher birth rate (usually). You can also see the same in parts of the animal kingdom where certain species have a lower longevity and rate of survival. They tend to produce a larger number of offspring and more frequently to sustain the survival of their species. Producing offspring among humans does not carry the high priority and necessity it once did. At least not among the more advanced corners of society.

And I may not have originally thought that. In fact after I started reading some books, watched a few National Geographic shows, well you get the idea. Hate for anyone to think I'm the first person to come up with that.:) Who wants to hear a joke?:D

Didn't the problem in Japan have something to do with the incredibly tough life that working men (and women) have. I mean you have to go out drinking after work, sure as hell don't dare wake up the wife at 2 am even if you haven't dropped a load somewhere else, and then start all over at 6:30 am. Weekends are for golf!

a few years ago they had something on TV about not only is the birth rate getting lower the singles per population rate is also growing. Less and less couples mean less kids as well. They blamed it on the insecurity of the majority of young adults here or as I call it the shyness factor. Place 50 guys in a room and 50 girls in the same room all total strangers and you will see they guys and girls really wont mingle together to much between the sexes. I go to Japanese clubs every now and then and its the same thing not too many Japanese guys will go and ask a girl they dont know to dance or if they would like a drink.

Howdy Folks.
I have been actually writing a small book about this subject for a while now, kind of carried over from the end of my university course work. Anyhow, yeah as someone said, the lower income areas usually have the higher birthrates. Which would be why Okinawa would have higher births than Tokyo, and why Okinawa had the highest percentage since it is the prefecture with the lowest economic numbers. Part of my study showed that not only are divorce rates in Japan around the same as Americans (50% range) but because of the whole salaryman environment, the men usually don't even sleep in the same bed as their wife, and MAYBE have sex once or twice a month. The more money made and responsibility the man had, the worse it was. What I did find interesting though is the concept of love in Japan, had more to do with "obligation" than it did the western thought of "unconditional love" which is really a Judeo-Christian mindset. All my research is based on about 2000-2007, so I don't have any current numbers. One thing is for sure, younger Japanese citizens will be paying huge taxes for the older folks as time goes on. I was writing this book as part of my business degree, so it delt with the environment here in Japan, of which the declining birthrate was a huge factor. Hope you get a copy when the book comes out...

Part of the culture...seperating of sexes. Except for those brave few on either side. Which I suppose is another reason aggresive foreigners don't have a problem in Asian countries.

I mean, everyone has seen it. The guy everyone knows would not get the time of day in the US, is here in Japan with a supermodel. Not because a Japanese girl would fall for anybody, or just wants money...don't get me wrong, my wife is a beautiful, and smart Japanese woman... but just for maybe the simple reason that Japanese guys are to shy "scarry" as we say in the south, to talk to a nice Japanese lady.
