I want to buy a new muffler for my Toyota truck (diesel). The old one works, but I want more of a performance one, and perhaps something that would help knock down on some of the excessive smoking when the wife pushes too hard on the pedal! :D

What do I need to consider when shopping around? Obviously connection size, but are there different grades as far as diesel/gasoline, etc..?

I don't believe any muffler will stop the vehicle from smoking.. that is from other issues. If you find a replacement muffler, it would be made for your particular vehicle already. diesels and gas versions have different exhausts. I don't recall having seen any for diesel trucks.. you may have to order from Australia. I know diesel upgrades are popular there.

Thanks for the reply Tani. The truck usually doesn't smoke...only when the wife drives, and she has a lead foot! Too much fuel = smoke...when dealing with a diesel!

It doesn't smoke under normal driving though. I kinda wanted to upgrade to something with a little more balls if you know what I mean.

Some AU sites have upgrade turbos and injection pump parts that can get some major power gains from turbo diesels. I don't recall it really being popular here though. If you have already done the normal tune up steps like air and fuel filters, I recommend having the injection pump overhauled if it is still smoking under heavy loads. Did wonders for mine after I repaired it. More power, and no smoke!
