View Full Version : I went to my favorite bar last night

... and found out that it was the last night they would be open.

It's kind of a long story as to why this is a sad thing.

A few months ago, I was moping around the house kind of bummed out. With a new baby in the house, our sleeping habits have been thrown out of wack and my wife started going to bed earlier and earlier so she could wake up early in the morning when the baby wakes up. This led to some boredom and loneliness on my part.

So, one Friday night, I was a little overly lonely and decided to check out a bar by my house that I've driven by dozens of times. It was within walking distance, so after the wife went to bed, I walked over.

Small little darts bar in Urasoe.

When I entered, I was greeted with a "woah, a foreigner look". I was later told that no other Americans have ever visited that bar.

I ordered a beer and watched a few of the locals shoot darts. I didn't talk as I didn't know anyone. Eventually, one of the guys at the other table started talking to me in broken English. It turned out that everyone at the table next to me were Japanese programmers working for a bank near my house, so we instantly had something to relate to. They invited me to their table and we had a drunken talk about all kinds of things.

I never saw those guys again.

The next time I came, there were only one or two people in the bar and I didn't know anyone. I pretty much felt like a shadow and wasn't paid much attention. After a while, I tried to spark up some conversation, but nothing really happened. I was still the new guy.

The next time I came, it was pretty much the same situation, but I finally got the owner to open up to me a little by asking him to shoot a game of darts with me. Before that, he'd just kind of stand there and make no effort to communicate. After we shot darts, it was like a big wall crumbled.

Since then, I visited three or four more times, and each visit things seemed like the bar regulars were starting to open up more and more and that I was FINALLY making some progress in the friends department.

Yesterday, I showed up, and the bar was full. A few of the random strangers gave me the "woah a foreigner" look, but the bartender and owner were cool from the get go. When the bar emptied a little bit, I had a lot of friendly conversation with the bartender, and owner.

And then right before closing time, they broke it to me: They were closing their bar in my area and opening up shop in Matsuyama. :(

I'll probably go visit them from time to time. I'm really glad I had the chance to make some friends and that they eventually opened up to me, but the thing I always liked about this bar is that on those days when I get overly lonely from a quiet house, I can always walk to the bar three minutes away from my house. I don't even like darts. I'll probably go visit them at the new bar once or twice to wish them luck, but this is a real bummer for me. I was really hopeing to make some local friends from around my area.

And there's my long, sad, tragic story of the day.

Awwwww, that's sad and depressing!

Perhaps you will find another place tucked away nearby to help fill the void of your favorite bar.
Poor, poor, dk :(

I had a similar thing happen before...but I had been going to that bar for 6 years...the owner finally had enough and closed up shop! Sad, sad day!

Sadly I don't venture out very far, but I do have a favorite bar, Side Door, only because I've been going there for so long and I know most of everyone that comes in. they have good music, darts, and I usually get free drinks on the nights that I'm not driving. Whenever I'm bored and having better to do, which here lately isn't a lot, but it's almost like a second home. lol.

I'm sorry that bar closed dk, the best ones are the small quiet ones that's where you find the most interesting people.

I've heard about side door. Going to have to check it out sometime.

On Tuesday I ventured over to another bar semi-near my house. It's a lot further away than the darts bar, but a one-way taxi ride will only cost Y500 or so. Looks like that might become my new home, but I'm not sure yet. They play great music, but it's always empty, and it's one of those places you BRING a date to, not meet people at.

But the bartender is fun to try to talk to.

I love the Side Door, I just rather not drink because taxis are so expensive out here, from my house to Gate 2 is like Y3000 which sucks, but I usually have a good friend who'll be nice enough to let me drink and they drive me home.

Side Door can be pretty empty too...but most of the time people are nice enough to talk to you and if you're looking to see bodies in there the best days to go are thurdays, fridays, and satudays. I just like how chill it is there, it's not all hyped up and loud, and they people that come in there are pretty funny to watch.

Where is Side Door? I need a new favorite bar where young drunk dudes don't think I am going to hit on their wimmen just because I looked at them. :)

The anzuya withe the drinking plan I used to love to go to closed down. I think they weren't making enough money of the drinking plan. It was all you can drink for 2 hours for 980 yen!

It's on Gate 2 Street. Just look on the side where Club Red, First Chance/Last Chance, Al's Place, etc. It's a tiny little bar upstairs, you'll notice it because it has a red flashing light below it's sign which has a dart board on it.

All this talking about it makes me wanna go....guess I'll be heading there this weekend. LOL

I've outgrown bars. It's much more comfortable to me to hang out at the house, or a friends house and drink. But there is usually 10-15 of us, so I guess it's just like a bar! Especially since I have a dart board in my garage!

I'd enjoy drinking with my buddies at the house but I guess I'm just interested in meeting people for the most part....I guess it just depends on the night and the mood I'm in. Sometimes I just like to stay in with my mom and drink her under the table. :)

Yeah, the main reason I go out is to meet people. I don't really have a lot of friends. I guess I'm kind of anti-social usually, and with here being Okinawa, I just haven't built up a large base of friends. And sometimes, I just want to listen to people speaking Japanese and try to soak in a little bit.

I mainly drink at home, but sometimes you just have to get out of the house. :)

I'm really looking forward to the first ever JU Forums drinking session. hahaha. Looks like we've got a pretty interesting crew so far lol.

Besides that, dk owes me like 2 or 3 6 packs already!

dk

I think we're up to 1 six pack lol. Which equates to about 2 drinks at a bar!

Hey! I'm always up for meeting new people, I'm curious to see how'd we interact with each other without the screens and keyboards.

I think I more of an anti-social person, but if someone comes up to me to strike up a conversation, I'll gladly talk to them until they grow tired of me or find something else that catches their attention......but I love to people watch, especially drunk people....I've been at it so long that everything that happens is predictable.

That's pretty much how I am. I don't go out of my way to start conversation (usually), but I'll gladly talk to anyone who approaches me.

Every now and then I get brave when I'm in the drink line and put out a "Hi". Sometimes that alone starts conversation. :p But aside from that, I'm not very outgoing. lol.

I get more outgoing the more I drink though hahaha.

Liquid courage, it works wonders. Of course for some reason when I've had too much I think it's more rose colored glasses. LOL....because no matter what going on around me....I think everything is just peachy.

And I think I'm Donald Freakin Trump. LMAO.

Well not always. Sometimes I'm John Travolta. hahahaha.

this is the sad sad story many of us encounter on okinawa. new places open and old places close it seems all the time. the bar that started all for me was the Beach Rockhouse 69 in yomitan. man i learned so much at that place. my wife and i practically lived there for the first year i was here. sometimes on the weekends we would stay there and not go home. i actualy shed a tear at the closing party.....it was fun tho and i have some "keepsakes" from there. and does anyone know of Pee Pee Ka KA? wow what a fun place. also yomitan, also now closed.

the thing is you have to apreciate the good times when they are here. and there will be more good times around the corner.

Woah, Pee Pee Ka Ka closed?! I've never been there, but the name always made me laugh.

There's a bar I've been hanging out at near my house. I got the bartender hooked on Phish, so it's a LOT of fun after the customers go home.

I pretty much loaned him most of my phish/wilco/radiohead/dead since I have it all on ipod. I'm sure the guy loves me now lol.

Is the Kaya Hut still open? I use to go there about 9 years ago. They had a drink called the Kaya Special that was made with tonic water and glowed under a blacklight. Very cool little bar.
