View Full Version : Wendy's in Okinawa

A bit of news that some may find interesting...while driving in Okinawa City yesterday and passing by the soon-to-be-open "Koza Music City" building, what did I behold on the side of the building? A sign for the apparently forthcoming Wendy's to be located inside.

I don't worship at the altar of fast food, but I do likes me a Wendy's burger every now and again. Up until now, whenever I went to mainland I made it a point to duck into a Wendy's and satisfy that craving for another few months.

I always wondered if/when Wendy's would make its way down to our little island paradise. Long overdue, if you ask me.

Peace,

BK out

Maybe if we are lucky, they'll offer teriyaki burgers. :) (As I once saw at a McD's grand opening in Singapore) Another example of our globalization.

I always liked their "shakes." Well, I did in the 70's which was my last trip to Wendys.

When will we see unten dyko in the US? Socialized health care? Lawons? Beer vending machines? Now that would be impressive.

Dude, like the little red haired girl with pigtails Wendy's?! That'd be so cool. I always liked their shakes.

What we really need is a TGIFridays or a Dennys at the Koza Music Town; something open all night on the weekends. :p

Vending machines in neighborhoods would be SO cool! I would love to see that!

The assortment of drinks was always awesome too. Unfortunately in the US, the machines would likely be robbed, vandalized and such...I doubt we would ever see it catch on here. :(

Wendy's would be awesome! I've been trying to stay away from fast food but I do love wendy's.

I wish it would replace one of the burnt out businesses on 58. I'd love to pick up wendy's on my way to work. Okinawa City is kind of out of the way for me. :(

Someone, bring me one of their chocolate shakes when they open. Or was it mocha? I just remember them being good.

Chocloate. That was the best one. I liked dipping my french fries in them. It doesn't work with any other shake and fries, only Wendy's. Yeah, you can stop making that face now. :p

that's right. everyone was calling them shakes, and i didn't want to be that guy who corrects everyone... this time. heh.

i also miss orange julius and foster freeze. yum. heh. no wonder the u.s. has an obesity problem.

My friend is a developer. He brings outside businesses in to Okinawa. He was in on the Wendy's thing, he actually just came back from NYC this weekend. He's been over there trying to work out details on some other deals. Many of the Okinawan's hate him for bringing in some of these places!

Last I knew, the building was scheduled to open on July 27 or thereabouts. I'm not sure if they are still on pace for that or not.

Nevertheless, it shouldn't be long now.

I'll talk to him. A few years back he was actively trying to get a Wal-Mart in here...but that was way too expensive for him.

He specializes more in bringing things from mainland Japan to Okinawa. The franchise prices on things like Wendy's, BK, etc...is through the roof!

If a TGIFridays opened up within half an hour's driving distance from my house, I'd probably never complain about living on Okinawa again.

I looooooooooooove TGIFridays. Tokyo has one, so we need one too!

TGI Fridays would always be packed with Americans though! You think they go nuts over Chili's and Macaroni Grill...they'd lose their damn minds! I go to the one in Tokyo all the time...(well 4-5 times a year!)

there you go then. tokyo has a tgifridays, so it should be easier to get one on okinawa. there's a great place for one on hwy 58 where johnnys cars once was located. it's right on the edge of mihama with lots of other restaurants. i went so far as to write tgifridays int'l once. they responded that they passed on the request... hmm.

There are other plans for that lot...besides that would be an awful place for a nice resturant. No traffic flow at all! I'll be glad once the Awase project is completed...should free up some traffic flow in Chatan!

I'm not a big fan of TGIFriday's. I'd rather see an applebees or something else. Eh I hate chilli's as well. I don't see why everyone makes a big deal about it. It costs around 12 bucks for and 'ok' meal. Not worth it if you ask me.

I don't much care for Wendy's per-say, but I remember going TDY to Hawaii, and the Wendy's over there had a "killer" stuffed baked potato.

We usually went to eat off-base during our last visit to Okinawa. The reason being that the American franchises often employed local management, which tried to pervert a "good meal", by using local condiments/seasoning. E.G., the hot dogs at A&W over there, are not as good as the ones that you purchase here.

Just before we left, we visited the "then" new Captain D's, on Camp Foster. We visited a local one here in Florida, and the food was much better prepared than what we experienced over there.

But we are looking forward to trying out some of the new local places on Okinawa, since we left. 38 days left in the states as we speak. The first place that we'll hit is The Royal Hotel, in Yomitan. The best yakisoba on the island, IMHO. :D

I look forward to a chocolate frostie at Wendys soon also! :p

Coffee really isn't that tasty of a drink. No matter how much junk you mix in with it! Not to mention the caffeine isn't good for you either.

I can't say nothing bad about caffeine though, I drink too much pop. I gave it up for about 5 months but started again!

This topic is irreversibly off-topic.

But.

There used to be a tiny mom and pop yakiniku restaurant near my house that advertised "Coffee and Meat". That just sounds like a terrible combination.

Belch! We had our first one in our area open about a yr & a half ago.
Food was not good at all and service was CRAP!!! My oldest ended up taking the kids cups to the bar to get them refilled because we did not see a waiter from the time he took our order till he brought the bill. Someone else brought the food out.
We only went once, a couple months ago, but everyone we have talked to has repeated the same experience with the joint.

I am in amazement that you are gettin a wendy's....gonna fatten up the entire world with our unhealthy food traditions. :)

I love yakiniku! I usually go to karubi daiyo but goan isn't that bad either. Anyone know of any good yakiniku places I could go to?

There is this one place my wife likes but I can't remember the name. It's not bad but not as good a karubi daiyo! She goes there for the raw liver! No thanks I don't even like cooked liver! LOL I loved her engrish the first time she told me about it. She said she wanted to take me there and that she wanted to eat the "row river". Oh she also heard the raw liver makes your opai bigger so she wanted to see if it worked:p

I was at the Olympic Mall today and I saw 2 Wendy's Frosty cups in the trash. I thought it was just a fluke and then I hop on here and see that we now have a Wendy's. Back in the states I worked for Wendy's for 4 1/2 years. I must say I was excited to come here and not see one, but then I started missing some of the food. I am very happy now!!!
Now if we could only get a Chick-fil-A here I would be a very happy (and probably very fat) camper;).

Where on earth would they find Hooters' girls on Okinawa? Have you seen most of the young females on island? They are what we call a carpenter's dream; straight up and down. True, most Okinawan women are curvier than most Japanese women, but really, how many Okinawan/Japanese bar girls did you ever see on gate 2 or BC streets? Hooters would go over well off base, but would have to be staffed by SOFA status deps to give it the same "feel" as stateside Hooters. Honestly, who wants to see their wife or daughter in those outfits surrounded by a dozen virile, young men? :)

As for TGIFridays, where the hey is Kanagawa?! I want my french onion soup TGIF style! Can I take an AMC hop there? I am so tempted to sleep in the terminal just for some TGIF. I am so craving, and it's not nice to tease a pregnant woman with food she can't have, but wants! :p :D

DoctorP

As for your comment about Hooters girls, you could find puuuulenty of women (both American and Okinawan) who could staff that place. For you to make a blanket statement that the women here have no curves...you must be walking around with blinders on. I could find enough women to staff it myself. Of course, they would only want to do it if there were tips involved! The hourly pay alone wouldn't be worth going through all of the bs!

I didn't say there were none, nor did I make a blanket statement. With you around, I don't dare post anything remotely controversial without clarification.

I don't walk around with blinders on. I'm the one who has to point out the good looking girls to my husband. He's an odd one. I'm the cool one.

I said "most", not all. I also used smiley faces three separate times to denote the statements were made mostly "tongue in cheek".

Seriously, I wasn't criticizing Okinawan/Japanese females. I simply have never seen any of them in the pictures outside juicy girl bars on gate 2 or BC street. I like to believe they're more qualified in the local job market than being "that kind of waitress", which I believe Hooters' girls are only one level above. It's my opinion that no self-respecting female would let herself be exploited in that way.

I am not a wendy's person. Every time I get a burger they put ice cold lettuce, tomato, ketchup, onion and mustard on it, the damn cheese isn't even melted and the whole burger is cold. I am a major fry person, and the fries are always cold too.
Now their frosties are yummy! But that is about all I go there for.
Or their $.99 chicken nuggets for the kids a drive thru snack when we are out and about and don't have any snacks with us.

Don't blame ya. Same thing happened to me at a restaurant back home. Had some bad catfish and had to get my stomach pumped. I honestly didn't eat catfish for another 12 years. Even now a days a stay pretty clear of it. Its too bad because I used to love catfish.:(

Dude, like the little red haired girl with pigtails Wendy's?! That'd be so cool. I always liked their shakes.

What we really need is a TGIFridays or a Dennys at the Koza Music Town; something open all night on the weekends. :p

Good call and don't forget IHOP:thumbup1:

Purely out of curiosity how do you know that it was Wendy's that was the cause of your food poisoning?

The one thing I always liked about Wendy's is that they've got the baked potatoes......if you're not in a "fast food" mood, and want something somewhat healthy.....(even though they come with chili or bacon or cheese)

I read what you wrote I am not blind...... However you wrote this.....

That tells me that your whole family ate there, right? So why didnt your kids get it if your case of food poisoning was so severe that you thought you were going to die? How can you be sure? Your kids ate too!

What did you "both" eat that caused it?

You know not to defend Wendy's, although it will probably sound that way here, however you are making a serious allegation, I hope you know.

Is it possible that it was something else you ate? Just because it was the "last" thing doesnt necessarily make it the culprit. Depending upon your age, and overall health the onset of symptoms and length of them will vary ,also it depends upon the "bug" that got you as well.

Did you know that some types of food poisoning have symptoms that don't show up for almost a day to a day and a half later?

Consider this as well, it stands to reason that unless you and your husband are in poor physical condition or your children are beyond belief in great health the odds are great that you all would have suffered the same symptoms and illness as well right?

So if that was the case it wasn't Wendy's that got you but something else.
Somthing to consider before wanting to point the finger at Wendy's. There are too many different places that it is possible to get it, sure Wendy's could be at fault, but then again they might not be.

No reason to be im scared to eat there now..:)

But if you want to go on blaming Wendy's feel free, there is nothing I can say to make you think any differently.

because my kids didnt eat the same thing we ate?? we had burgerrs and they had like chicken nuggets... thats why.. and when i upchucked that shit that is all that came out of me.. pink meat and all.. i know what kind of allegation i am making.. my symptoms started hours after i ate just the wendys food
im not sure why you think i would be making a false allegation about food poisioning but this is the actually the 3rd time i have had food poisiong from fast food and it is not a nice feeling

lol u sound like a wendy's spokesperson

just because you threw up hamburgers doesn't mean that is what caused you to be sick. Hamburgers were just the only thing in your stomach once you threw up.

I have also had a bad case of food poisoning from BK (possibly), but I have no way of proving that it was BK. I had BK for dinner but my lunch could have easily been the cause of my food poisoning. BK was just the last thing I ate before I got sick. I understand where muku is coming from.

the last time this happened to me was with pizza

we odered like 4 boxes and all were fine i didnt eat the supreme one at first

but my husband and his friend did...

my husband and my friend got sick first.. our friend got it at th worst possible time while we was on the road driving to Reno....

but a few hours later i got hungry again and ate the same supreme pizza and almost immediately i started feeling sick

so to say that i cant prove it wasnt the food i ate at wendys doesnt make sense to me because of the last experience i went through

but i didnt really come on this forum to argue about food poisioning but i respect your point anyway

Sorry for coming across like an ass in my previous reply. I think though you know what I am talking about.

Unless you and your husband ate the same hamburger the chances, while there of course, of you both getting food poisoning are pretty low dont you think?

I am not a spokesman for Wendy's btw.:D

And like P Chan wrote as well, just because it was the last thing, and what you :barf: up doesnt necessarily make it the cause.

ya know, I ate at BK this one time..(haha...that sounded like American Pie), and shortly after I had those terrible sulfur burps that almost made me want to puke. After a swig of Pepto, I felt better. However, two or three times again after eating BK, I got them again. That is when I knew for sure it was BK. I didnt get food poisioning. Well, I wasnt vomitting but my stomach was turning a lot. I will still eat there but I wont eat the burgers. I will just have chicken nuggets or the chicken fries.

I was eating dinner at a yakiniku place today with a friend of mine who's been on island for over 13 years. I've known him for years, and we've been hanging out a lot more lately. Well he made the comment that him and his girlfriend have been looking for new places to eat since they've been going out to dinner with me and my wife. For as long as he has lived here, he had no idea that there was such a variaty of food on this island.

I never miss any food from the states.. I hardly ever eat on base, subway is about it. Ameicans are such picky eaters..

I just ate at the Okinawa Wendy's for the first time. I would not go again.
Had to wait ages just for a burger and coke to go. It was okay, nothing to rave about.
They don't do baked potatoes anymore, and that is what I really wanted with chilli beans. If they don't have them, what are you going to eat with your chilli beans??
I was also surprised when I noticed that none of the staff spoke any english to the mostly american clientele.
And just to rant some more, had to pay 100yen more just for parking.

I used to like the one I would go to in Tokyo many years ago, they have more of a varied menu I think.

only reason for me stop would be for the extra expensive and small Frosty in both flavors, other than that - they can keep there crappy fast food. The japanese rice bowl next to it seems more appetizing. One thing they got going for them is 24h operations.

I have to call you on that one! :p I've seen some thin ones who can pack it away in one sitting; gyoza, udon/ramen, tenpura/sashimi/sushi set and then dessert! Of course, this is about a two hour sitting with copious amounts of drink, talk, cigarettes, annoying giggling and toilet trips. Then there's that one chick on DownTown (Gaki No Tsukai) who can out-eat all the guys.

I also think that place is better than Wendy's. I like the "Mega" bowl with the mentaiko mayo sauce. Before the curfew, i thought it was funny, all the drunk Americans standing in line at Wendy's in the wee hours of the morning, waiting to eat that crap. I would just go get a Mega, and be in and out. Oh yeah, I was drunk also, but i'm cool!
