asahi.com (http://www.asahi.com/english/Herald-asahi/TKY200804150067.html)

Three 14-year-old girls were arrested here after they allegedly assaulted a pair of police officers who had admonished them for riding double on their bicycles.

Umm can I ask how long have you been living here?

I can't believe that someone is actually a little shocked by "a lack of respect" here. I might suggest walking into just about any JHS here on island and have your "bubble" popped.

I lived in Mainland Japan for 8 years and 4 years in Okinawa; actually my house was 2 blocks from a Japanese high school. I never saw anything shocking but maybe burning smokes, drinking booze and your typical wannabe biker gangs by local kids... Is it common for stuff like this to happen(young girls fighting with cops)? No.. In Okinawa? Probably so... In the US? I'm not surprised at all. Most kid’s especially 14 year old Japanese girls have a ton of respect for elders/teachers/cops at least to their face. I don't hang out at local JHS to have my bubble burst, but I'll take your word on it

I'm not shocked that Japanese School kids are causing trouble. I know it goes on everywhere. I'm shocked that 14 year old girls are ******* with cops! Hence the reason I said "SOMEWHAT rare in Japanese culture"

I am mostly surprised that society is so authoritarian as to ban something like riding double on a bike. So long as foot pedals are installed on the sides of the axle of the back tire, I dont see the big deal. I see people doing this all the time. I see the person on the back get off quick and safe whenever anything goes wrong. I have also seen singles fall over for no reason, so I am more worried about individual riders being unsafe than some particular form of riding.

That being said, I can see why the teens would be miffed by the cops hassling them for such a simple thing. But that would not justify assault. Something else might, but that short article does not contain all the facts I am sure. The cops sure might have done more than just "admonish" to get his kick in the leg.

THAT being said, I would rather the police crack down on more serious violations by cyclists, which I see more often than double riding, like not stopping for stop signs or red lights.

Now I am still suprised that the cop didn't at least defend himself...does the article say how the students assaulted him (Or her)?

Well-considering today's society as far a discipline is concerned, perhaps such shock is unecessary on my part...

I mean if they have nothing to do than stop some kids riding doubles than I guess the japanese police don't have much to do. but the he should have mace that girl. he shouldn't have to take that.

"Tokyo Underworld" Good book that exposes a lot of.. I didn't think the Japanese were like that stereotypes.

Also the book talks about, of course, Tokyo's underworld, mafias, corrupt executive (Japanese and American), and the rise and fall of a former Marine from New York as "the most powerful gaijin in the Tokyo underworld"
