Ok since I keep reading through a lot of complaints hinting that there's not enough local crimes that are committed published in the news I figured I post a few of them up. They do get reported and published. These few are from one online site alone. There are of course others out there as well.
How does that line go again...
"We commit crimes, they commit crimes"
It is very much true, murderers and criminals come in every shape, size, color and creed.
Enjoy.

They commit crimes so it's ok for us to commit crimes right? I guess since their own commit crimes they have no right to complain once one of our own commits a crime right?
I'm so sick of hearing that childish arguement:(
Thanks for posting some articles though doug! If someone would just actually watch the local news (and understand it) they would see that crimes commited by Japanese people are in the news a lot more then crimes by Americans.

Yeah as I said in the other thread the whole "So-and-so did it too." definitely does not make it right. Not a valid argument. Just trying to show that these other crimes do get reported. They may not be as high profile though which I do disagree with in the fact that sometimes certain crimes get more coverage and tend to make certain groups look "less civilized" Kind of like how crimes committed by minorities in America have had a bit more air time then others in the past. You may see a small blurb in the papers about a DUI related death but boy if it was committed by an immigrant, look out. Its front page material.
But yeah leaning on that one like its going to make a difference is rather childish. In my opinion heinous crimes deserve some exposure regardless of who committed them. I'm all for having them out in the open for the public to see. I'd actually hate for the crimes committed by military and others with SOFA ID cards to simply get brushed under the rug. The overall unintended backlash and appearance that it gives the rest of us is not something I enjoy. Often I do feel as though the media and other groups facilitate this and almost borderlines mediating hate.

IMO the majority of Japanese people remain largely ignorant as to what really happens in their beloved nation. Perhaps as more and more people get online then this will change

Maybe it is important that the problems caused by SOFA people are stressed, if for no other reason then to get everyone here on the same page as far as understanding what the curfews, lockdowns and other restrictions are all about.
So many of the posts here just show the need to keep pushing this - that this is NOT a US territory, that local people are sensitive to bad and rowdy behavior, and that serious shit like drunk driving and sexual assault cannot be tolerated.

Absolutely agree that these things should be exposed but cannot say that I agree with imposing a curfew or restrictions. Punishing the innocent of one group to appease the masses of another just doesn't jive well. Although I do wish that these atrocities when brought to light would have a more positive affect. That affect being it might curb such behaviors and open peoples minds to what has had the Okinawans up in arms for so long. They simply wish that such heinous acts would not happen or continue to happen.
I do however disagree with those that feel all of the military should be locked up or punished. Such a request implicates a view that service members and others with SOFA ID cards are lower forms of life and should be handled as such. This couldn't be further from the truth. We are all capable of good things and horrific things alike. Mass punishment is never the answer to solving any of this.

I am not arguing in favor or against those restrictions, just to keep publicizing what's going on. Children and too many so-called adults need to see both the cause and effect under their nose in order to understand the result of bad behavior.

You think so? Just watch any afternoon "wideshow", the news on NHK, FNN, TBS, OTV, RBC, QAB.
Oh and then the newspapers, the Yomiuri Shimbun has the highest readership in Japan They "know", oh and take a look at this link about readership; Japan Media Review (http://www.japanmediareview.com/japan/wiki/Shimbunwiki/).
Japanese in general know the news just because they dont talk about it with you is another story.

Yes you are right Muku. I just never watch Japanese TV anymore, but they have lots of morning news shows, wide shows, chat shows where they are always talking about the National news and related incidents.
I remember the time I visited my friend in Kumamoto, and after 3 days I was just amazed at the amount of crime that went on in this country.
It is reported all right. All day, all the time. In Japanese.

Or if you have a Japanese TV they simulcast English audio for News shows on NHK and RBC.

I am fairly certain that for RBC it is only the national news evenings at 6PM and NHK is bilingual at 7PM weeknights and the 9PM update.

I made a comment similar to that on another thread here the one about the "jeep" that turned around at the school.
I know I shouldnt be however I am frequently amazed that people here "expect" all the news to be in English for their convenience, it is pure arrogance to me. Plus there are plenty of English newspapers and websites dedicated to the news and business of Japan.

Yeah I think most were under the impression that it was a direct translation. That's where the criticism probably came from.
