A 22-year-old U.S. sailor who is being held on suspicion of desertion has admitted to killing a Japanese taxi driver in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, in March, Japanese police sources said Tuesday. Police are planning to question the man, currently being held by the U.S. Navy at the naval base in Yokosuka, on Wednesday and if they believe they can build a case against him they will request an arrest warrant on murder and other charges, the sources said.
Well there you have it. He admitted to it. I wonder what's the next logical step in all of this and what it means for personnel in Japan residing under SOFA. :argh3:

How long will this "Period of Reflection" last? A murder rap will probably make it years.

Just like the liberty card program the air force came up with after the incident in 2005. Pepople kept saying it was going to go away once it first happened, it never did.
I do have a little bit of hope though. I still haven't been told to throw away my silver card, maybe they'll bring it back. Talk about wishful thinking!

US Navy imposes curfew in Japan (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080402/pl_afp/japanusmilitarycrime)
Troops and their families will be ordered to stay on the base or in off-base residences between the hours of 10:00 pm and 6:00 am until at least Monday, except for travel to work and "essential errands," a military statement said.
The suspect has told Japanese police that he heard a voice in his head telling him to kill somebody, Jiji Press reported.
