So how many people are getting tired of all the CRAP that seems to stem from organized religion? I for one can't stand ANY religion on any level but I'm sure you've already figured that out. What's your take on it?

I don't think it's the religions, just the fundies / extremists that give the religions a bad name. Me personally was baptized Catholic, I believe in Jesus but don't really practice any religion.

I believe people should just believe in whaterver they want.

My stand is:
I accept and respect their choice, they need to accept and respect mine.

I was raised catholic by my grandparents but my own parents were semi-agnostic. I was turned off mainly from the church when my husband and I went to get married. That is when the politics were finally brought to light for me.

Let's see... the Jesus fish. "Fishy" symbolism can be found throughout the New Testament. Jesus feeds a few thousand people(think it might be 5000) with bread and 2 fish... he befriends 2 fisherman in Galilei who follow him etc. But in all honesty that fish is nothing more than a Pagan astrological symbol for the age of Pisces. Look at the old zodiac symbol for Pisces and you might get an idea where the Jesus fish originated. An up and coming religion or a newly predominant religion is not necessarily above borrowing from other religions.

The cross(Celtic) is nothing more than a pagan adaptation of the Zodiac cross. In fact they've been used as religious symbols long before the Christ supposedly walked the earth. Take the Ankh, Sun cross(Odin's cross) or even the Tau Cross etc... Hmm come to think of it.. Jesus wasn't the only religious figure to be crucified either.

i am sure the super religious people feel the same way about you, except they want to save you so they spill their religious propaganda, and you feel there is nothing to be saved from so you could care less that everyone doesn't feel the way you do. there is no winning this fight, i think i read somewhere that more of the wars ever fought in history stemmed from religious beliefs, than any one other reason. that is why i keep to myself, i believe in god, but not so much organized religion, i dont shout from the roof tops the way i feel, the only person that bugs me is a family memeber who just wants someone to go to church with, and really i usually go, i find other religions intriguing, i dont plan on adopting them, but its nice to know i am informed.

THE HOW AND WHY OF THE MAYAN END DATE IN 2012 A.D.
by John Major Jenkins

 May 23rd, 1994

Originally published in the Dec-Jan '95 issue of Mountain Astrologer.
Why did the ancient Mayan or pre-Maya choose December 21st, 2012 A.D., as the end of their Long Count calendar? This article will cover some recent research. Scholars have known for decades that the 13-baktun cycle of the Mayan "Long Count" system of timekeeping was set to end precisely on a winter solstice, and that this system was put in place some 2300 years ago. This amazing fact - that ancient Mesoameri- can skywatchers were able to pinpoint a winter solstice far off into the future - has not been dealt with by Mayanists. And why did they choose the year 2012? One immediately gets the impression that there is a very strange mystery to be confronted here. I will be building upon a clue to this mystery reported by epigrapher Linda Schele in Maya Cosmos (1994). This article is the natural culmination of the research relating to the Mayan Long Count and the precession of the equinoxes that I explored in my recent book Tzolkin: Visionary Perspectives and Calendar Studies (Borderlands Science and Research Foundation, 1994).

The Mayan Long Count
Just some basics to get us started. The Maya were adept skywatchers. Their Classic Period is thought to have lasted from 200 A.D. to 900 A.D., but recent archeological findings are pushing back the dawn of Mayan civilization in Mesoamerica. Large ruin sites indicating high culture with distinctly Mayan antecedents are being found in the jungles of Guatemala dating back to before the common era. And even before this, the Olmec civilization flourished and developed the sacred count of 260 days known as the tzolkin. The early Maya adopted two different time keeping systems, the "Short Count" and the Long Count. The Short Count derives from combining the tzolkin cycle with the solar year and the Venus cycle of 584 days. In this way, "short" periods of 13, 52 and 104 years are generated. Unfortunately, we won't have occasion to dwell on the properties of the so-called Short Count system here. The Long Count system is somewhat more abstract, yet is also related to certain astronomical cycles. It is based upon nested cycles of days multiplied at each level by that key Mayan number, twenty:

Number of Days / Term
1 / Kin (day)

20 / Uinal

360 / Tun

As far as the world ending, I don't think that will happen in our lifetime. The Earth has been around forever, and will probably be around forever. Or at least until the sun turns into a red giant and makes the Earth uninhabitable. We've still got a few billion years until that happens.

What would be more plausible would be humans destorying themselves.

OREGON CITY, Ore. — The parents of an Oregon City toddler have been indicted on charges of manslaughter and criminal mistreatment, after their daughter died of what officials are calling medical neglect.

Carl and Raylene Worthington were indicted on Friday. They are members of the Followers of Christ Church, whose members have a history of treating gravely ill children solely via prayer, instead of with medical attention.

After several children whose parents were members of the church died in the 1990s, lawmakers passed new rules striking down legal shields for faith-healing parents.

Since then, there have been no troublesome reports of children's deaths associated with the church, until the case of Ava Worthington, who died March 2 of bronchial pneumonia and a blood infection.

The state medical examiner's office has said that she could have been treated with antibiotics.

Since the new laws took effect in 1999, said child abuse Detective Jeff Green of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, "We haven't seen any cases of significant medical neglect ... until now."

Before the law changed, church members who got in traffic accidents would take injured children home, rather than to the hospital, leaving police frustrated but powerless to intervene, Green said.

RelatedStories
Oregon Couple Charged in Daughter's Faith-Healing Death In the two years after the law passed, detectives responded to two cases of sick or injured Followers of Christ children, Green said.

One child had Crohn's disease and the other had a broken arm, which church members had tried to set themselves. In both cases, parents complied without protest when police insisted that they take their children to licensed physicians.

Ava Worthington's parents also lost a baby boy in August 2001, but the death investigation was closed after family members told police the child was stillborn.

Several other Followers of Christ children have also been stillborn or died during home births in recent years, but none of the investigated deaths resulted in criminal charges.

The couple faces sentences of more than six years on the manslaughter charges and up to a year on the mistreatment charges, said Greg Horner, chief deputy district attorney for the county. After surrendering at the jail Friday, they were released on $250,000 bail, he said.

They were to appear at a hearing Monday afternoon.

Horner said he didn't know whether the couple had lawyers. A number listed for the couple was disconnected. "We've been told, 'No comment,' " said a man who answered the phone at the church Monday. He would not identify himself.

The Oregon City church, which is not associated with a mainstream denomination, traces its origins to the faith-healing Pentecostal movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Police are conducting interviews Thursday in an effort to determine whether charges will be filed against a couple who prayed rather than seeking medical help for their 11-year-old daughter, who died Sunday from a treatable diabetic condition.

"We certainly believe that even though they firmly believed in their faith that they have a responsibility to provide medical attention for their daughter," Everest Metro Police Chief Dan Vergin told FOX News.

An autopsy concluded that Madeline Neumann of Weston, Wis., died Sunday from diabetic ketoacidosis, an ailment that left her with too little insulin in her body. Investigators said she probably had been ill for about 30 days, suffering from symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness.

"I believe that they did know she was ill, especially in the last week or so," Vergin said. "We know that the mother had communicated with her sister-in-law and others, and so certainly they had known she was ill and getting worse each day as this disease progressed."

Leilani Neumann, Madeline's mother, told the Associated Press that she never expected her daughter to die.

"We just noticed a tiredness within the past two weeks," Neumann said. "And then just the day before and that day [she died], it suddenly just went to a more serious situation. We stayed fast in prayer then. We believed that she would recover. We saw signs that to us, it looked like she was recovering."

They will most likely be returned to the home.

It will be up to the district attorney to decide whether or not to file charges against Madeline's parents, Vergin said.

"The parents certainly didn't want their daughter to die, they didn't want her to be ill," Vergin said. "They just chose a course of action that allowed her to regress into coma and then death."

Hey...I thought we were making fun of organized religion. Why bring Jesus into this? He has a message and it has nothing to do with fish shaped stickers, withholding medical care from children, or any sort of man made dogma.

Persoanlly I am not down with imposing my faith, but I will expose it when asked. I am not offened when folks make fun of the real Jesus, I just hope they are aware that there is a difference between what He said about himself and what lies have been made about Him.

I don't blame anybody for being mad at "religion". It does suck. But everybody owes it to themselves to see why such a historical figure like Jesus...or as I say Yeshua...has had such an impact on the world...both good and bad. It's too important to let religion ruin the chance for someone to find what just might be real and true.

Yes, I actually live on this planet. No, I don't walk around with my eyes and ears shut off from the rest of the world.

And big deal. Who couldn't find "way-out" examples of every group of humans......whether it be environmentalists, "heaven's gate" weirdos waiting for the "mother ship" to arrive, nazis,.......just look on the internet and you'll find thousands of groups of people who are into all kinds of flipped-out stuff. Do you condemn all military personnel because one of your fellow troops raped a 14-year old? C'mon, do you actually live on this planet?

But you feel the need to go after those who are trying to follow Jesus' message of love towards each other, and find the group that is kind of "out there" to condemn the whole of religion.

I still don't know why the hell Jesus is so famous. A middle aged Jewish MAN that was banging the hell out of ole Mary Magdalene and got her pregnant. Who cares?

I'm not religious at all and I don't believe that Jesus, or God for that matter, ever existed. Well, Jesus could have been a real person, but I don't think he was the son of god, maybe just a smooth talker:D. Anyways, I also know that religion has done, and caused, a whole lot of bad in the past, present, and most defiantly in the future. However, it's hard to ignore the fact that it has done some good. I'm all for the basic teachings of loving yourself and others and treating each other as equals. I also agree that religion can do a lot of good for certain people.

So while I don't believe in it, I respect people's right to believe in something supernatural like religion. Sorry, just felt like adding my two yen:D

Those are great questions Sex Wax! In my view I think every human being needs to ask these questions and I respect all who do. It's the folks that just dimiss the idea of a higher power altogether that trip me out. Personally that is one gamble I couldn't make...to mock and doubt the possibility of a creator god instead of seeking for the truth about one. But then again as I have heard it said before...people mock what they don't understand.

But not everyone who mocks religion is doing it becuase they don't understand. I've made pokes at religion before, but that's not because I don't understand it. I was raised a catholic and I've had relgion instilled upon me heavily for the first 15 years of my life. Once I was little, it was all good, never doubted it. But after a while I started to ask questions, questions that have no answers. I just have a hard time believing that there is some imaginary all powerful being out there watching over us.

Another thing that really turns me off about religion is some of the double standards you see. Such as accepting and loving your neighbor, as long as he is of the same belief system as you. If he's not, then damn him to hell and his whole pagen family! I know not all religious people are like that, but a vast majority of the one's I've met thoughout my life have been.

These are just some some random findings from various articles of "fiction" that I have come across. Not saying they are right or wrong. Just thoughts. Like the bible! Purely opinionated literature.

Human beings have never lacked for things to fight over, but for the last two millennia, they have fought the most over ideas involving the divine. Politics, technology, military capacity, and diseases have all played decisive roles in shaping history, yet it is impossible to understand the rise and fall of empires, the clash of civilizations, and the evolving balance of power without appreciating the unique fervor that religion inspires, and the speed with which new religions can spread.

Every new outburst of religious passion, while producing ecstasy and revelation for some, has disrupted established loyalties, fueled intolerance, and led to violence between the chosen and the damned.

I wish I could have this guy as a teacher. Once again, the brainwashing never ceases to amaze me.

A student and his family have filed a federal lawsuit demanding that a popular European history teacher at California's Capistrano Valley High School be fired for what they say were anti-Christian remarks he made in the classroom.

Chad Farnan, a 16-year-old sophomore, says the teacher, James Corbett, told his students that “Jesus glasses” obscure the truth and suggested that Christians are more likely than other people to commit rape and murder.

Farnan recorded his teacher telling students in class: “What country has the highest murder rate? The South! What part of the country has the highest rape rate? The South! What part of the country has the highest rate of church attendance? The South!” Farnan said he took the tape recorder to class to supplement his class notes.

“It was very hard for me because it’s like basically telling me all this stuff that I’ve believed my whole entire life — it’s just basically trying to throw it out the window,” Farnan told FOX News.

Farnan’s family has filed a federal lawsuit against the Capistrano Unified School District, claiming Corbett's remarks violated the First Amendment, which prohibits laws "respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." They are demanding that Corbett be fired.

Corbett’s attorney, Dan Spradlin, says his client has been teaching at Capistrano Valley High for 15 years and is in no way anti-Christian. According to Spradlin, Corbett was not trying to offend anyone but to inspire his students to think.

“The purpose is not to indoctrinate, but simply to provide a basic starting point to provoke discussion,” Spradlin said.

Farnan said he was insulted by Corbett's comments. When Farnan played the tapes for his mother, Teresa, she contacted Advocates for Faith and Freedom, a non-profit law firm that specializes in such cases, to seek redress.

The Farnans' complaint was dismissed by the school district, but they took their plight to federal court, where U.S. District Judge James Selna said he believed the case has merit and ordered it to go forward, probably before the end of the year.

The Farnans say that if the school agrees to put Corbett through sensitivity training and requires him to apologize to the students he offended, then the family would consider dropping their lawsuit. The school district has yet to comment on the offer

And I suppose this is ok too. You have got ot be f*cking kidding me. Lose religion and lose most of the problems we face in this world.

A report posted on Islam Watch, a site run by Muslims who oppose intolerant teachings and hatred for unbelievers, exposes a prominent Islamic cleric and lawyer who support extreme punishment for non-Muslims — including killing and rape.

A question-and-answer session with Imam Abdul Makin in an East London mosque asks why Allah would tell Muslims to kill and rape innocent non-Muslims, including their wives and daughters, according to Islam Watch.

"Because non-Muslims are never innocent, they are guilty of denying Allah and his prophet," the Imam says, according to the report. "If you don't believe me, here is the legal authority, the top Muslim lawyer of Britain."

The lawyer, Anjem Choudary, backs up the Imam's position, saying that all Muslims are innocent.

"You are innocent if you are a Muslim," Choudary tells the BBC. "Then you are innocent in the eyes of God. If you are not a Muslim, then you are guilty of not believing in God."

Choudary said he would not condemn a Muslim for any action.

"As a Muslim, I must support my Muslim brothers and sisters," Choudary said. "I must have hatred to everything that is not Muslim."

But here's the thing guys...all these things that the past posts have been about lean on your understanding about God BASED ON OTHER HUMAN BEINGS. And as we know humans are not perfect...we screw everything up.

That is why I don't try to "convert" anybody to the faith I have because I CAN NOT BE and will not be the example of the True God. Seeking out something as important as the creator of the universe has to be a personal attempt based on a personal desire to find out for oneself and to be determined to get to the bottom of it in spite of all the bullshit that other people have said and done in the name of God.

For instance...I don't know anybody in this forum personally but lets just say I do. If I were to come in here and say that GODH8SU is a total moron and he kills babies for kicks and on top of that he is one ugly mofo would you just believe it? Even if I gave you prove by showing you pictures of him taking money from the donation jar at WalMart it would wrong for anyone here to not dig deeper to try to find out the whole story and not just listen to the view that I want you to have. Now that's if my intention is to present a negative view of him.

What if I tried to convince you that GODH8su is the coolest guy and he is so damn good looking that women line up and pay him $100 an hour just to be with him. And because he is so rich he is going to take all of out to Cowdy's? If you all just believed me you would be out of your minds. The best way to get to know him is to access him directly without depending on anybody else to get to know him.

I honestly think it''s the same thing with God becasue that's how it happened to me. I grew up catholic and I too had questions and I didn't like any of the anwers people gave me. It has to be something supernatural and you either get it or you don't. But you cant win or lose if you don't run the race.

trust me silvia when I say I am not relying on my learned behaviors. but I will give you this that within all religions there are lots of people that do. And that sucks. That's why anything about my faith that I share with my child is more dependant on her asking the questions and wanting to genuinly know rather than me dictating to her what she better believe. but this isin't about me.

but yes if you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God is NOT THERE than that's all anyone can expect from you. I don't believe in relativism becasue Truth is not subjective but I also know that not everybody has faith. If on your deathbed you are satisfied with your belief system or lack of one concerning a creator than that's on you and who am I to try to change that? I just share with people that they might consider it a little more before they determine in their hearts that there is no God.
