Once I go and try to upload an avatar there isn't a way to un-check "do not use avatar". There also isn't an upload form to upload an image for your avatar either.

Hmm... I was able to upload my avatar. Go to User CP (at the top) > Edit Avatar > Click "Use Custom Avatar" and you shouldn't have a problem.

Do you not see "Use Custom Avatar" on your screen?

I've used this format of forum before and I'm not seeing "use custom avatar". There is only a selector for "do not use avatar", I don't see the "use custom avatar".
