View Full Version : Public Humiliation as a form of deterrence

How do you feel about using public humiliation as a form of deterrence?

I have said for a long time that the base papers (Shogun, OkiMar) should publish names, faces of people who do wrong. Not merely accused mind you, but when they are found guilty, put the information out there.

A CO in New York has begun doing the same with drunk drivers.

Fort Drum Prints Photos After Arrests for D.W.I. (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/08/nyregion/08dwi.html?hp)

“I didn’t take this step lightly,” General Oates said in an interview on the base on Friday, a day after the D.W.I. issue was published. “I’m aware that there are people who are not going to be happy with this, but I felt compelled to do something, because when you drink and drive you place everyone around you at risk.”

I think this is a great idea. I realize that many people won't feel the same though.

What are your thoughts?

I agree with it. If sex offenders have their names and pictures put out to the public (and I'm not defending them at all!) then why not the guy with 5 DUI's? or commits fraud? etc. etc.

How about someone who is a stellar performer, but stepped on his crank once and got a DUI? How do you feel about that one?

Me? I feel that all serious transgressions should be made pubic...no matter of a persons previous record.

Maybe on misdemeanor offenses give the person a pass but if it's a felony, then I would say nail 'em. But I get your point DoctorP

Well convictions are public record so what would be the problem with having them printed in the newpapers?

It should go both ways as well. Lets say someone ends up having their name slandered while awaiting trial and during trial and ends up being innocent. Then everyone that played a part in dragging that person's name through the mud should also be publicly humiliated.

That is why I said after they are found guilty...nothing should be said until then.

I'm just guessing that that there is a typo in there, but I agree with you.

Do something wrong, stand at the gate wearing a sign, confessing your crime. First time? No, depending on what it is. Second time, for sure. BTW, the guy that's wearing the sign all day is away from his duties. He needs to make up for the lost productivity, perhaps on weekend duty.

I'm talking of publishing his photo and name in the base paper for all to see...not taking him/her away from their duties.

Well, that's good too Doc, but post him at the gate for a few days, different shifts, wearing that sign, it's an attention grabber.

Then make him work off the hours missed.

How about wearing pink cammies/BDUs? Texas jail has had a good response to this punishment.

How about a sign on the weekends instead of the week day so he/she doesn't miss duty? Of course this can't be considered "corrective training" because that has to fall in line with the offense. It has to be an actual conviction like Doc said.

It may be off-topic a little bit, but here's what did when deploying into a combat environment. Most people are focused on their jobs, but you always have some problem kids, who think that they have deployed, and there is nothing more that you could do to them to make things worse.

During Desert Shield/Storm, once we landed and got set up, I started looking for help with that part of the problem. The Marines, as well as some Senior Army NCO's, helped me out quite a bit.

Somebody doesn't want to pull his load, and needs a rest? They have just the thing for that type of individual. "Cherry Bucket" detail. Usually only takes one day, and you get back a "Super Troop".:army:

Ever empty a "Porta-Potty" on a really hot day? lol

OUr CO in memphis use have all Marines that were NJP'd or the wone who didnt salute him posted on the busiest corner of the base in alphas all day with a sign around his/her neck with the crime. Trust me if you ever saw someone doing this it is a deterrence to fvcking up. Name ,photo, and a description of the dcrime is good, or bring back CCU

And while they are at it, they need to take cable out of the prisons along with A/C. Should teach them all how to knit or some crap like that. But back on topic.....public humiliation is an excellent deterent

I really think the brass at Ft. Drum are on to something here.

Awards ceremonies are public spectacles full of vacuous language. Why not reverse this trend with public humiliation full of harsh language for the offender?

LMAO, In a prison in NC they took the cable, personal radios, magazines ect out of the prison, the interior of the Jail was painted pink, and the only TV that were allowed were in the commons area, and only showed 24 Christian programming. Each cell was only allowed to have one book the bible, and the PA system played religious music 12hrs a day. Before they istarted these changes prisoners never volunteered for road details or farm duty. After they had a 2 yr waiting list. and alot less repeat visitors........no knitting classesLMAO, but the prisoners said it was the worst time they ever spent in a prison.

On another topic, when the F-15 was delivered to the inventory, a lot of pilots cut the safety wire, to engage V-Max. Jet Mech's will know what I'm talking about, but once that wire was cut, it meant a Phase Inspection, and engine changes.

You get tired of it after a while, so I approached the Wing King:

"If your Pilots cut the wire, then they should help change the engines, as well as helping with the inspection of the rest of the aircraft. And, they have to buy the maintainers a keg."

Sounded like a good idea at the time, and it only took two incidents, and the pilots stopped cutting the wire. Apparently they are smarter than the rest of us.

Or their "Boss", is a real "Bad Ass!!!".

Meant that in a good way.

NBTP.....Good point. Played Chef with a few of my less than "Ooh Rah" brothers during Shield/Storm. Dump the Deisel with the Mr. E mix dropped in 1/2 cut 55gal.drums strat. placed under a make to crapper, throw the match and stir. Back then I was a young E-4. My "hard love" corporal punishment. Cherry Bucket...excellent! Mine was you f***ed up. Lets make poop soup. Thankfully, all the lime I used to toss back on the farm destroyed most of my smell/taste. Rarely had a second offense.
